    Recently Google had a doodle about a woman scientist, being one myself, I went to Wikipedia to learn a bit. It said that "she never married and bought a farm with one female FRIEND whom with she lived her entire life"
    Are you kidding me? Friend?

      This may be stating the obvious but with the times being what they were, most gay and lesbian couples weren't exactly open about it. This means that who was and wasn't, wasn't always obvious. In cases where it's practically plastered on a billboard, some still choose to adopt the default assumption that "it wasn't obvious for reasons. With the number of people that contribute to a wikipedia article, never mind the number of possible revisions, who can say?

    Everything about Anne Lister's life and legacy comes down to pure luck. Luck that she found herself in a spot where she had complete financial freedom (even though her brothers had to die for her to obtain Shibden Hall), luck that she thought to record her every waking moment in secret code, luck that her prolific diaries were never destroyed either by time, the elements, or her descendants, luck that they were discovered at all. I'm so thankful that the universe seemed to conspire to ensure Anne's legacy wasn't erased so that future historians and sapphics alike could have a rare, clear view into one historical lesbian's life.

    • @Alina_Schmidt
      @Alina_Schmidt 2 роки тому +5

      To me it‘s not the universe but a combination of coincidences. All of them combined seem very unlikely, for sure. But given how many queer* people must have existed throughout history - many of whom we know nothing or very little about or can‘t be sure if or how they were queer - it‘s not that unlikely that there would be clearer records of at least a few of them. And Ann Lister isn‘t a too unlikely canidate to be among this few: She was rich, had the ability to write, had the ability to write in code and had enough time to write.
      * and even ‚queer’ is kind if ahistorical for people who lived before that term was commonplace - in the lack of a better word

    Ann Walker did not check herself into asylum. She was forced, after her bro in law, aka @hole, argued for and had her “diagnosed” insane. He finally inherited her fortune, and then died a year later. Her aunt two years later, asked to have Ann return to her estate. Her aunt then died, and Ann inherited Shibden Hall again for 9 years, finding out Anne Lister’s truths (snd lies) about her worth. Both women, are incredible in their own way.

    Ann Walker didn't check her into the asylum she was committed by her gold digging brother in law (her sister's husband ) so he could gained control her and Anne L's estate because Anne left her everything including Shibden Hall. She did leave the asylum after two years her aunt brought her home to Crow Nest/ Cliff Hill . She gained back control of Anne's Estate too but stayed at Cliff Hill until she died in 1854 at the age of 51.

I remember laughing thinking "this is such fiction, this doesn't happen in real life obviously" only for Anne Lister (lesbian legend) to have done this 200 years ago and IN THE 1800S NO LESS!! It's great to learn of her! Though claims that GNC historical women must have been "transmen" always feels like it's missing the point. Until women truly have the rights, autonomy, and freedom equal to men, any cross-dressing or transgender claims must be taken with a grain of salt. Lack of access alongside misogyny can be severely internalized and makes for some strong ulterior motives.

    While I do love my Gentleman Jack, and I love your videos… I just recently rewatch this again. The picture you showed of Eliza is a different Eliza than the one she had met while in school and was her first love. The reason for the dressing all in black was because Mariana married Charles Lawton(for financial stability) and their marriage “dissolved” because Mariana wouldn’t leave Charles.
    I’ve learned so much more from the diaries and the constant decoding and new info that has been surfacing...💜 (sorry for the rambling🤦‍♀️)

    I think you my lovely woman, are what I've needed for a long time now. A woman who has a shirt on that says "because gay", who has a hairstyle that I keep seeing in the covers of the vintage records I adore and search for and who has a make up reminding me of Celia Foote in The Help. Soooo, I love ya and thank you.

    It's pretty amazing her diary survived. Historians researching LGBT historical figures often struggle to find a lot of information because many people were too afraid to write anything that might be "incriminating" down, and even when they did if someone else found that information written later they would often destroy the writings.

    I saw a lot of billboards for Gentleman Jack when I was visiting England but I assumed it was going to be one of those speculative things where the creators made up a bunch of slightly gay stuff to be “visionary” or “shocking” but it’s great to know that it’s actually based on her diary! We love primary sources!

    I love historical lesbian stuff. If you have time, I would adore a deep dive into the world of Natalie Clifford Barney, Liane De Pougy, Renee Vivian and the Belle Epoque lesbians (you have a more probable trans man in the mix there too). Alla Nazimova and her world of sewing circles could be fun...either one would give you a whole cast of sapphic ladies.

    By the rules of traditional marriage, which was a business contract between two families, sexual relations between a married woman and another woman wasn't adultery - there was no risk of conceiving a child out of wedlock, so it wasn't a problem.

    Historical butch is definitely my type. Rachel Weiss in the favourite?!
    Also I read a book about sex pre 1950, and apparently Victorian men were expected to sleep with women other than their wives, and said wives often took pleasure in their female friends. Not to say they were all lesbians or bisexual, putting modern terms on different historical conceptions of sexuality is anachronistic (which is not to say that people we would now call gay didn't exist). Studying historical sexuality is so confusing.
