    With this useful tutorial I want to touch on a very special and usefull technique of stretching and narrowing down the duration of a layer or composition. Time Stretching can come very handy while working on several layers which needs to be quickly adjustment to either take longer to play or less to finish. Time Stretching affects keyframes and all properties of a layer so you can achieve all that with one click. Subscribe to the channel if you enjoy this tutorial!

      Of course, if you have a video stretching it will make it slower and choppy since this doesn't interpolate it just makes it longer as is.I'm not sure how to stretch a video while maintaining all frames or at least interpolating them so the frames would be filled between stretch

    I didn't know the existence of the "Stretch collumn", very handy thank you !
    However it's doesn't resolve my issue... How can I make an easy in/easy out for the Running Fighter.gif ? (like he's running slow, than fast, than slow again ?) Can I animate the "stretch % value" ?
    Or should I duplicate the gif so many times to make change the % value manually ? Do you have any solution ?

    • @andrewpach
      @andrewpach  5 років тому

      You can add multiple keyframes and slow them / speed them up by stretching it even more. You don't alternate the strech value but yes, you add more keyframes and you adjust the time it takes to play that particular part between 2 keyframes :)

    it is possible to time stretch a video footage without affecting it's normal speed. because i conduct some test on the live background footage I download earlier. it was only 10 sec long and it tried to use time stretch on AE. it looks like when i make them long the normal speed of the original footage was decreased and i want to make them long without losing their original speed. don't you think it is possible? because i tried some tutorials but all of them are not working....

    • @andrewpach
      @andrewpach  3 роки тому +1

      From what I know you can only find some work-arounds to maintain the same audio pitch, but you can't slow / stretch a video without changing it's speed and duration as well :/
      Like no youtube, when you press SHIFT+> you make the video 1.25. It takes the same amount of time to play but....the seconds flow faster :)

    • @andrewpach

      Sure Reece, it's easier thank you think! The mistake you make is that you have something on your timeline selected. what settings is everyone using to save their compositions...?? I'm having trouble figuring out how to do it. I think I'm missing some options or codecs. I can render uncompressed but the file sizes are too large.

    • @andrewpach
      @andrewpach  4 роки тому +1

      You should be render using the H.264 codec which would result in an MP4. Try using the Adobe Media Encoder Queue if you use a newer version of after effects, they migrated all the rendering there.

    • @jonathanbrazeau970
      @jonathanbrazeau970 4 роки тому

      @@andrewpach I actually had to download "Quicktime" on my computer which then automatically installed all the codecs for me. So I just use .Mov and it works... One strange thing though. I have some brush animations+ solid text so I want to render in alpha (transparent background)..... But the text comes out transparent also, I want it to be solid. Not sure if this is a bug with the effects or if there is a setting for this..

    I have a problem. I created a credit crawl scene with text & the position keyframes for my video like one of your tutorials told me to do, but it goes up too fast & you never explained how to fix that if that happens. Then I used time stretch AND time warp, & they both fix the speed, but now the credit crawl gets cut off early & therefore the duration of the video is shorter. How do I avoid that? ? I need to both slow the credit crawl down AND obviously still keep the length of my video :-/

    • @andrewpach
      @andrewpach  5 років тому +1

      Hello mate! But why would you even want to use time stretch with such animations? Can't you slow down the initial animation beforehand instead of adding another layer of keyframes on top of it, I think that would be much easier. Hmm First off I would either decide for a time warp or time stretch, you don't need both I suppose.You have seen a cut-off because the composition you are stretching and warping has ended (the actual layer with the text is limited so you need to go to your first comp > hit CTRL+K and extend the composition. "Once it's extended you can make the layers longer which would be a good start to fixing this

    • @NiteSek4804
      @NiteSek4804 5 років тому

      @@andrewpach Naw, I didn't say I used time stretch & time warp at the SAME time. I just said I used them both. As in I tested each one. They both worked perfectly,... but I wasn't aware of the duration section of the composition itself, & how I had to position both the ending keyframe AND the end of layer bar off to the left with each other until I reached the end result I desired. I got it now. Thanx a bunch bud 😁👌
      Honestly, all these top notch programs are AWESOMENESS,... but I still can't help notice how retardedly unnecessary it is to have the most simple tasks fuck faced by some overly complicated design.... Like, how fucking hard is it to just program the damn application in a way to where you can just drag the damn composition end over? ?.....
      Ya ever ran across some retarded shit like that & couldn't help but think that whatever programmer or designer thought that shit up must have been sniffing fucking paint in the bathroom during their break or some shit? ? Lol
      Seriously though lol, it's ALWAYS some bullshit in life. If it's not one thing, it's fucking another Lol

    • @andrewpach
      @andrewpach  5 років тому

      Hah mate yeah I feel you but you also have to see what an immense amount of work it was to put a program like AE together, I'm still wondering that such programs work, it is pretty amazing too! But yeah it can be sometimes un-friendly to users and a bit daunting :/ I still like to work in it

    • @NiteSek4804
      @NiteSek4804 5 років тому

      @@andrewpach I kinda feel like programming it to just drag it over with your cursor would have actually been EASIER work them to perform actually, so I can't say I quite agree with that, so I don't forgive them for those type of decisions no more than I forgive Paul Fieg for his decisions in creating that last Ghostbusters movie......... Okay, maybe not THAT bad lol,... but meh.
      It is an amazing program though..... Makes me wonder what editing will be like for us 30 years from now. It wasn't even 30 years ago when we were still using Adobe Acrobat, AOL, gameboys, & gamesharks, so 30 years should add a lot to our plates 😊👌

    Thank you very much for the tutorial ... but i have one question
    I have After Effects template and I want to stretch a layer to a specific time put I want every thing in the layers that comes after it in the same composition to move automatically so that I don't have to move every thing manually ... is that possible ?
    what I mean i want one event to take more time but I want everything after it to start playing after that event as usual but after it ... because when I stretch a layer the layers after it don't move and they start playing while that stretched event is playing which does not look nice ...
    Thanks in advance

      +Mas Mas Hey mate, I don't fully understand but please try to precompose the layer you want to time-stretch. Click on the Layer > CTRL + SHIFT + C > Double click on the precomp and do the changes inside it, this way it will affect nothing else than the layer inside :)

      +PowerPoint & After Effects /w Andrzej Pach
      Wow you are fast ...Thank you for your fast response ...
      The layers are already precomposed ... the template is about a photo book ... each page is turned and stays still on the screen for about 5 seconds then the next page is turned and stays on still on the screen for about 5 seconds ... and so on ...
      what i want to do is to put a video and a text on the page and make it stay for about 30 seconds before the page is turned over ... the problem when i do that the following pages start playing ( and get displayed over the current page ) before the video is finished which not what i want ... is there any way to make the next pages\layers wait until the page and video in it finish playing ... is there any way to do that other than editing and moving every thing manually ..
      I am not a professional ... so editing and moving every thing manually will take ages with me
      Thank you my friend ... I appreciate that you are taking from your time to help someone you don't even know

    • @andrewpach
      @andrewpach  8 років тому

      +Mas Mas You will have to adjust all that manually on the timeline. IF you would like to use time-stretching you could eventually precompose EVERYTHING, and stretch the ENTIRE animation, but also the page turning would get slower (you would essentially need to adjust that with keyframes). So one way or another it has to be made manually else it falls apart :D If you need that project badly hire someone for example on fiverr to help you adjust your After Effects project as you require. Yeah I was currently at PC so I wanted to asnwer you, hope this at least points you a little bit in the right direction ;)

    How do you match duration when you increase the speed?

    • @andrewpach
      @andrewpach  7 років тому

      Hey mate, it has to be done step by step. Either you slow it down later, but most of the times you extend your composition / video to play a little longer, since you plan to slow motion / make something faster you also probably plan to composit it on another video / extend / shorten / or put it over that video. It's a process you have to take care of and thing when you do it
