Great job Mike, as always a fantastic job and loved the "scan" affect that was excellent work. You by far have the best reviews on YT. Keep up the good work
Thanks Michael, this comparison solidify me from not ditching this old phone to another for the sake of the camera. Though my complaints is on the color over saturation of photos and less less (mock-ups) genuine apps available on windows app store.
Michael is the only one at pocketnow that his videos I really enjoy and ...... watch! By the way I prefer the use on the top, especially when I am lying on the bed. And you forgot to mention the sensorcore that sd400 have.. Guys if you have the money go straight for the 930 without a though. The denim update photos will blow your mind.
it doesn't matter. the internal storage is enough. but if it is not, you can use a micro-usb/otg adapter to read/write micro sd card memory as an external storage. like meenova, leef access, etc.
Alan Harake it doesn't mean 1020 doesn't, there is a solution for it.. . okay i know your solution is replace the phone (the whole specs) just because of there is no sdcard slot. alright then
I'm getting the 1020. It's just overall the better phone. Higher resolution screen, better camera, better build quality, much cheaper in price.... And since now the Denim update is available for 1020 I heard, the software is definitely up to date.
I own a Lumia 1020 and I LOVE IT. I really think that if you dont mind so much about the dimensions and design of the 1020 its a better choice than the 830. Yes, the 830 has more frequent updates and its kind of faster. But it doesn't take so many things at the same time because of the RAM and also the updates will get eventually to the 1020. I mean, the screen and the camara make it much better in my opinion. Update: Forget it. I now own an 830 and Love it too. I love the SD expansion and bigger screen with the lovely whites and its truly faster! Not that much but it's noticeable. But I really miss the AMOLED display and the camera... Those where the best thing ever...
I own a Lumia 830, and I am quite satisfied with it. I take a ton of pictures with it, especially photos with lots of focal points. I'd love to have the 1020's camera but I also don't want to sacrifice performance and design.
I actually really like charging port on top. Its almost always out of the way for me, and it's super easy to plug it in while sitting in a stand on a desk. Next best position is on the top part of the side, and the worst it on the bottom for me.
Why is everybody complaining about LCD display? Actually for a smartphone in which the biggest key is photography, LCD is the BEST display, not amoled. Yes, blacks are awesome over AMOLED, but... milky whites? hell no, just compare the whites, IPS LCD whites are a LOT whiter, brighter and "cold" than the yellowish and WARM whites of AMOLED displays
do you keep your photos inside your phone? 830 is great, I used the 820 until some days ago. But LCD display does not make the cam better, so 1020 is still number one smartphone for photography of all plattforms. you can wait for 1030 or 1040 but even if the successor of the 1020 gets a pure view cam with the same or even more power it will cost more than double of the 1020. so if you only have money for a middle class smartphone, 1020 ist the best choice.
umm bro, 820 has an amoled display.... similiar to the one found on 925 and 1020 edit-unless your point was about 1020 vs 830 and you already knew about it(820 amoled)
Chris Sedlmair 1020 is one of the greatest smartphones for photography, but it didn't have a good screen for photography AT ALL, actually its color accuracy is poor, always with "warm" colors
I quite disagree!! LCD is better for some things such as battery life, more natural colours, doesnt hurt the eyes etc Amoled is better to view photos on thanks to the colour reproduction which is both good and bad, amoled has richer blacks as for samsung, their Amoled displays are massively oversaturated and unnatural, even more than amoleds on other brands this coming from someone who switched from Note 2 to a Lumia 720 with an 820 and a Nexus 5 as backup phones Amoled vs LCD is purely a matter of situation, usage and preference ,none of them are crap
use camera grip for extra juice of battery if you're using camera heavily. That's the purpose of camera grip beside feeling like you hold a true camera.
Waiting for a new 1020 that would be my upgrade. Probably with snapdragon 810 same 41 megapixel camera( same features as 1020), 3g ram and 32g storage with expandable storage!
I bought a Lumia 1020 but then got an invite for Oneplus One, so because I am also an existing Android user, the familiar OS and newer hardware is difficult to pass on. I will miss the camera and the FM radio... and I'll not miss everything else.
Windows better get there finger out soon with a flagship. It's not that popular the now, taking your time with a flagship will not do them any favours. Sold my 1020 but that is definitely the winner in the comparison. Michael Fishers Reviews are the best you'll find on UA-cam. He's my first choice all the time, and when I click on a video I'm like "please be a Michael Fisher Review!" And if it's not I cope but usually disappointed. Excellent Review as always Mr Fisher.
I'm starting to get sick of Lumia's. I had a 920, which was great for two years, despite the fact that the volume down button stopped working two months after I got the phone. Then I purchased a 1520 (last years). Then, about 6 months after owning it, the volume down button stopped working. Two weeks ago, the camera button stopped working, and then a day or two after that, after about 3-5 minutes of use, the screen would glitch out, then the phone would shut off and be unusable. So, I just went out and bought an 830 yesterday at around 1:00 pm. When I got home, at around 7:00pm - only 6 hours later, I come to find the rear speaker on my phone has stopped working completely. If I get one more shitty Lumia phone when I replace this 830, I'm completely giving up on the company.
It makes perfect sense. You are just a Lumia hater. You started throwing all kinds of phones into the ring telling that they had problems. It's is really unlikely that a high end Nokia phone has problems with the buttons. I also had lots of Lumia phones and I never had any issues with any of them.
IOrDaCH33 I wasn't making it up, and I'm certainly not a hater. Like I said, I prefer Nokia Lumia's, I just had trouble with my passed two. My 920 was the most reliable one I had, never giving me issues but the volume rocker. I just got my broken 830 replaced with a new one under warranty last night, and it's working fine so far.
BloodstainedSinner LOL With the volume update that came with the Nokia Cyan update.. the volume rocker not working shouldn't have been a problem since you can operate the volume with sliders on the touch screen.
Muyanzi Reid It was annoying none the less. Having to go too the home screen then pull down the sliders just to adjust volume was annoying. I should have been able to use the volume rocker.
I felt they should have put a snapdragon 425 rather than 400 in the Nokia Lumia 830 then the mid-range flagship title would go unchallenged in my regard
WindowsPhone needs a new flagship. Every time I think I want to bye a Windowsphon Microsoft and or problems with aps or something els talk me out out of it. I can see unlimited possibilities with Windowsphon. They need to make us excited for the platform again. It's hard to get excited for a mid range phone.
HTC one yes but like I seed above the camera is not good enough for my needs. The Icon is closer to be a year old. How many different flagships are released from Android companies in a year's time? Now how many have been released by WindowsPhone 2 maybe 3. I am NOT saying that WindowsPhone needs to release as many phones as Android. However what it is releases now is not sufficient to keep the interest in the platform.
Marty Anderson I completely agree. Im guessing MS is still finding out the right strategy for windows phone. I also think they are waiting for w10. They've been bringing out some pretty nifty things nowadays and I bet the next flagship wp (due in may) is gonna make this agonizing wait well worth it.
Lumia 1020 got the denim and it's getting the Windows 10.... The guy from pocketnow wants to show how much the 830 is better, we'll in fact the 1020 is as good as 830 but it misses SD card slot and removable back cover and battery and smaller 4.5" display AMOLED with glance screen support ... In performance are quiet the same but he didn't mention the 2 GB of RAM in 1020 and 1GB only in 830... The Windows 10 needs much RAM which means the 1020 will be good here, there is also 64 GB version of 1020, the real problem is the battery which according to other users it doesn't last for long = you'll need a big powerbank
Sebastian Kassem I have owned both and I can tell you that the RAM only matters in games. The performance of the 830 its truly better. Also the 64GB version of the 1020 its kind of hard to get. And I DONT FUCKING KNOW WHY but the 830's battery last longer ._. But yeah... I miss the camara and the AMOLED display... A lot... But love the biger screen and faster camara.
***** cause Cortex A7 needs less power than Krait in 1020... RAM will matter on Windows 10 cause the 512Mb will be having some kind of troubles running it, 1GB will the minimum of smooth running, 64GB it was in large numbers here just couple of weeks ago, now it's a big sale days for the 1020 cassette the prices what down so much , something is coming July
you can do studio photography with the 1020. slave a speed light to the xenon flash on the 1020. there's a video with nokia doing that, and i've tried it. it's pretty cool. no other smart phone can do that.
What was high-end 2 years ago is mid-end or higher low-end today, in some aspects my ex-girlfriend's Microsoft Lumia 535 is better than my Nokia Lumia 920, despite the latter being an award-winning Phone named and motto'd ''the world's most innovative phone'' back in 2012, and having been praised for its high hardware specs, today it barely stands out in the Nokia/Microsoft Lumia line of phones, though the main reason I still stay is because Microsoft is yet to release a next generation flagship device with 64 G.B. flash support from the get-go.
Alex Holis With my recent parrels with two brand-new Lumia's, I would tell you to buy an older 920 (still perfectly functional, hardly any different). That was the *only* Lumia I had that functioned correctly.
The SOC of the 830 is a fucking joke. The CPU is not that much (in fact, is inferior in a lot of tests) better than the Snapdragon S4 of my Lumia 920 (same as 1020) due to the inferior architecture used (Krait>>>>>>>>>Cortex-A7) and the GPU is inferior despite of the lower number (Adreno 225>>>Adreno 305). How I know?. Cause the Adreno 305 was on the Lumias 720 and inferior. Even the 720 has a Krait CPU (is a 1Ghz dual core, but still), and this thing doesn't, what a shame. They should've used the Snapdragon 600 (Krait 300+ second gen. Adreno 320, which is 3 times faster than Adreno 225), so the gap wouldn't be SO FUCKING HUGE between the 930 (Krait 400 and Adreno 330, which is like 40% faster than Adreno 320) and the 830... The 830 is pretty much a sidegrade for 920-925 (the screen resolution of these ones is higher too ^^) or even 820 (same SOC as my 920) owners and a downgrade from the 1020. The 930 is the only replacement, and that thing has pentile garbage on the screen... + the awful company that sells Lumia now (Nokia>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Microshit), so no thanks.
Definetely 830, only thing 1020 is better at, if you ask me is the camera, and when I used both phones on the same shots in the same light, are not TOO different, also the bigger screen, is the way to go, and in the near future the 1020 will just be another one of those phones that only exceeded on one aspect. The camera, and even the camera is not THAT much better.
Bollocks. I own lumia 920, had 830 for one day and gave it back to the store. Lumia 830 os inferior to 920 in every possible aspect. Display is crap, lacks sharpness of old 920. Camera is crap, amount od noise os unacceptable. Back cover fitting over the camera is awful.
+aleksa ssta well, it looks nice and I do like it but, developers don't really make apps for it. If devs showed some live for windows I'd definitely go back to my Nokia 1020.
Yeah, but then, it's not the OS, it's developers. It's actually MS stepping late into the game. Well, I hope Windows 10 mobile with universal apps to fix app gap :-)
Great job Mike, as always a fantastic job and loved the "scan" affect that was excellent work. You by far have the best reviews on YT. Keep up the good work
A channel which they consider WP as lovable platform. Kudos Pocketnow
I like how Michael act in 4:02 ..looks so convincing
Who knows ;) Maybe he was really talking on the phone! haha.
KentSpain85
switching phones like that is definitely not real lol
I wonder what he was saying... :P
DOGE™ he was saying "doge please" :P :D
Mike is a well established stage actor & writer too,
You should read his bio in pocketnow website :)
The quality of your videos is the best, keep up the great work, PN!
Michael's ability of faking calls is trully amazing. I just notice it NOW.
Alot of work you have put in to this video . I can see that. So good job man
IMO my yellow 1020 still is the best camera phone on the market. It's my dream smartphone and I would not replace it to any other smartphone!
hows now
I am so sad Windows Phone didn’t make it, looks really nice!
How did you do that scanning back of phone and revealing its components., Nice editing 👌
Thanks! That's a combination of a stock effect in Final Cut Pro and some very careful phone placement. ^M
Michael the god damn editing is SUPERB on this video. Or may be they have been always.
Thanks Michael, this comparison solidify me from not ditching this old phone to another for the sake of the camera. Though my complaints is on the color over saturation of photos and less less (mock-ups) genuine apps available on windows app store.
Don't worry Micheal. Lumia Camera 5.0 will come to the 1020 (and most windows phones) with windows 10.
Exactly the comparison I was looking for, thanks Pocketnow!
I didn't realize how much bigger the 1020 camera is
Michael, Your videos are just something else..good job again!
The only reason why I'd buy a 830 over a 1020 because the 830 has a SD card and the 1020 doesnt
That's true 😀😀
it doesn't matter. the internal storage is enough. but if it is not, you can use a micro-usb/otg adapter to read/write micro sd card memory as an external storage. like meenova, leef access, etc.

Alan Harake it doesn't mean 1020 doesn't, there is a solution for it.. .

Cosmic Console r u still using it
ahmad nazaruddin Well I have a Lumia 650 as my daily driver now, but I still use my 830 for Windows Insider builds
Lumia 830 is $300 at amazon now, at leas tin black or white back covers. Pretty great.
Actually Lumia 1020 might not be stuck for ever on Nokia Camera, Rumours claims that Windows 10 will bring Lumia Camera 5 to all Windows Phones.
@Marty Anderson a Lumia 1020 user here. Even after a year and half I don't feel my phone is inadequate
I've got a Lumia 830 and I like this phone. The Lumia is very good too. But the Lumia 1020 I more expensive than 830. :-)
When the video started, I was like, "The voice sounds very familiaarrrrrrrrr.." DEYM! It's the Tech Dapper Guy, Mr. Michael Fisher
Nokia Lumia 1020 is so amazing!
Sure!
Yes I do.
MICHAEL.........YOU ARE THE BEST
Good comparison Captain!
i own both and use both as per the photography........ normal close ones with 830...... long and distant with 1020
I actually really like charging port on top. Its almost always out of the way for me, and it's super easy to plug it in while sitting in a stand on a desk. Next best position is on the top part of the side, and the worst it on the bottom for me.
Pocketnow you are AWESOME 🙆 Thanks alot,, as always it's a nice video.

doesn't the 1020 still have more megapixels than any phone, not just windows phones?
juffurey True
juffurey He said "major smartphone platform" which doesn't include Nokia 808 Pureview (Symbian, 41MPx)
I really like 1020 from everywhere from it looks, just the battery capacity wasn't enough while I having heavy usage of camera.
use camera grip for extra juice of battery if you're using camera heavily. That's the purpose of camera grip beside feeling like you hold a true camera.
Am I the only one who thinks that the 830 isnt really a 1020 successor? Even if Microsoft pretends it is, they went for a much more standard device
it isn't a successor. wth are you talking about?
it isn't officially, they are coming out with with a "1030" or equivalent this summer.
It has never been a 1020 successor. Duh.
people just said it was because it has a big black round plate at the back. no other reason.
Give us a 2015 version of the Lumia 1020!
I find reviews and comparisons of pocketnow most neutral as compared to other sites. 👍
Waiting for a new 1020 that would be my upgrade. Probably with snapdragon 810 same 41 megapixel camera( same features as 1020), 3g ram and 32g storage with expandable storage!
Is it just me or does the 830 have much better low light performance in these pics?
I bought a Lumia 1020 but then got an invite for Oneplus One, so because I am also an existing Android user, the familiar OS and newer hardware is difficult to pass on. I will miss the camera and the FM radio... and I'll not miss everything else.
The 1020 is being held down by 2012 tech but the camera is still great. The 830 has too many compromises.
I love my Lumia 1020!!!!
Love my L 1020 even in the days of Android and iOS 😂
Good video, very informative.
I would kill for the Lumia 1020 to be redone with a QHD display, a better processor and a little less of a camera hump.
My favorite reviewer

@Karly Johnston I have Denim on my budget Lumia 530.
"1020 is the only flagship shooter in the Windows Phone range" ---Umm, my 1520 has a 20MP camera and it is brilliant
Cómo haces para ordenar de esa manera las Apps? En la parte derecha se ve muy bien.
@SantEurosia
Because never supposed to be the successor!! Just a good affordable phone!. I am waiting for the real successor!
the picture at 6:10 looks much better on the 830.
I felt they should have put a snapdragon 425 rather than 400 in the Nokia Lumia 830 then the mid-range flagship title would go unchallenged in my regard
Explain the wonderful and fun as usual
WindowsPhone needs a new flagship. Every time I think I want to bye a Windowsphon Microsoft and or problems with aps or something els talk me out out of it. HTC one W8
Not son enough pluck. How old is the icon akk 930? NTDang I want a better camer then what the HTC ONE M8 for Windows office.
Marty Anderson those phones are less than one year old.

can you make review z2 vs 1020
i had z2 and want know wich best in cam
Mikey! Cure that damn cold...
*****, my lumia 1020 is running Windows 8.1 denim. No developer account and it's on at&t
Subbed because of WP friendliness..
How about the Lumia 1020 vs. the iPhone 6? Everyone claims that the iPhone 6 is the best smartphone camera.
by everyone, you mean people who have never used a 1020.
sultanabran1 Yeah that's what I meant, my apologies ;)
Why did Windows Phone have to die? It actually looks really nice and I would have loved a Microsoft-powered phone!
I love my lumia 830 Black
Hope my 1020 get denim update soon
having a look at the photos, I see no real advantage in the 1020. Hopefully there will be a 1030 :)
it isn't just about the quality of photos, its the features those extra pixels can provide, like "lossless" zoom, and reframing.
but sometimes the photos from the 830 are sharper. better less pixels, that are sharp than a lot that are smudgy
you can do studio photography with the 1020. slave a speed light to the xenon flash on the 1020. there's a video with nokia doing that, and i've tried it. it's pretty cool. no other smart phone can do that.

I want that wallpaper !!!
@Apourv Patinge I believe its Kindle.
Please compare Nokia Lumia 830 to Nokia Lumia 925!!!
Luv Patel PLEEEEEESE! D:
Yea ! I can't chose between them
Chose the 830. I'll love it.
Only super shooter in Windows phone? More like at all!! I miss my 1020 So much

Better yet. Don't buy either. 930 is the way to go lol.
if the 930 has a xenon flash, i would've bought it.
When windows phone 10 launch for Lumia
Today I am gonna buy Lumia 1020 at $40 .....Is worth it?
Yes as a collectables
is the s4 better than the 400?
I don't think so.
Which phone is better?(Nokia lumia 1020 or 830)

+ the awful company that sells Lumia now (Nokia>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Microshit), so no thanks.
and also the 1020 freezing issues ~
Are you Tony stark?
830 is s beast
I have a nokia 830 black
After so many years Nokia 808 Pureview will beat both of them.
#All Hail to Nokia 808 Pureview
great review, but terrible asphalt player
Black is boring. Class flagship back then
I would love to win a new phone
lumia 1020 still the king
Faking annoying using windows phone...maybe becoz the app
I only hear bla bla bla wile i watch the awesome phones
I love these phones, but i hate the os.
+TheRealCali The OS is da best
+aleksa ssta well, it looks nice and I do like it but, developers don't really make apps for it. If devs showed some live for windows I'd definitely go back to my Nokia 1020.
Yeah, but then, it's not the OS, it's developers. It's actually MS stepping late into the game. Well, I hope Windows 10 mobile with universal apps to fix app gap :-)
+aleksa ssta true
