@@smiffyuk2003 Hi Andy,Happy New Year!I am Jack from Gomexus (a custom reel company ),We are going to design a plug-and-Go handle for daiwa emblem SCW 45,would you mind drop us some suggestions on the handle and knob that we should make?We would like to send you one once we released them handle. Thanks in advance 😊
Good evening, no-rant from me tonight lol. I have got 1400 xtd reels and matching spod reel. Must admit the spod reel is the best one I’ve had tbh, used Diawa, wychwood riot. Line lay is great, like you said the drag isn’t the quickest so I put carbon washers in and now in less that half turn it’s solid. With my fishing reels there is an issue with the line going under the spool, happens more when I use fluorocarbon, must be the lack of suppleness I’m guessing but the idea of the line guard is to stop this, but it doesn’t so pointless really. Again line lay is great and line peels off on cast. Just purchased some fox rx plus alarms. They are a treat. Loving ur info.
Evening Nick! Cheers for watching, what do you think of the carbon washers? Which ones are the best to buy. I’m going to get some 5500 ultegras to use on my stalking set up for the caravan. I have the same issue with fluorocarbon too. I tend to tie it off and stretch it and that helps but I’m not a big fan of the stuff. How are you finding them? Never used them myself.
Just purchased the ice washer kit , cost about £7 a pack couple years back. There’s loads on market now and most of them are good quality anyway. Had no issues. Makes all the difference
Coming from a being a big shimano fan,im absolutely shocked at how bad the ultegra xtd is. 4 months of use and it started locking up at times,5 months in and it properly siezed up! And i NEVER dunk my reels! Sent it back to shimano as was under warranty, shimano said the gears are completely siezed due to severe water ingress and the warranty is void because i must of been dunking them🙄 They said it would be around £80 to repair. Absolute shocking response and Absolute shocking reel. Told them to send it back to me and I'll buy a diawa emblem! The shimano xtd is the worst reel ive ever had👎🏻
The best bang for your buck for a spod reel it's: Okuma inception 8000 ! It's light, it gots 2 line clips, and it retrives 123cm of line. It's not marketed as a spod reel but it's a best buy for spoding. I bought it for a heavy feeder but surprize it's a spod reel. I wanted to buy the daiwa but now i stick with the okuma :)
Never used any of the Okuma range to be fair pal but a lot of people do swear by them. Have you used either the Daiwa or the Shimano? If so what do you think of them?
Hi buddy if was advertised to buy the Diawa spod reel my my local shop it worked fine for 9 months then it sized up solid. I returned it to the shop and they returned it to Diawa I was fishing every week so purchased another Diawa spod reel they told me they would credit me with the new price if Diawa just replaced the seized reel they returned it serviced. It lasted 18 months and failed again. I bought a Shimano spod reel it was way smother and retrieved more line per turn. I was so surprised how smooth the retrieve was. I do use Diawa main reels Baisers so not a Shimano fan. But the new latest Shimano Spod reel was a revelation . Diawa should get a new design team working on a much better spod reel they get much more hammer than a normal fishing reel and need beefing up and making smoother in operation.
Hi Alan sorry about the late reply I’ve been very unwell the last few weeks. Couple of things to take in to consideration. When you leave it against your bivvy when it’s raining do you keep the spool in the lowest position this protects the inner workings. Do you dunk your reels to wet the line. Both my Daiwa and shimano reels have been battered and they are both working as new after a couple of years and no servicing. Thank you for watching much appreciated. I’ve not seen the latest models of the shimanos I need to have a look
I used the emblem spod and no but issues but just noisy and felt clunky. Just bought shimano ultegra spod and has been good with no issues. I've always used shimano reels GTE 10000, longcasts, ultegra 5500 and 12000 black mags... never any issues with any and all work like new!
@@CaravanCarpers I haven't seen them yet. 1 thing that did concern me with the new shimano reels is they're made in Malaysia rather than Japan... any difference who knows?!
Being a shimano man I was really disappointed with my new spod reels as they let water in and seized so have since bought the daiwa spod reels and they seem much better just to say that I do not dunk my reels thanks
Happy days pal! Madness isn’t it I’ve got some old windcast z’s never been serviced ect and they are bomb proof but the newer stuff just isn’t as good! Shame really
Really interesting honest review Lee. I look forward to watching your future "Tackle Tuesday" reviews, and comparing the Daiwa / Shimano reels with Dave "Carponeiger".

If u want to speed the drag up on shimano switch washers to ice drag washers as the xtds come with greased felt washers unlike the xtcs which come with ptfe washers which is loads better and whilst ice washers are too fast and don't give enough increments for fishing situations there brilliant for a spod and marker reel and there fairly cheap. And like u I don't have a preference between diawa or shimano I have xtc14000 for distance fishing and crosscast 5000 for shorter range but all of my spod reels are shimano 2x xtd14000 long range 13ft rods and aerex 10000 on my 10ft spod I am surprised people think shimano reels fall apart build quality is second to none hence why they hold value really well but diawa have been about since the dawn of time and are usually reliable surprised to hear mag sealed seized up a bit i wonder if all mag sealed do this just a thought
Hi Colin, believe it or not I’ve ordered some ice washers, I’ve not fitted them yet though. Yea I’ve had no issues myself and a few friends have them but in the fishing groups I’m in on WhatsApp/Facebook a few people have had bad experiences. It’s mainly the BR version of the Daiwa Castizm that have had the issue I believe. My QDA versions have been brilliant. It could be isolated to that reel model but it just puts me off spending the extra for it now if that makes sense. Thank you for taking the time to comment such an in-depth comment 👌🏻
I just bought a Spod reel (for tench mainly). I bought the original Daiwa Emblem Spod reel that has been around for years. I could have got the reel in your video for less money but I reckoned the plain old Emblem Spod looked better built and more gutsy. Even if it is old tech and agricultural looking in comparison. You mentioned the old Cast izm 25 QDA's. I managed to get three of those new from an Austrian dealer even though they are now discontinued. I felt they were better than the current offerings. For my needs anyway. I was always a Shimano Guy but rightly or wrongly I feel they are not as good as they used to be. Then again what is? I still have a pair of their old 5000 GTE Baitrunners and three of the original 10,000 XTE (10 K) Baitrunners. I will never let them go. 🙂 Take care.
Hiya pal, To be honest I toyed on the idea of getting the original but was advised to get the newer version. Not had no issues with it so far so pretty happy with it. In all fairness it’s a bit of an iconic spod reel isn’t it so it’s stood the test of time. Castizm QDA’s are one of my fav reels absolutely love them but the br 25A version is terrible! A lot of people saying that at the min to be fair I’ve never been a fan so I though I’d just try one and it’d been ok so far. Thanks for watching and commented much appreciated pal 👌🏻

Ive used the korda stuff, changed to the fox stuff and love it. Ive just bought the thicker Gardner stuff and yet to try it. Shock-leader Gardner all the way or armakourd if you dont mind the price
Thanks👍I was using j braid straight through for short range in a decent breaking strain but would crack off at the knot after a while. I'm using it with armakord shockleader again now but was trying to stop the faff of knot at bottom of spool... can't have it all I guess!
The gardner stuff is a bit thicker and 35lb so you dont need a sock leader. Im just yet to use it and see how it effects long range work but when i do ill let you know pal
I had the ultegra xtd 5500 they are the shittest reels I ever have used got them a week after they came out and with in 6 months the bearing started I had the serviced and found they ain't bearings no more just plastic bushings I have okuma trio rexs omg so much smoother and I have had them few years now all I have done is grease them once a year
To be fair some of the Daiwas have been the same I’ve had just getting 3 of mine repaired at the min that have been used on decking at the caravan in nothing but the odd bit of rain! I think that’s the thing these days everything is more expensive but far worse made as they cut corners to make the most money don’t they. Never seen the Okumas in the flesh. Might be worth a look if I ever want some new reels in the future
@@CaravanCarpers I think all the big manufacturers build them like mobile phones now days tbh the mid range stuff is nothing like it used to be but the okuma t rex has proper ball-bearings and not cheap Chinese tat ether they are a bit on the heavy side but are on buzzers most of the time but they are made from aluminium 100 quid for one the waterproofing is so much better than shimano to
