Haha, I said that on another WKRP video , here on UA-cam. The guy was the epitome of late 70's cool/handsome - I bet Gary Sandy had women literally throwing themselves at him during WKRP's height of success. What a great show, great time to be alive.

Great interview! It's always fun to learn a little something from an insider on one of my favorite shows. The character Andy was like the eye of the storm, with everyone else so extreme and out there, and Mr. Sandy did a really good job of being the "sane guy" in a way which heightened the comedy. His observations about Ms. Smithers line up with the times I remember doing a doubletake when they'd light and film Bailey a certain way. She was straight-up gorgeous, the perfect Mary-Ann to Jennifer's Ginger. RIP, Mr. Hesseman!

They didn't ALWAYS hide Jan Smithers, certainly the audience was quite well aware, although its funny to hear a fellow actor say "stacked". At the interview Loni said they wrote the two women well together but a LITTLE friction would have been interesting between them. Although you can look at it from two sides, but as Bailey started dressing up and up, Jennifer Marlowe started doing the same, so maybe there was an undercurrent there.
She lived around Halifax Nova Scotia for awhile and lived as an artist, then travelled to a lot of the world building homes for the poor. I think she had some mental health problems but then acting is a crazy profession, you have to be a little out there to begin with. But it was nice to see her at the Shout Factory panel discussion which is available on UA-cam, she even gets a few sentences in. They usually say women don't age as well as men but in the case of WKRP the ladies fared better than most of the guys. Never did hear from Bucky Dornster again though. They got rid of the union man quick.....hmm.

WKRP was a funny show and it's a god damn shame it didn't' last at least another 3 seasons!! It deserved to but CBS screwed around with the time slot so much. The first 2 seasons it was on Mondays at 9:30 right after MASH where it was getting good ratings. Then for the last 2 seasons they moved it around to all different nights and times then cancelled it because of low ratings; well OF COURSE it got low ratings-viewers couldn't find it a lot of times. And back then the only way to know when a show was on was to look in the newspaper.

@@isaiahmarker407 happened with almost every series as producers did what they wanted to do and networks just lit the lights, sold and took tickets.
      Edward R Murrow
      Rod Serling
      Gene Roddenberry
      Norman Lear
      Glenn Gordon Caron
      Sidney Sheldon
      Sherwood Swartz
Marlo Thomas (not counting the arguments with her Dad and Desilu)
      MASH....
All, and many more, had network arguments, debates and pressures. It finally comes down to, is this thing profitable enough to accept the insubordinate static.....like any employment.

He made a deal with Mama - if he was able to keep the union out , she'd put more money into the station.
If that's the one you're referring to.

Didn't hide the fact of Jan Smithers being a beautiful woman from me. Oh man guys went crazy over Loni and rightfully so but being a young man I locked onto Jan's eyes. I think she is the woman that finally broke the spell I was under from Linda Ronstadt. Yep I wasn't big on blondes. Anyway the whole cast was funny especially so "The Big Guy" Dr. Fever was cool and Tim Reid was brilliant in the show. Why'd they need Andy for eh ? Guess one of em had to be sane but Jan was sane..can't leave out Les Nessman "something is being dropped from the helicopter" and Frank Bonner selling airtime to an electronics store owner..Jan give me a call any damn time you want to gorgeous.

He didn't leave. The show was cancelled. He and Jan Smithers had already left Hollywood when the 90's reboot was being cast and both declined cameos.
