- Tourists and locals captured images of the iconic Oceanside Pier Friday, one day after a devastating blaze erupted at the end of the structure.
"We were in the middle of actually re-doing the concrete part," said Mayor Esther Sanchez. "That's like a $40 million dollar project. To have this happen, we're all brokenhearted."
She said she's already gotten calls from state and federal leaders, offering their support in rebuilding the pier.
Friday firefighters remained at the scene, watering down hot spots. The fire appears to have started in the old Ruby's Diner. So far, investigators have not determined what sparked the fire. The ATF is assisting in the investigation.
Oceanside Fire Chief David Parsons said fire crews from multiple agencies worked through the night and were able to save 90% of the pier.

I saw this on the news last night, no cause as of yet, and everyone got away from the fire safely.
So sad 😢 Ruby's was a great place to eat, prior to covid shutdown. Love this pier & beach as well. Hope the pier is repaired. ❤ from IN
why are people claiming it was an inside insurance fraud job?
Couldn't drop a hose down and pull water from the ocean?
Salt water on a fire is very hazardous. One it destroys the pumps, two it releases noxious gases. So no sea water is not a good idea.
It’s salt water it won’t work.
@@00leaveraloneI’m sorry, what?
@@fishingcreator5217 The fire department would have to build a temporary Desalination Plant on the pier to refine the ocean water and make it suitable to put out the flames. Otherwise, 💥 BOOM!
The pier in Santa Cruz has platforms under it, near the waterline, and viewing areas to see the seals basking on them. It is a good tourist draw. Something to think about for the rebuild?
What a bummer! Looks like the end is a total loss
What happened 😮😢😮
This is one day later you need a better fire department is still smoldering what there wasn't enough water to put it completely out you had a whole ocean yeah you need a better fire department
so, what you're REALLY trying to say is?
