You should see my Cordyline (not too far from you, I’m near the TC and Barton). It was planted 6 years ago roughly 4’ tall, it’s now at roof height of our house. It produced two off shoots that we planted around two years ago now and these are roughly 2’ tall already. No idea how they’ve grown so well but after a garden makeover last year we have decided to now make it have that tropical feel by adding a variety of plants, Palms, Banana’s etc 👍🏼 we’ve added a small movable bar area on one side and our hot tub on the other.
I'm like yourself always noting exotics in different locations. There are a lot of advantages to cordylines, fast growing, hardy, cheap, instant exotic vibe, always available to purchase, different colours etc. There are always new varieties being sold. 'Albatross' is on my shopping list.
I agree! I’ve not come across albatross before, would be interested to find out if the leaves stay as glossy as it matures and if it’s as hardy as the sellers say it is!
I wonder how far North Canary Island Date Palms can be grown. I know there are some large specimens in London and on the South coast but can't recall seeing and up North.
Hi Sean, you see quite a few small ones up north but they haven’t really been tested that much by winter cold. There’s a decent sized one in Blackburn which I’ve videoed a couple of times and another in Scarborough. The former is touching a house and the latter right on the seafront so they need very careful placement to stand a chance long term up north
There is a decent sized one in Scarborough on the sea front in the hillside garden that must have been there before 2010. There are some planted around Sunderland but all planted after 2010. The closer to the coast they are, the better chance they have.
I thought i was the only one that took note of palm trees when i drive around! Good for inspiration
I’m glad you said that as I thought it might just be me! At least there’s two of us!
There’s 3 of us 😂

Sounds great, Steve! Yeah they grow fast when happy so you’re obviously looking after it we’ll!
Good to see proof of what's possible in our climate
Excellent share thank you 😊
You’re welcome, thanks for the comment!
Just planted 2 cordylines and 1 trachy in my front garden.
Nice one, Bob. I try to go for hardy plants like those for the front garden too

I live in Bolton 👋
Ah, that must be what the “wonderland” part of your name must be! Do you recognise anywhere? I’ve missed loads as I only had a quick walk around!
are cordylines gaining in popularity?
Yes, they’ve been very cheap to buy in the UK for many years now and I think that people often copy what their neighbours have planted!
doesn't it snow in Bolton
Yes it snows most years
@@palmsexoticsuk2194 interesting how palms can grow there
Pheonix canariensis pretty tough up on north east coast.... cordylines ain't that tough especially when small
Interesting! Cordylines are fine here most years even when small but I have great difficulty with Phoenix Canariensis even in a ‘mild’ winter
