Yes! My favorite youtube channel!!
Not related to this video exactly but I just wanted to say how much I appreciate that you link to the ambient background music in your videos. I watch way too many UA-cam channels that don't do that.
This men came along at the right time. It took the 1970s to present this truly alien enigma in the form of the ship and the creature that came from it.
Allen was the peak of ultimate film making.
the fact that your video essays are so complex and done well makes me want to see you succeed in a video game video essay.
Before Alien, Giger worked on Alejandro Jodorowsky's pre-production of Dune. The film was never made. This project is important because Giger would work with O'Bannon, Foss, and Giraud here first before doing Alien with them. If you want to know more, go see the 2014 Documentary film "Jodorowsky's Dune"
Oh man, I wish you'd gone into the specific fears that the xenomorph dips into. I recently watched Children of the Corn and then looked up the background influences of the Alien movie.. CotC was awful by comparison. Useless, helpless "heroine," patronizing protagonist who saves the day while the women and children watch on, etc. etc. This came out in 1984.
And then there's Alien. Badass, no-nonsense woman protagonist, an alien creature that prays on and inverts our primal fears of being "penetrated" and impregnated parasitically, the cold void of space... in 1979. Then I understood why this movie was so loved and vastly influential. It used and flipped so many tropes, tapped into such deep fears, and did it all so well.. Thanks for doing this video, this movie and creature design deserve it!
Always excited for your videos
No matter what I'm doing, if I see a new video of yours posted, I watch it right then.
Giger also designed and built the 'Space Jockey' in the derelict ship. Unfortunately, Scott messed with its design (cleaning it up, as he called it) for Prometheus, turning it into something less interesting.
You deserve WAY more suscribers
the quality of these videos are better than 99% of everything on the Internet
I'm surprised you already have another video out! You usually take about a month from what I see. I'm glad it looks as good as ever. Keep it up! And I think Jake from Vsauce 3 shared one of your vids in his Community tab.
I💗this special story Alien-H.R.Giger it is amazing fascinating piece article of his masterpiece work and yes I saw movie Alien👽and I💗it is very suspenseful, scariest story H.R.Giger is very gifted brilliant.
Alien is a fantastic movie - it's fantastical and it's incredibly compelling! I completely agree with you noting its elegance.
It's mind blowing to me that not only is there someone out there that loves damn near everything you do, but takes it as seriously as you do
Xenomorphs had a close second with the Yautja. The creature design was superb and so too was the secondary design of the culture on top of the creature's biology. The tribalistic nature came through while still being alien. You could even see it in Kevin Hall's wonderful performance; the style of moment was fully integrated into the seemless design. We didn't need a single word of exposition to know the nature of the alien in Predator.
I lived in Switzerland, one day we went to a castle and his museum was there, we were going to get in, but it was a very inviting place with really creepy naked aliens so we didn’t. Only then I realised what it was about.
Great work!
Another great video as always :)
So good.
Could you possibly look into doing one specifically on cinematography and their influence on cinema?
There are particular films where certain shots alone can invoke an emotional response or tell an entire story (without narratives) and I've yet to find anyone truly touch on this. Perhaps even compare it to most blockbusters these days.
DO A VIDEO ON DEATH GRIPS
A REAL ARTIST BESIDES GENIUS
the man had beautiful hair
Can you do Avatar the Last Airbender next please?
He was a genius.
I want more alien games
If I'm not mistaken, the initials stand for Hans Ruedi, not "Hans Rudolf"..
Unless that's an abbreviation? I've not heard it before..
you are extremely talented and if you are looking for another show idea i think you should do a longer but less visually edited
Favorite creature of allll time.
To HRG... We commit this man to your keeping oh Lord. His body has been taken from the shadow of our night. He has been released from all darkness and pain. The man has gone beyond our word. He is eternal and everlasting. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Why. Why are the innocent punished? Why the sacrifice. Why the pain. There aren’t any promises. Nothings certain. Only that some get cold. Some get safe. He wont ever know the hardships and grief for those of us left behind. We commit his body to the void, with a glad heart. For within each seed there is a promise of a flower. And within each death no matter how soon there is always a new life . A new beginning. Amen
Rainbow thumbnails, nice touch.
It's tubes, it's a series of tubes
I would really like to find that song in the end credits, if anyone can link it that would be great!
This channel is amazing
Man this channel is 100% quality and I love it.
ikr
I am getting the feeling it is so good it is bad.
+seth chizmar how could you?
It's like the poor man's Nerdwriter1. I love it.
haha it has the same flow to it :-)
When H. R. Giger stared into the abyss, the abyss stared back.
Then, Giger started rubbing himself through his pants until the abyss became uncomfortable and looked away.
pure Poetry ;)
Brilliant ❤❤
Can confirm, I was in the courtroom that day when the Abyss, via videolink, described what H.R. had subjected it to...
The acidic tears did cause some problems initially but after a glass bowl was installed the court was reconvened.
Bravo Comment Nick
😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 I'm dying
Correction: Dan didn't contact Giger because of the book "Necromicon" but rather through the contacts of Alejandro Jodorowsky, the director of El Topo. Both Dan and Giger were working on a cancelled Dune adaptation that had Jodorowsky conducting, and through that production the two became closer friends.
'Jodorowsky's Dune' is one of the sources for this info. Everyone should check it out if you want more Giger, highly recommend it.
Brutananadilewski you're killing me haha! I just really like your profile pic lol
+
Specifically, Giger was designing everything related to the Harkonnens IIRC.
Potidaon
Yeah; Moebius (known for Incal, Silver Surfer: Parable, Panzer Dragoon) was doing Character designs, Chris Foss (whom worked for both Alien and Guardians of the Galaxy) did the ship designs and Dan was working as a SFX consultant after Jodorowsky was pissed at how his original choice for this role (the SFX provider of 2001 A Space Odyssey) felt "too capitalist" for him
It makes me so happy that you use Home for your video's music. Awesome stuff. Also great vid!
When is your next video, Saberspark?

no no noooooooooooooooooooooooooo
The xenomorph itself may work in full light but similar to the shark from Jaws, Ridley Scott felt that they could never shake off the "man in a rubber suit" issue that hurt many horror films prior due to the limits of technology at the time. That's why they always had the Alien cast in shadow and barely gave the audience a clear full view shot of it. Working around this limitation payed off handsomely as it made for an engaging experience that allowed for the audience's own curiosity and fears to fill in the blanks.
Today's filmmakers should also be aware of the limitations of technology, instead of thinking that CGI is a magical tool that can do anything.
+mourizze
Actually he has a video about that xD
ah yes, the amazing Jurassic Park analysis video.
jay kj but yet, to this day, it out does anything that followed.
every horror you see in bright light almost imediately loses some of it's scaryness. i think that's the reason most of modern horrorfilms doesn't work anymore. they tend to show way to much.
The quality of the work shows in each video. Keep it up Kaptainkristian.
And it comes in pretty regular intervals too.
I see what you did there.
I love how you mention that the Xenomorph's intentions and evolution is explained through actions and experiences and not dialogue. Unfortunately we ended up getting Prometheus and Alien: Covenant the do the exact opposite of what made the Alien films great
Every time those 2 movies are mentioned,
as a big ol _ALIEN & ALIENS_ fan, I am glad
I have not wasted my time... Right?
@@favoritemustard3542 worth seeing. They cancelled the Neil Blomkamp w Weaver in which they retcon 3 and newt/hicks didn't die off screen. I am still so so so mad they did that. What an absolute travesty to have made the films they did instead
Totally agree. They are really just there to answer a butt load of questions with some fun visuals. It would have been nice if we could have had less shown and explained and more creative story telling techniques. I still enjoyed them greatly
@@naeemtohidi3223 But they created a lot more questions and intrigue about the Engineers and David and the black goo. There's a lot more to see in the future, hope Ridley Scott makes another film before he grows too old for film
The 'Space Jockey' that Giger designed for the film Alien was completely ruined via the explanation given in Prometheus. Somethings are best left unknown.
So basically somethings are better done in a Lovecraftian sense.
What do you mean by 'Lovecraftian sense'?
Same with the design of the ship. They went from Giger's very organic and alien looking interior, to generic metal-based design. It makes me wonder if Ridley Scott had any respect at all for Giger.
Commander Panda Wow! damn good question... something is definitely strange there. I can understand him going back in an attempt to avoid connecting his new work to anything after ALIEN, but that was redicules.
pillsareyummy Lovecraft was a writter that wrote Call of Cthulu the famous monster. I think that "lovecraftian sense" is having dark mystery of your characters unexplored thus making them outworldly or godly. Like a force of nature and not just an animal.
Next should be "The Amazing Bulk - Making A Masterpiece"
The chase scene alone
DEFxRECON You know it.
"Jack and Jill - The Art Of Comedy"
funny enough, the next video's gonna have a purple thumbnail. you clever man, you
DAMN THOSE DUST BUNNIES
Every video you release instantly makes me happy.
I cannot agree more.
I just get a big smile on my face every time I see him. Maybe you should consider supporting him on patreon if you like it so much ;)
I am supporting him on Patreon now!
When I was five years old, someone in my family took me along with several cousins to see Alien at the drive in theatre.
Over twenty years of nightmares later, I finally came to terms with the thing and tend to think of it as an old friend now.
I had no idea I needed this channel in my life
Oh, it is this guy
Studio Ghibli, now
No
If you make demands of the great then you will always be disappointed.
yes
I know you usually only do episodes on things that have had a huge impact on there mediums and i have a suggestion on a manga series thats usually forgotten but has resurfaced recently Berserk.
If you haven't read it before or know what it is. It's a manga released in 1988 and its still going on about a guy named guts and his struggle. I would really love and appreciate your opinion on it.
mangasee.co/manga/series=Berserk&chapter=1&index=1&page=1
I think Studio Ghibli doesn't need any more people to tell us how great it is. Too easy, really.
cowboy bebop is next. I can feel it
Please do Cowboy Bebop! That would make me so happy.
How about Neon Genesis Evangelion (or any of the other classic animes could do)
MGS
Ghibli would be cool - similar to his Pixar video
That ending has never left me, and the music alone created a whole new aspect to a series I've never seen before. That anime was a fucking masterpiece- something KKristian wouldn't allow himself to pass up.
He should make one on akira
i second this
CANADAAA TETSUOOOO
KANEEEEDDAAAAA
When will society recognize Satoshi Kon's work?
Mr Leprechaun My god you're everywhere
lol, in 5 minutes two big youtube channels upload a video about iconic monster movies. The other one is the film theorist, but this one is a lot better
I got that too, it was back to back.
Except that the production quality of one of these is on a whole other level.
Nice, both icons.
Robin Laurenssen not sure id day this channel is big... atleast not yet
ok here comes the "man, this channel needs more attention and has such good quality content!" comments
You cant oversell this guy
But... He really does. It's too good. I just wanna express it to the world!
I am starting to believe this is the finest UA-cam channel.
this and FilmTheory for me
+Rob Vel MatPat goes too far on his theories. I unsubbed from both Game and Film Theory. Honestly this and Wisecrack are as good as it gets.
Damion Dixon
I hear you with Wisecrack but Im sticking with Mat for now, puts out quality content even though if it has been waning recently.
Channel Criswell & Nerdwriter1 .
Add in Primitive Technology and we've got the holy trinity of UA-cam Channels
A new KaptainKristian video. Feels like christmas
I'm blasted high & drunk right now. This video still kept my attention.
And you'll get to watch it again tomorrow like it's the first time so double win
These videos are even better high lol
Rest in Peace Mr. Giger
This is why I'm one of those rare individuals who prefers Alien to Aliens. Aliens basically made the aliens just dangerous giant bugs. Alien gave the alien a mystique that made it what it was; perfect organism.
I liked Aliens it was well done, but I get what you're saying, it was that moment when people start "eff-ing" with something that was already good. Cameron was the one who first tweeked the creature design, I think just the head of the creature, and added the queen alien. The queen wasn't bad, but it was like you said making the über scary creature more associated with ants/bugs.
No you're not rare at all, A lot of fans prefer Alien to Aliens.
Ive always preferred Alien for a number of reason. Lol I thought I was the only one. Aliens is still a fantastic film though and probably my favourite sequel ever besides Empire Strikes Back and T2.
A lot of us prefer Alien, although Aliens was great. Personally I like all of the films in the franchise to a degree, but the first two just have a certain feel that the others can't match, and out of the two it's better accentuated in the first one.
Both movies were perfect for what they were. Alien was an artsy, purely horror sci-fi film. And Aliens was a sci fi action film with horror elements. But both movies were clearly very invested in the story and the material they were working with. Scott fully embraced Giger's work the moment he laid eyes on it. And James Cameron went quite out of his way to make sure the sequel could get the proper funding to happen. Not just for money, but because he legitimately wanted a good sequel that expands upon and fully utilizes the assets of the first movie, along with his own take on it. Cameron was behind Terminator as well, he's no stranger to sci fi horror. But he also did what he does best, an action movie.
Great video. But I am disappointed you didn't mention Jodorowsky's Dune. Most of the Alien creative team (O'Bannon, Giger, Chris Foss) met during pre-production of that movie. When it was cancelled O'Bannon started working on the Alien script, and down the line convinced Ridley Scott to work with Giger.
Btw, the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune is amazing.
Best alien design ever.
Predator enemy design
makes you glad that there are such inspired unique artists such as Giger that can bring such iconic designs to this world.
alien is better than predator, and i love predator...
Agreed, Alien, the original, is a masterpiece...
Oddly enough it was James Cameron(who directed aliens) who made the suggestion for the predator design to incorporate a face with mandibles
Nicolas I agree, but its pretty unfair to really try and compare considering Predator itself is very inspired by Alien
they are both excellent, it's just a preference thing; alpha predator or alpha hunter...
Nicolas I mean as films, you can't really compare one movie to the movie that directly inspired it.
Me: OoOoO KK has a new video up *clicks link*insta-like without even watching video*share on facebook*posts obligatory "Do Avatar: The Last Airbender next comment"*watches video*
as long as it is about the original animated series and not the live-action movie...
"Arousing"? Whatever floats your boat man.
Maybe not arousing, but the xenomorph is based around highly sexual themes.
Look at more of Giger art. It's definitely sexual.
It doesn't have to be sexual arousal
Perhaps the term does not mean what you think it means
There is actually an audience for xenomorph porn, strange as it may sound
he wanted to make the alien A E S T H E T I C
Design of the Alien is great. Its not some disease monster that people love to make (cause its so easy). Like i hated how the early Warhammer artists would make orcs appear horrifying by just painting their skin full of pus oozing pimples. Sure it makes them look horrifying. But its the same kind of horrifying as when you see a diseased rat. Its just lazy. When designing monsters or aliens, i would like designers to look at real animals and try to figure out what makes them look intimidating or scary. And not just try to figure how to use porridge and a bit of food coloring to make a monsters... Okay, im just sick of cancer monsters being the default type of monster that designers go to :(
The father of aliens. Perfect
Within two days we've gotten new videos from Now You See It, Lessons from a Screenplay, Cinefix, Every Frame a Painting, and now kaptainkristian? This is awesome!!
U still watch them?
Lmao, I actually don't anymore
Shame the man didn't get more press for his work. I only learned about him when I went into my animation degree
I tapped the notification as soon as I saw it
I'm pretty sure H.R. Giger is an alien himself.
People like him, understand just been yourself don’t act like the masses.
Giger: They say I'm the father of the Alien.- It's ok!
kaptainkristian what's your source for the use of a real skull? From what I read a real skull was only used to make the mold for the one used in the suit.
I love the Alien Franchise. Especially the first film. The Alien has always intrigued me, and it's design is legendary. Excellent video my dude.
The content on this channel is absolutely fantastic, it just doesn't get old I love it. Also it would be cool to have a video of Cowboy Bebop, very unique, intriguing series. Just a thought.
You just keep making the exact videos that I want to see. Masterpieces every time.
Dan O' Bannon actually met H.R. Giger during the production of "Dune" that was suppose to be directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky before it got cancelled. Salvador Dali showed Alejandro some of H.R. Giger's work thinking he could be useful for the "Dune" project. Dan O' Bannon was in charge of the special effects work.
Dan O'Banon actually met Gieger while they were working on Alejandro Jodorowsky's Dune. When that movie was unfortunately not made, they continued working on the Alien.
Jodorowsky would be a good episode as well
I was actually kind of surprised he left this detail out and made no mention of Jodorowsky.
Maur DL I was surprised as well.
and you do it again, your content is unparalleled in quality, and i seriously can't get enough.
First time I heard an American pronouncing Giger last name correctly
Metro Nerds I only ever saw his name in writing for the first 20 years of my life never spoken so. Before the internet most Americans never did
It is refreshing to see someone pointing out things that are amazing, instead of these that nitpick for comedic value. We need more like this.
Make one on Death Note please. If you haven't seen Death Note, watch Death Note and then make one on Death Note.
He chooses what he wants, what is influential to his mind.
He will only make videos about the greatest, so forget death note.
Yes! Death Note!
“The Father of the Xenomorph” that is a cool title
Father of the Yautja enemy.
When he said:
"There's a beauty in horror, the seductive nature of something terrifying. And nowhere is that more present than in the design of H. R. Giger's"
I kinda hoped he'd say "Killer Condom", but alas he missed the chance.
Awesome video!
I'm drawing a lot of alien shit on IG these days because of how much this design and the Giger aesthetic impacted me. Check it out: instagram.com/craig_smye
Seriously every single time I can't help but mention how high quality these videos are. Blows everything else on youtube away, including its closest counterpart Every Frame a Painting
Y'know I was just today looking up information on Giger for the first time in years, for an assignment. Some coincidence, huh. At least from my perspective.
I really love that statue of his, "Birth Machine" or something like that.
One on Avatar the last airbender
Yes, please!!!
yes!
is it that good? i've always put it off. then i saw it on reddit the other day from someone hailing it as one of the best things they have ever seen and with much support from le reddit army. is it that good?
yes it has everything great animation story acting action and great ending
Tyler Roach
i'll give it a shot in the future. any other ones to recommend? non anime? i'm more into japanese animation.
Keep up the amazing work! Its well appreciated and I know you'll do more amazing things in the future
Time to start back at red thumbnails
Woah, I never noticed that. Good eye!
+SamuelAdams1994 he posted it on twitter.
I think purple is next?
Thanks for every video you make man
It really is true, the xenomorph is scary, but it's more than that, it's also beautiful. Monster designs usually go for the scare factor and that's it, but with the xenomorph it becomes scary because you have to admit that it is beautiful as well.
Xenomorph :)
SensualCream Ah, thank you for correcting me. I was really fucking tired when I wrote that.
just for completion's sake: Ridley Scott’s titular monster might have been designed by the artist H.R. Giger, but the spacecraft the movie takes place on was Giraud’s brainchild. The USCSS Nostromo and the space suits worn by Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley and her doomed crewmates were originally designed by Giraud, who worked as a concept artist on the film. Giraud also contributed storyboards, helping visualize important scenes like the crew’s discovery of a downed alien spacecraf.
www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/meet-the-man-who-helped-define-how-science-fiction-looks-180959080/
The xenomorph really is something special, and so is Giger's work in general. He basically created an entire genre of visual art, and a diverse one at that
actually H.R giger was also just inspired by another artists who put that biomechanical stuff long before Giger hisself perfected it, something u can research urself from ur home computer
OOOOOO ANOTHER KaptainKristian Video!!!
I'm right on time.
Btw. Most of his drawings were inspired by Pagano-Satanism, H.P. Lovecraft and his (Giger's) LSD trips (and nightmares too). So all the Alien fans - praise the LSD!
Raimudal Lezel Sabmetbe-Rotha Lovecraft was sooo influential... It's ridiculous.
I am not ashamed to say I get turned on sometimes by the creature. It is a very sexual looking creature. It also doesn't help that I read fanfics.
Galaxeus got any links? For scientific research of course
Inb4 viral!
