351M is one of those good forgotten engines, they are heavy, low compression, but durable with good power if you get some pistons to give it 9.5-10:1 compression, bigger camshaft along with headers and 4V intake. They were choked by weezy 2V intakes, crammed with a puny 4k rpm peak cam so it never could get a good breath of air to make decent power in stock form. I have a 400 that will get EFI, i beam rods, 10:1 forged pistons and a turbo next year to go into my 79 f150 super cab long bed to be my tow pig. Just looking for 400hp on low/mild boost with flex fuel capability
Great build with the Aussie heads 302 closed chamber heads? Hell yeah that's what I would do if building the m. How much those heads run if you don't mind me asking just interested thanks
@@wesbodine6102Why take a 400 or 351m to the junk yard? People like me would gladly buy em and make them make as much power as your boring 460s. Don't ever throw away an old v8 unless the block has an unfixable crack, It's not like they're going to make more of them anytime soon.
@@nashbraymen9564 You're out of your mind if you think a 400 Ford can make as much power as a 460 and even if it could you'd be putting main bearings in it within 50,000 miles. I've been through all of this before and I don't care to discuss this any further!
@@wesbodine6102 If you're putting mains in every 50,000 then someone either rebuilt the engine wrong or it has been revved past the moon. If you don't like the 400 you can sell a 400 for $400 and someone would gladly take it off your hands. Stop the "throw it in the scrap yard" BS.

cam was the problem more than the heads . they can flow over 400 hp stock

I used ARP studs on mine, procedure for Lubing the washer was different if I remember. Nice engine

The best way to get horse power out of a 351/400M is to take it out take it to the junk yard and install a 460, that's what I did LOL!!

When I’m putting on heads I turn the engine 45 degrees so that there is no way the head will slip off. Cool build, are those Cleveland heads?
They are. 351Ms and 400s are tall deck Clevelands with 3” mains. I got these Aussie heads to raise compression to 10:1 instead of 8.3:1.

351W cannot make the torque down low like a 400 can. 351Ws are great, I got one with 241k but the 400s do not deserve to be thrown away.
