      Even the wigs for us regular folks have come a looooooong way from my granny’s wigs back in the day. The wigs now don’t look so artificial like in the 70s and 80s and more people know how to do natural looking installs and how to care for their wigs than did back then.

      I think it must be said that many black women feel this way: “loose waves make me feel like a princess.” The fact that people don’t recognize the colonialism and Eurocentricity in that comment is part of why the black community is progressing back to a state of self love much, much, slower than it could be 😢
      Ironically, I feel like a princess when I pick out my Afro, I literally admire that my shrinkage protects my strands naturally, it’s a reflection of the strongest yet most feminine matriarchs in my family, and our beautiful black hair is something very unique and regal about us that’s still not getting the appreciation it deserves.

    This is very insightful , Kerry Washington also mentioned that when she started her natural hair journey to teach her kids to embrace their natural beauty as well as their natural hair texture, she mentioned that she had to sometimes wear wigs going from shows to red carpet events back to back--she mentioned that she would wear wigs that are similar to her hair texture, because she still wanted to keep her natural appearance, but protect her natural hair also from heat damage not just from styling but from stage lights and cameras, she said “ people don’t realize when you’re on stage under billions of lights it can get really hot under there. But when I’m off camera I wear my natural curls freely and my kids love it!” I love that woman! Lol ❤

    No one looks twice if you're wearing a hat, a wig is just a hairy hat. They've been worn since the dawn of time and, as long as you make sure it's as well maintained as your real hair, and the style/ colour, suits you, there should never be a problem when you put one on.

    Eons ago when I did runway I allowed the stylists to do whatever they wanted to my own hair. In two years my hair was gone and she was not coming back. For a casting I was required to have long straight hair and the weaving game was on. I did weaves, extensions, wigs, clip-ins, pieces whatever the clients wanted and very seldom over 15 years, wore my own hair. To the point that when I stopped few people knew the difference but by then I had a healthy head of hair! I still have my "girls" but I wear them more for weather issues or emergencies!

      This makes sense because there’s a lot of give and take, a lot of conformity involved. A lot of women blame wearing wigs on convenience but more often just don’t have appreciation for black hair textures. This is proven by the selected styles and exclusion of others time and time again.

    • @OneTwo-yw4ij
      @OneTwo-yw4ij Рік тому +1

      @@MiVidaBellisima, Everyone wears wigs for their own reasons. Assuming why people choose certain textures over others is silly. I own wigs with all types of textures and curl patterns, except bone straight/ silky. Constant manipulation, coloring, detangling, and adding tension to your natural hair will damage it. Black hair grows better when it's well moisturized and left alone.

    I really hope people just stop being so concerned about what people do or don't do with their hair-- wigged, natural, weaved, colored, or chemically treated. I wish I still had hair to have all these choices, but Lupus took my hair and for over a decade now I've been forced to wear wigs. What I'm really happy to see is the rise of natural afro textured wigs in the last couple of years. Before I lost my hair, I wore my hair in afros or twists, and it was a struggle at first to find good wigs that mimic those styles in my kinky/coily texture. As more people demand wigs, the more styles and textures we get. I'm here for it.

I love the explanation - it's also a beauty standard we've come to expect from celebrities without realizing our expectations of these people have made wearing wigs/weaves almost necessary. Wouldn't mind the celebrity money, but I would probably find it exhausting to keep up with a perfect look every time I stepped out of my house (famous role or not) - no wonder celebs live in gated communities or overseas to avoid the judging paparazzi!

      @BrightBlue Actually, they don't. I've been wearing hair since my 20's. Units have come a very long way since then.
      They now have lace fronts, which are the most realistic. Some ppl wear them incorrectly by putting them behind their hairline. They are designed to be worn on the hairline. Otherwise, they start looking like a hair headband.
      Ppl also tend to put makeup on the part. They should wear a beige or tan wig grip instead.
      Then they try to match up the parting space with the complexion of their face. That is a mistake also. Our scalps are way lighter than our faces bec it doesn't get exposed to the sun like our face does. So it's more about errors than bad-looking hair.

    Hey, Linwood!! Quick question: any recommendations for ingrown hair on the scalp? Thanks for all you do!!!

    • @GetGlamFam
      @GetGlamFam  Рік тому +8

      You first want to have it looked at and make sure it’s ingrown hair and not folliculitis. But they make scalp exfoliates that you apply with a toothbrush like brush that can really help.

    I don’t think there is just one answer because some celebrities have said it is for protection and others say they don’t like their real hair. I am not a huge fan of wigs unless it is like for a party because I find them hot and uncomfortable. Plus my hair is long and dense so unless I get cornrows the wigs feel tight. I once had a beauty supply store refuse to let me try on a wig because they said I had too much hair.

    Thank you for your explanation of why all races of women wear wigs. I have been wearing wigs for years. Intake good care of my natural hair. I wear it out when I am sick of a wig on my head. I keep it moisturized and oiled. Keep my ends trimmed.

    I am trying to get comfortable in having my hair out more often but even with low manipulation and just try to make it look presentable in a afro. It is very complicated. I have to slap on a wig because it takes less time and effort and I don't have to worry about looking less presentable other than just having my hair taken care of with cornrows and a wig cap.

      It can be a process, sometimes it comes with retraining your thinking around it. I think a lot of us have been fed all sorts of things for what is considered “professional” for hair, and often it’s synonymous with “straight” 😩

    do you have any opinions on PEGs, or petroleum in hair products? Also, I feel confident that you have a video on how to preserve a twist out on short 4c hair. I can never get more than a day and have to re-twist nightly :(.Can you please send the link if you have a video about it. Thanks! :D

    I’m a novice wig-wearer and one of the main reasons why I started wearing wigs is because I got dog tired of buying oddles and oodles of hair products, and harming my hair with relaxers to keep my terrible frizz at bay. It just became TOO much. Wigs work for me, and I’m content with that.

    In theatre wigs are easier to deal with. The hair crew can knock out the touch ups in between performances and the actors/dancers can get ready faster by not having to get hair ready too.
