  • I'll show you how to make extra keys for your 2016 2017 2018 2019 Chevrolet Volt. Easy job to do at your own home. Avoid dealerships and save money! This also works for the Chevy Cruze and Bolt too! You will need EVERY key fob you want to use for this as it erases all other keys.
    1. 0:00 Buy extra keys online. 2017-2019 Cruze and Volt will use "HYQ4EA" 433MHZ keys. The "HYQ4AA" is 315MHZ for older cars. Make sure the buttons match your own and check your frequency/model by opening your key fob and it will be printed on the inside by the battery.
You can buy the correct keys here:
    - amzn.to/3PGAWwN
    2. 0:30 optional have the backup door key cut on the extra keys. Not needed if you have one good working backup door key, but it's a good idea anyways. Check out my video here where I show you how to set up a new Defu 368A key cutting machine that I use. • Laser cutting our own ...
    3. 2:05 Use the backup door key to remove the lock cover on the driver's door. Push up from the bottom hole while pulling out on the handle and it will pop out.
    4. 2:45 Turn the backup door key in the lock cylinder to the left 5x quickly.
    5. Follow the on screen instructions in the dash. It will say "Remote Learn Pending Please Wait".
    6. After 10 minutes the instrument cluster will say "Press Engine Start Button to Learn". Press the power button once. It will say "Remote Learn Pending Please Wait".
    7. Again - After 10 minutes the instrument cluster will say "Press Engine Start Button to Learn". Press the power button once. It will say "Remote Learn Pending Please Wait".
    8. 3:33 After another 10 minutes the cluster will now say "Press Engine Start Button to Learn". Have your keys ready nearby. Press the start button. It will now say "Ready for Remote 1".
    9. Place the first key in the center console. There will be a spot there in the shape of the key fob after removing the mat. When the key is in that spot press the power button. The screen will change to "Ready for Remote 2". Remove remote 1 and press the lock button and then the unlock button to sync the remote.
    10. Place the next key in the center console and press the power button. The screen will change to "Ready for Remote 3". Press the lock and then unlock button on remote 2 to sync the remote.
    11. 4:30 Continue with above until all remotes are programmed.
    12. 5:00 When done programming remotes, press the power button down and hold it for 12 seconds to exit programming mode. I went a few seconds longer to be sure.
    13. Reinstall the lock cylinder cover you removed earlier.
    14. Have some refreshments! You just saved yourself a ton of money over the dealerships!

DUDE thank you!!! Saw another video that didn’t work for me (I only had 1 fob) and bought 2 more oem refurbished ones for $53 each on eBay and $110 and this video later and I have 3 functional fobs now! 👍🏼
For anyone doing this and having an issue, you HAVE to wait the 10 minutes (x2) to do it. I put a timer on my phone and did the door open and door close to light up the screen again after 10 minutes to have the proper message show up

This video worked for my 2017 Volt. Be patient and follow the directions. Only thing is my old remote doesn’t work now. Dont want to go through it all again so maybe someday I will reprogram it. Tried other videos but this one worked.

Glad it helped you. It erases all keys going through this method. You can't only add, you have to do them all at once.

According to instructions I have seen while looking it up for my mother's Bolt EV, the 30-40min wait procedure is for when you are down to one/no working keys. If you have TWO working keys, you can open the door, put them in the tray, close the door, do the 5x quarter-turn part to put the car into programming mode and skip straight to programming extra keys. You may want to give that a shot, shouldn't take much more than a minute to see whether that actually works... unless you already did so based on "those other videos."

So helpful. Bit nerve wracking but everything worked out. I had to press the button 3+ times on the second key before it registered, in case any one else runs into a similar issue

Hello, I want to order Cadillac key fob for 2013 volt. As I concluded, the crucial part is for both car and key to have same 315hz frequency right? And same number of buttons as og car key fob. Thank you for such a good guide.

my screen turned off and the door open/close thing didn't work, the "plug in charger" message would come up and then black.
I just waited the 10 min and then pressed the power button once and the message would appear again. scary as heck, but it worked lol thank you!

Many thanks for the tutorial. It was helpful. Please note and add in your film: you do not have to remove the whole plastic cap from the door handle. Actually, it is possible to slide the matt element on top of the lock cap to the left (front of the car) WITH THE HANDLE ITSELF PULLED TOWARDS YOU for ease of movement. Check it out! I accidentally discovered the cap consists of TWO elements: it is much easier to slide the top part as described above. Also, it seems you have to program at least two keyfobs as programming only one leads to the theft lock message appearing on starting the car. Best wishes! A little erratum: you need to pry the top of the cap from the left upwards. I was really fighting with the cap to make it come off. Hence it seemed the top cover slid to the left. If you just pry the matt part up from the left side the lock will be revealed without taking off the whole cap :)

Yeah, I should have recorded with a tripod. Pulling the handle out first is almost required, and definitely makes it easier.

Hi! Great and comprehensive video that I was looking for.
Can you give your source for keyfob? I bought 5 button HYQ4EA on Ali and went through procedure with strange results: keyfob is detected (I do not receive "no remote key fob found" messe anymore) but radio buttons doesn't work and engine doesn't start.
I need also add that it was no ALL key scenario and I've purchased only 1 so far (this 5 button version)
    Any idea what's wrong?

I bought my keys from eBay. You may need two good keys or a key programmer/dealership visit. I've read Canada's Volt model prevents making new keys yourself. USA models are ok.

We already have one FOB that works but need an extra FOB for our 2017 Chevrolet Volt. Do we need to have the new FOB key cut or can we just program it without going to a locksmith and having it cut?

Were the remotes you bought were brand new OEM Chevy remotes? I tried with a used Chevy remote and new aftermarket remotes and none worked. I'm considering spending the $95 for a brand new OEM Chevy remote but I'm just worried it won't work. If you could please let me know it would be much appreciated and could save me from a visit to the locksmith for a $295 key 😭

Lost one of my two keys and tried using an older volt key I had laying around on my 2019 volt to replace the lost one. Got the first key to work during the reset process but the second key would never get discovered by the car. It would stay on searching for second key or whatever that message was. When I used the key that I got working (the one I didn’t lose) it would only start some of the time. Sent the car to the dealer along with my old key and they tried to do the same process (Quoted $250ish for this). Got a call later saying they could get the first key to work but not the second. They told me I would need to buy a new key so I paid them to finish the process. Total was around $500.
    Two things I learned:
    1. Old volt keys will not work on your newer volt car.
    2. Using only one key and trying to end the process while searching for the second key/without connecting a second key may cause the car to start in Anti Theft mode.
At the least, buy a new key off eBay and try using that if whatever you are currently trying is not working. Worst case just return it. Hope this helps.

GM changed frequencies on their keys. You have to open your fob to check what frequency you have before ordering or using one.

  • @MattB787

I'm really glad that GM allows the car's owner to program another key, as opposed to, say Toyota or Ford, that charges $100+ just for the key, then another $100+ to program it

      @HeartlandRebuilds  5 місяців тому

Ford will allow you to program a third key, but you already must have two working keys.
