  • For all the details and all the "whys", please read the description of the first part of this playthrough.
In this part: Noctis reunites with his friends after many years. The world has changed. It's covered in darkness and daemons roam the world. Hammerhead turned into a military outpost. At this point, the game switches from the "corridor" and rushed action-packed style to a more "openish" form. However, it also gives the player a fake hope that they will be able to explore the entirety of the map to uncover its changed state. Unfortunately, players are given just a very narrow area to roam about and then after a forced cutscene, Noctis is taken to Hammerhead from where, reunited with his friends, moves to the destroyed Capital City to defeat Ardyn and fulfill the prophecy the players have been hearing about throughout the entire story. Here comes the standard question: were the devs again in a rush and cut out a lot of content or was this chapter intended to look like this. We get just a short mention about Cindy and do not get a chance to see her older iteration. Everything again seems rushed and to the point. After just several minutes at Hammerhead, we move onward to the final point of no return - the ruins of Insomnia. From that point, the game feels like an old-school JRPG. We get quite open locations, a hub, some exploration, roaming monsters to serve as random encounters. This is the pace that is maintained by the game till the very end - the grand finale. I would refer to the set of final fights as boss rush, a damn epic one indeed. During the fight with Ifrit I actually lolled because the shot of Noctis surrounded by half-naked goddesses/superior beings was such a "like a boss" moment. The fight with Ardyn? Dramatic and epic. The ending itself? Kind of disappointing. Although it was foreshadowed and suggested that Noctis must sacrifice himself, I still hoped that he would miraculously survive. Unfortunately, the game ends with his death and reunion with Lunafreya in the afterlife. I must admit that despite of the whole story being cryptic or, at times, incomprehensible, in the end the devs delivered a fantastic conclusion that truly fits the name "final fantasy".
Although I would not call this game one of my favorite of all time, but I'll definitely place it among the top 20 games I have ever played. It's graphically stunning, the music is phenomenal, the combat fluent and responsive, the mechanics interesting (with some completely redundant, I played through the whole game without even paying attention to magic skills or those "magic weapons of past kings", I don't even recall their name xD). This is my first Final Fantasy game I completed and I will definitely try other titles from this franchise, with Final Fantasy XVI just around the corner.
My adventure with this game does not end here, though. I will still play through the additional episodes, the DLC devoted to Ardyn, the co-op mode, NG+, with lots and lots of post-game content I want to see. Since the game concludes with Noctis's death, there is no continuation of the story as such. The save file gets a new icon in the save menu and players just start before the end of the game. From there they have the option to freely go back to the past open world (by using Umbra at camps) or explore and fight more daemons in Insomnia (with some really nasty and strong ones waiting).
