I am vegetarian and have never had a problem in Mexico. I have traveled with a vegan friend, and that is a little more challenging. In CDMX my husband and I did a fabulous vegetarian food tour called Eat Like a Local and we went to a bunch of different places, including the Jamaica market, and sampled amazing vegetarian food. The one thing to watch out for is manteca, I have found. I went to eat with my Spanish class to the Central de Abastos in Oaxaca. Doña Vale is well known for her memelas! I really wanted to try them and after I had one I realized it had been cooked in lard… but there are times when I just do “don’t ask don’t tell” because I really want to have cultural experiences!
Ufffff those memelas are legendary! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience traveling in Mexico as a vegetarian! Great recommendation with the food tour in Mexico City 🥰
It is definitely possible to be vegan in Mexico! My husband is vegan in Mexico and he loves pambazos, tacos, tamales, sopes, ect And at some big chain grocery stores they have vegan meat such as Beyond Burgers, Beyond Sausages, Beyond Steak (see Costco and some Walmarts and Mr. Tofu just to name a few)
Lots of great natural meat alternatives too in Mexican cuisine which I talk about in the video 🤓 Thank you for sharing your experience being vegan in Mexico!
There is sooooooo many vegan options in Mexico. We visited in 2021-2022 for 6months and we found so many vegan options while there. In CDMX, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Tulum, etc
OMG I just noticed youre not the backpacking brunette anymore! In any case this is yet another great topic. I'm not vegan but avoid red meat and only eat chicken and seafood. That means I can't try most MX specialities. For example small taco places typically offer beef and pork and that's it. A little frustrating but it's my choice. Also kudos on your succinct seven minute presentations. So professional. Gracias.
Thanks so much for this video, I really appreciate the vocabulary part, I agree that saying I don't eat meat gets the meaning across more successfully! I'm glad that you mentioned the Happy Cow app, I would suggest that those who use it call the restaurant before going there, I have heard of people arriving at the restaurant only to find that it is closed or closed permanently. Would you be able to ask your friends about eating street food? Thank you, Alex!
Hi, I'm Raw Plantarian, which means that my absolute staple food is " Trigo de Sarraceno " ( dorado) Buckwheat. Is this readily available in most towns in Mexico ? Best wishes . 😊
I learnt very quickly to say No como nada que vengas a los animales (hopefully i wrote that right), but even then they think cheese is ok. You just need to be patient and i have never had a problem asking for cheese to be taken off something to make it vegan.
As a vegan, I think CDMX is the greatest city for vegans in *at least* the Western hemisphere, if not the world. "Doesn't eat red meat" is considered "Texas vegetarian" where I’m originally from :)
Wow greatest city for vegans! Incredible! I would love to try some of the vegan seafood spots that Estreyah recommended in the video the next time I'm in CDMX!
I only included specific restaurant recommendations from the cities where my interviewees were from. One of my favorite vegan spots is in San Pancho...Yasmina's! Please feel free to share your Vallarta faves.
I should add that, as a vegan, there is an implicit insult inherent in asking for vegan or vegetarian options...your basically saying you're too good to eat the food other people (including the ones serving you) eat. Only the top of the food chain north American and northern European gringos would ask this. The hipster areas such as La Condessa, Colonia Americana, and Zipolite cater to it.
Hi. Hope you're having fun in Mexico. You said in a different video that you have Mexican descent and come from the state of San Luis Potosí. Have you traveled to San Miguel de Allende before?! If you haven't then I suggest you go there because it's wonderful. Btw you look so beautiful 😍
I used to live in Queretaro which was only an hour away from San Miguel so I've been there several times & actually have some vlogs from the time I spent there! Lovely town 🥰
At 1:41 I mentioned three foods that adventurous eaters need to try 👀 which one are you most likely to eat??
Nopales
Flores de Calabaza sounds interesting 😋

In Queretaro Taco Green is the absolute best vegan place as well as VegCo and Vanggie are also great.

@@alex-wittman The burgers at Taco Green on the lunch menu are so good!

We recently had a friend visit us who mostly just eats chicken & until then, I hadn't realized how uncommon that is at taco places!
Alex, now that you live in Gdl, you must visit restaurant "Los Otates". This mexican gourmet at best. You will Love
Thank you for the recommendation!
Thanks Alex.😊

I feel like restaurants are generally pretty accommodating!
@@alex-wittman 100%. Even at Jardín de Cerveza Hércules in Queretaro they will take the cheese off the Fungi pizza and it is delicious!
Thanks Alex
Thanks for watching, Jane!

Hola Alex saludos.
I need a similar video for people who can’t handle spicy food.
In my experience, servers in Mexico are very conscious of explaining the spice levels especially to foreigners!
@@alex-wittman Thank you!
Thank you dear
I am vegan and I seek to live in a place where Veganism is important. Apart Mexico City, any suggestion. Thanks in advance!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Did you leave out the whole west coast? Vallarta has amazing vegan options.

On the other hand, much of Latin America is a carnivore paradise. The quality of the meat is excellent as is the quality of the food.
There's definitely something for everyone!
