- The vast agricultural plains of the Agro-Pontino in central Italy is now one of the country's main areas of food production.
Yet it was not always the case.
This 100 mile-long stretch of land facing the Tyrrhenian Sea was marshland until a century ago when fascist dictator Benito Mussolini organised a mass migration from northern Italy to drain the swamps and turn them into fertile farmland.
But many of those who live today are not Italian, they are Indian - at least 11,000 of them, and possibly up to four times more.
Mostly Sikhs from Punjab in northern India, they are economic migrants who have come here to work in local farms and send money home to give their families a better life.
Some manage to do just that. But for many others, their dreams are crushed.
Instead, they face abuse and exploitation from both profit-driven agri-businesses and organised crime - labouring for pitiful wages, often without official documentation, and trapped in a system from which there is no escape.
Filmmakers Alessandro Righi and Emanuele Piano went to investigate for People & Power.

My wife's cousin returned from Italy without getting months of wages, later on he moved to Canada after running shop and driving taxi in India for few years. With the grace of God he is settled
In India you'd never hear Sikhs and poor in the same sentence. They are the most successful community and do so much for the poor. So proud of the Sikh community in India. Respect guys.

@opinions opinions their situation has nothing to do with the British colonization. In many aspects they were worse off before it. Actually, the British Empire allowed millions of Indians to resettle in most of its former colonies, which is a very positive thing. Migrations are part of human history, and yes, we live in a more interconnected world, making it easier to migrations to go farther.

I see that happening in the Arabic country I work in.. Especially the building industry.. Foreman takes his cut and then gives the peanuts to the true workers.. It's sad and disgusting.

(Considering situation in Bangladesh)Local "dealers" who send them and get them to the job, often sell them instead, make an unfair deal with the employer and bag a huge amount from the employer. Employer tries to get most out of workers as of the deal (which workers themselves are unaware of)..

I have been through these kind of conditions in Canada. I and my wife worked for a farmer . We were never paid for one full year of work. Farmer declared bankruptcy. I supported our self with my second job. I use to work 16 to 24 hours.
I am thankful to God. I went on to establish multimillion furniture manufacturing. My mentality I regret also became to take advantage.
In my mind I bow at the feet of everyone. But I did not exploit them without all of them actually making more money had I done by the book.
As they would not have earned so much more nor I would have been able to sell furniture for less.
Today everyone my ex workers are multi millionaire them self.
They made union I was not able to pay the overtime. Thus had to cutback to regular hours. The earnings went down. Prices went up.
Became uncompetitive. The company business was lost . Housing industry boom was able to pay 3 times furniture industry.
Only the best survived or those Indians who operated as I did with own family members . As they work while collecting government benefitat the same time.
These things have been with humans and will be always.
Out of which are born the best flowers to provide opportunity.
In my furniture company I worked 20 hours slept on the machines .My wife would bring my brake fast to the factory as I had been working all night.
Did not go home for 6 months. But my mother use to tell .God gave us bodies to work . Use it God will reward. God did reward money.
But I lost my family life.
Today I feel I claimed the mountain. But from the wrong side and wrong top.
But I am still happy as ultimately we die anyway. Humans never stop complaining.
I see most of my employees are happy and wealthy. May be cursing me.
The missing link is they got the opportunity from that place. I tolled besides them.

Yup conditions are poor but most people choose these conditions to get the residency.
Some People in BC work in poor conditions because they are not eligible to work under certain visas, so they work illegally and other fews works on cash to avoid tax. A leagl working person is entitled to get favourable conditions to work and law make it sure for them.
Restaurants also exploit workers and charge them heavily for LMIA, but at the end its the matter of choice.
Exploitation is a curse but you cant justify it with your choices.
I thought the worst labour system is with middle east countries. After this video i realized that, the so called europeans are the worst employees in the world.

Yes, by exploiting their own countrymen to death. How is that something to be proud of. As an Indian expat, watching this video made me profoundly sad for the plight of helpless, hardworking migrant workers. Irrespective of Al Jazeera’s hypocrisy in investigating Italy’s exploitation of migrant labour but staying mum on the ever harsher and brutal exploitation in the Middle East, what they showed in the documentary is so close to the truth. As an Indian I can read in between the lines and can vouch for the accuracy of what they have shown.
The injustice is happening at so many levels. Here is a father who is doing back breaking work and hasn’t seen his family for 10 years and on the other hand we have feckless men (in developed countries) who couldn’t be bothered to even see the children they have spawned, because the taxpayer pays to raise the children through govt. benefits. Food is cheap and it always bothered me and I wondered if we pay the actual cost of production, given the time, effort and resources it takes to grow things. The answer is obviously not, as we can see the only way to keep prices so low is through slave labour and exploitation. To see the amount of food getting thrown away at home and at supermarkets, given this background, makes me angry and nauseated. All that blood, sweat and toil for nothing.
Going Italy is just a trend in India Punjab. but reality is different that is why most of sikh workers are being exploited there. This video must aware newcomers
Sometimes migrant workers keep the real conditions secret and tell only the positive side of their work. So the people in the home country think those workers are in good hands.
Theres no shame in saying that most of these migrants know what kind of life they gonna get before going in there, but they still choose that just because of getting settled down in some other country otherwise they will be left behind in the society they live in. Its a big irony to say the least, land owners in the country are cultivating lands as a slave somewhere else.

great documentary. please make such contents. I did my higher studies from Punjab and most of my classmates didn't study hard but went to Italy and Canada. once I spoke to a friend who came for a winter vacation after a few years and he told me that he works for a farm doing grapefruit farming. Most of those guys came back disappointed but never spoke about their experiences there. now I know why. 😔 these r really most innocent and a wonderful hearted rural people from India.

There are innumerable visa agents sitting in Punjab who provide fake work visas to people who have dreams to pursue abroad who swayed because of lack of information . Sadly,all this network has been meticulously laid down with the blessings of local politicians and state government

First: they already did many investigations on that, whether in English or Arabic, and whether they uploaded them to UA-cam or not.
Second: Al Jazeera is an International News Channel, not a Qatari News Channel.
Third: most foreign workers do not live in poor living conditions, and the others who do actually choose to do so, they're just used to live like that in their home countries and they do not want to spend so much money trying to live better when they're only coming to work for several years then return to their home country where they can live better for the rest of their lives because no country in the world pays them as much as Qatar and other Gulf countries do, and that's why millions of them keep going, no one, however, forces them to live like that, that's their choice.

Yes, Canada has many Sikhs in high ranking governmnent positions even.
However, in Canada, many Sikhs are taken advantage of by rich Hindus who sponsor their immigration and lie to them, which forces them to work underskilled jobs.

As for their houses, check this - You MUST NOT KNOW that the Sikh people traditionally do not send their kids away when they finish school or get a different house for them and their wife when they marry like Westerners. They TAKE CARE of their family/parents etc, keeping them all TOGETHER. What you are looking at is actually more like a condo complex, with MANY SEPERATE RESIDENCES within. But WHY should it LOOK like a complex when it is actually all one amalgamated FAMILY residence? So Y'all don't die of ENVY from your wicked imaginations?
They didn't "let them in" - they QUALIFIED. There are many highly educated Sikhs, though you would like to believe they got their credentials from a cereal box. Many nations benefit from the Top-Notch medical/scientific knowledge and experience produced in India.

Same thing happening here in Murcia, Spain for décades. You can find a 'Gang Máster' under every rock there. People have to take opiumnoid drugs to keep up with the inhumane labour as the cronical back pain is toó strong to stay sober. And thus after few years they turn to much stronger drugs.

It's really hard to make a good living in India not only because of unemployment, low wages but because of judgement so many Indians go abroad to seek Better life away from judgement. I respect and love SIKH community , they are very helpful and jolly people.
These Indians now are labours but after decades will become the most richest... History repeats itself. We have seen it south Africa UK and the US.
South America, Mauritius, Fiji, Etc.

Hey same here in Poland first they pay on hours wedges and after 2 days they pay on bundles of plant you finish. Many of the Indian migrant workers are working in tomato picking green houses. And yes I was one of them but as soon as I realized I just left that place.
There are many reasons: unethical capitalistic practices, cheap unskilled labor due to globalisation, lack of opportunities due to overpopulation and many more... Many initiatives are being taken to rectify these mistakes back home. Also, hope this is not propoganda to sympathize with Khalistanis!

Low paid and low skilled labors work in many countries, not just Italy, Australia, the Gulf countries, the East Asian countries, etc. It's supply and demand thing

Why would government step up? They want talented people to leave so they have power for a longer duration. Plus they also want remittances. And then these governments can even boast of how an Indian origin made a name in another country. Add to that, that it relieves the government of the need to create jobs or think about making life better for rest of the Indians. As long as other countries are watchign that some Indians are doing good (foreign based) rest of us dont matter. We are invisible and we remain vote bank/publicity tool/ intellectual theft material. They use & throw. Thats the trurth. I dont lie.
@Joli It is the same story for skill or unskilled. Only manual laborers are prized in India for their manual labor for rich to live glorious lives by putting manual laborers always in a circle of poverty. You take away power from some to give power to some others, for vote bank & power. It is a game. The same road in India is built every 3 months, to give few rupees to manual laborers and lakhs of contracts to wealthier ones for influence.
They purposefully make those roads with cheaper materials so it breaks in 3 months to generate wealth. It is the level of creativity or hustle that happens in India. We the common people suffer in indirect ways due to these inefficiencies and oversmartness of Indian governmental entities.

There were Hindus there as well and the religious ceremony was Hindu. Also the title is insulting to REAL slaves making a mockery of it. Surname Singh does not mean your Sikh. Its a surname used by multiple communities in India. Also they are just saving up for the next leg off their Journey to the U.K. I have Italian friends and the economy is poor compared to the UK. Also it is a more tolerant and fair country in the UK. I say good luck to them. Hardworking guys.

I think human rights councils and labour department in Italy should play right role to protect the rights of these immigrants. In India if they work they will ear 10000-15000 ruppes a months and can save aroung 5000 from it and in Italy they are sending 100000 rs a months and saved around 80000

There are always 2 sides of a coin
Most of these labourers (not all) are land owners in Punjab, but unfortunately theres a herd mentality to go to foreign land to settle down. Its a choice more than an option.
Universities in Punjab are short of students because people send their kids to western countries to study and later settle down there, most of them sell their land to bear the expenses, and others take big loans.
Young lads do not want to work in Punjab or India just because they want to head west by hook or crock. 99% migration is labour migration, skill migration is non existent.
Materialism is very high in Punjab, moral values are going down. Just Listen to punjabi music you can easily figure out which way Punjabi community is heading. We see others making some progress in foreign land and thinks that it would be piece of cake to make same progress for ourselves.
Poverty is there no doubt but herd mentality plays a important role here.
Migration is more of psychological thing now then physical. Your success in the society is now determined by size of luxurious lifestyle you are living in other countries in west, no mqtter how indebted you become to have auch a life.
Punjabis are tough people, culture is great but following the crowd going in a wrong direction is always end up in some kind of destruction.

Al Jazeera is a good news portal, but here they have not shown due diligence in reporting the ground realities. Sikhs could not be slaves but may be exploited on low wages to begin with, but they are very assertive in their temperament. They are entrepreneurs who take pride in ownership. I am told of success stories of Sikh-Italians owning Dairies & cheese processing plants. They have number of Gurdwaras(temples) funding from their own sources. They are friendly and can be trusted in partnerships of hardwork. It is good to report but make a reassessment of more facts! Good luck 🍀👍
Thank you. It is good to hear, they are not slaves. Low wage is a problem in India too, infact every where else too. But calling a working population that is living in one of the most advanced nations of the world, came out as shock. If they are truly slaves, then Citizenship Amendment Act should bring them back, immediately.

saaz frenvis companies in the west higher trained professionals abroad telling them the high fixed wage they will receive but when they come they are paid less and cheated very badly. Microsoft , google, Apple, etc do this to their indian tech employers
@@DemonicEmbrace lol that is an absolute lie the people who go for higher education in west usually end up getting higher paying jobs if they're skilled. one of my friends in Germany went for a master's and now he is a software developer who is making around 98000 euros a year. Ofcourse if you're neither skilled and nor educated about your rights people will exploit you everywhere regardless of any nations it's just human nature.
