Guy and Rick, a message to the person who talked about his lad with anxiety and serious 1st tee nerves. My, then 11 year old, daughter got me into golf about a year before COVID became trendy. We started at the pitch and putt course with 3 clubs each, and then as we built up more of a set, we decided to try a really short 18 hole course. My daughter also has anxiety. As we approached our tee time, we could see the people behind us also waiting. They were going to see our first ever tee shots. My daughter started crying and said she wanted to go home. I tried to reassure her, saying we'd soon be out of sight. There were four men ahead of us about to tee off, so we stopped talking. Three of them hit balls in the right direction. The fourth toed the ball high and right. It hit a tree about 10 yards to the right of the tee box and bounced high over our heads and landed on the front edge of the car park. Luckily, no one was hit. I said to my daughter, "will you do better than that?" She nodded. She did, and we played 18 holes ... quite badly. Nevertheless, the lesson was that the people watching you have likely hit worse shots than your bad shot, at sometime in their lives. Even if they're good now. We still don't like being watched but at least we play every week and care less about those around us. I hope that helps your other listener.
‘Before COVID was trendy’ lol. Love the framing on that… perfect. On your daughter, most golfers in my experience are so self involved in their own game, swing etc, they only notice the great shots. They expect bad ones. Anxiety is a problem for more intelligent people and I would guess your daughter probably is going off your comment. Just remember bravery is not the absence of nerves but doing it despite them.
@@rickggrick778 no, thank you for being a beacon of hope in this world, with good people bringing children into this world. There is no greater gift than that of life.
16:34 I will say, that when I'm watching these longer Break 75s I'll usually watch them right when I'm done with work (5:00pm Chicago time) and because they're released on Friday's I'll have a beer with them, then when the wife gets home I'll have to finish it on either Saturday or Sunday. Rick Shiels' Break 75 is one of the most cathartic series on UA-cam.
Just my first time listening to this podcast. Don't usually enjoy talk fests as I prefer to watch golf being played. However I really enjoyed you and Guy chatting away, so now I will put your podcast on my must listen/ watch list.
Was at the Dell on Sunday, such a great event and day. Just saying there were more following the Consolation match with Rory and Scottie then the final.
Welcome to my hometown. I always loved going to The Masters when I was growing up. It was a family tradition that I have been fortunate to share with my sons.
Facts lol. Love Rick but he always seems to lump all of the US into having weather like Florida or California. Northern USA winters are way worse than British/most of Europe’s winters. Courses aren’t even open it’s that bad.
what a great podcast! Thanks Guy for interacting with the FB group too! good luck in Augusta Rick, you'll do great! After watching the Sir Nick interview, I think you should talk about and drop clips of your early video days!
Great content again. I have to say that having a shorter driver is helping me big time. I started playing again after many years away. I got some newer clubs and played but always struggled with the driver (constantly slicing it). I found my old driver its over 20 years old and tried it and I am hitting it further and straighter. The old driver is two inches shorter. So I am going for a fitting this weekend. So looking forward to the Masters
very great podcast. You guys just keep getting better and better. Im a plus 20 handicap with a pga professional best friend who got me and my son into golf. Your content is so incredible and priceless to guys like me on the come up and recently caught the bug. You both are great. I love the back and forth between you and GUY. Also Guy congrats on the baby, as a father of two boys I am excited for you to enjoy this time with your new young family. Keep it up boys. Checking in from South Florida!
You are going to break the internet with that round of golf it seems, I will stay tuned to see what you got Rick... haha and I do agree with the ball rollbacks for the professional game, fewer wedges into Par 4s the better in my opinion. Rory shouldn't be driving a 390-yard hole on the fly, and even Rory agrees with it.
Matchplay is much better if you have time to focus on each pairing. I love going back and watching the Shell golfing series from back in the day. Some great stuff.
I have to admit that when I first started listening to these podcasts, I didn't find Guy to be all that likeable. However, lately more and more, I find myself agreeing with him more on things and seeing that he is becoming much more comfortable speaking his mind. Keep up the great work.
Will look forward to possibly seeing you out there. I will be there the 2nd-7th of Masters week. I work for a traffic data collection company and we are hired by Augusta National every year to do studies on the patrons for improvements on admission gates, concession lines, golfshop queues, and many other things on or around the property. Safe travels.
Watched sir nicks podcast this morning and it was nice to see you on the other side answering qs for a change. I also enjoyed you on golf life many moons ago - you are visually more relaxed/different to what we’re used to and it’s entertaining.
Hope to see you there during the Masters.. I'll be there on Thursday and Friday... And like you Rick.. if I am getting what you're hinting, then welcome to a special and extremely small group that only few of us are a part of.. the experience of playing the course is a very special one.
“Hard cold winter” indeed. It is still snowing in my part of Canada and today was a balmy -1 degree C. But we will be golfing soon. Thankful for simulators, for sure.
Enjoy Rick. A friend of mine played it on the Sunday (same day as drive chip and putt) before the masters last year. Said it was INCREDIBLE. Life time goal, enjoy
I went to the US Open in 1987 and watched Payne Stewart sky a drive...it went about 100 yards. I also saw Bob Tway hit one of those diving, smothered pull hooks off the tee (my favorite shot). You see a lot more bad shots when you attend live events! 😄
Agree on guys friend, I love the videos but sometimes I can’t watch the whole thing through so I need to wait for another time to finish and sometimes I end up forgetting until a few weeks later.
Hey Rick, huge fan of the channel! I will be working at the Masters in the main Concession Stand and would love to see you come through there! it would be an honor to meet you!
Your discussion about playing to your handicap has been a taking point for several years. I had some golfing mates who expected to shoot their handicap all the time whereas the real expectation was to shoot or beat your handicap once every 8-10 rounds.
If think logically....your handicap is average of best 8 of last 20 rounds....so already thrown out worst 12/20, 60%. So left with best 40% of rounds ... BUT it's a average of these...so out of those 8 rounds you'd expect 4 above average and 4 below average by definition of average....with average being the handicap... So actually should expect to only break handicap in 4 rounds out of 20 .... So 20% of the time (1 round in 5)!
Loved your chat with Sir Nick and you were talking about potential ideas. You actually mentioned one. Do a tour of municipal clubs and put them on the map to encourage new local players looking to dabble. Could potentially raise revenues for the struggling clubs 🤷♂️. Keep up the great work.
@Nate Edwardson Golf called this, good on ya Nate! And congrats Rick for playing the holy grail of golf courses! Cant wait to see a Break 90 at Augusta National 😂
Hi Rick as for your marathon don't worry too much I did the Sheffield half marathon a few years ago very hilly hardly any training injury 3 weeks before and it popped 1 mile in again did it in 2.32 and don't be afraid to be on the sauce the night before worked for me 😂😂
I got lucky with getting tickets this year for the Masters! I got Monday practice round tickets, so maybe we won't cross paths, but I'll be looking for you😄
Can't believe I was at this Bongos and didn't see you there mate! You mustn't have went the bar because my table was right by it and I would have seen you 😂😂
To all those who have a child or friend or other who are starting out, it is quite true that the nerves may never go away BUT, your ability to tackle those nerves and overcome them will only get bigger, stronger, more powerful and you will overcome. The example of Tiger is perfect because even with that talent the nerves were still there but, the ability to overcome was so strong. Golf can mirror life and, the skills used to overcome those first tee nerves can be used in any situation. A change of perspective might be useful, those feelings of heart pumping hard, palms getting sweaty, breathing getting fast, those are the same for excitement! Its exciting being on the first tee, the whole round ahead of you! To help you with that you can also do what a lot of us do and imagine! Imagine you are on the first tee of the Old Course. Yes we do do that and don't try to deny it!! Practice does help immensely because being able to make the club head connect with ball with regularity will only lead to a better outcome. I liked what Guy had to say about the difference between looking and watching. All those looking on are thinking the same - I hope I hit it straight! - they are as nervous as you.

Love it! Rick vs Augusta! I’ll take Fitzpatrick at The Masters - became a fan when he won the US amateur at Brookline - I lived 20 minutes from there and was too much of a lazy hump to drive over. Did see Strange and Faldo on Sunday in ‘88 tho
Did Rick secure one of those coveted Monday Augusta tee times for the Media?? From the tips Mr Shiels!! I’m a 2:45 marathoner (at age 46)- run walk 10k will devolve on the 2nd half to all walk. Better strategy to trick your legs for 1 day- is run 2 mi, walk 1 mile 1st half and run 1 mi walk 1 mi 2nd half. I can’t wait to hear the race report on this!
Interesting talk about club length. Been using soly taylormade for the last 15 years. Had paridym, g430 snd others. I was always hitting bottom 20% of the club face. Hit the stealth and stealth 2 and was dead centre of the face.
You mentioned David Duval!!! I Loved watching that guy. Can you imagine how many tournaments he would have taken from lefty if he'd stayed healthy and kept playing??

CANNOT WAIT for the Rick@Augusta break 75?!?! Rick...I'm sure you've received lots of comments about the finger - happened to me as well - looks like a boutonniere deformity and should be addressed (mine were casted for 6 weeks and "bent" back successful). Cheers!
any plans for doing course revisits on break 75 of courses where you didn't break 75 you may have done some in past. I'd be curious to see how seeing a course a second time improves the game
I get the feeling that Rick is going to play Augusta National! The fact that he and Sir Nick Faldo had the interview recently is a good indication that he will get to play a round or two with Sir Nick at Augusta!
Hi Rick (& followers), I will be going away on a golfing holiday in a month with three of my friends. There is a large disparity between all four of our playing handicaps. Our handicaps are as follows: Scratch, 18, 22 and 36/38. Is there any fourball formats which you would recommend to keep us all engaged and don’t make the 36/38 handicapper feel irrelevant for the round of golf e.g. playing best ball. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Great podcast guys. Regarding your finger, Rick (I believe it is Depuytren's contracture). I was able to continue to play golf comfortably (left hand pinkie for me) up until I had surgery (when my finger was so bent, I struggled to put my hand through a long sleeve shirt). However, if you want to see what happens with no surgery, check out Bill Nighy's hands............just saying! I had my surgery a few years back in December and was back playing in the Spring. There may also be non-surgical treatments but don't know enough about those to comment. It is way more common than you think!
Rick if you ever get out to the West Coast and California to play Pebble Beach, might I suggest a side trip to Northwood in the heart of the Russian River district. This 9-hole golf course is also designed by Alistair Mackenzie. He built it while working on Pebble. Locals call it Knockwood for all the Redwood trees golfers hit with their shots. Good luck you will need it.
Would love to see another podcast or on course video with Tubes and Ange golf life now they have bullard on there aswell. Them vs you and guy scramble but get you boys down south at a venue of their choice would be great to watch, maybe with a few shots to play with.
Has a winter specific ball ever been produced? Surely lower temperatures affect the dynamic behavior of a golf ball and its interaction with a club face. Any plastic-like material used as a cover and whatever is used in the core would have less give in cold conditions, compressing less and going shorter distances.
For the simulator.. You can link your phone straight to a projector with chrome cast and its really cheap so you can project onto a screen straight infront of you fir really cheap
For the UA-cam Masters, you should have a qualifier for some of the lesser known channels. Have one in the US and one in the UK, and if you don't get the invite, you could potentially qualify to play.
Hey Rick, augusta region local here, while your down this way and want to play a very nice hidden gem I recommend Pine Ridge country club or Persimmon Hill.
I loved that scramble video, the whole thing! Yes, I like the lesson vids to be short and sweet as you have done, but the playing vids, Break 75, How I Play Golf, etc., I enjoy the length. Well done, Lads. Speaking of guests, why not have some average run-of-the-mill rumjum golfers on that a) are knowledgeable, b) other average golfers can relate to, c) love the game, and d) are just ordinary, but charismatic folks? I live in Vietnam, am 64 yrs old, been playing all my life with, sadly, long periods of time where I couldn't, but am currently teaching 2 young lads. Asia is shit for facilities for young people - it's all geared to wealthy businesspeople. It needs fostering of youth golf programs!
Haha good luck running a marathon off of no training Rick…. I suspect you might end up walking more than you run, however I love the charity you are supporting so kudos to you for giving it a go.
Rick, my son has exactly the same little finger shape as yours, which he was born with and although he had splints and exercises as a kid it never did any good whatsoever. It’s part of you and him so embrace it. Love your work.
I actually disagree on the Rory/Scottie final. I was rooting for these young guys, up-and-coming superstars, to duke it out in the final. Wish the final had been a better match but as Cam Young said, he didn’t play poorly, Burns just played insanely well. The semi-final matchups were also amazing to watch.
Guy is spot on about handicaps. All amateurs have a tendency to judge themselves against their very best and get annoyed when they fail to hit those heights. I play off 7 and probably achieve that score about one time out of eight. It’s really annoying but that’s also the beauty of the game.

CANNOT WAIT for the Rick@Augusta break 75?!?! Rick...I'm sure you've received lots of comments about the finger - happened to me as well - looks like a boutonniere deformity and should be addressed (mine were casted for 6 weeks and "bent" back successful). Cheers!
Rick , I will be at the Masters Wednesday thru Sunday,, Hope to see you there.
Rick it was the Highlight of my Day meeting you yesterday at The Masters.
Is Rick going to get to play Augusta?? That would be absolutely incredible
You’re the man Rick! Love what you’re doing man
Great news Rick you'll have an amazing time. Fab podcast yet again but just one concern. What the hell is a foot tap lol lol
any plans for doing course revisits on break 75 of courses where you didn't break 75
you may have done some in past.
I can definately feel a practice round at the holy grail with a certain SIR coming on Rick cant wait , enjoy rick , I am sure we all will too.
You cheeky bastard. Callaway really hooked you up to play Augusta on Monday!!
Hell yeah ill be there Friday, id love to play a round with you! Augusta native
Would love to see another podcast or on course video with Tubes and Ange golf life now they have bullard on there aswell. Them vs you and guy scramble but get you boys down south at a venue of their choice would be great to watch, maybe with a few shots to play with.
Some real Hounds of the Baskervilles weather. Were you at the Moors National?
Has a winter specific ball ever been produced? Surely lower temperatures affect the dynamic behavior of a golf ball and its interaction with a club face. Any plastic-like material used as a cover and whatever is used in the core would have less give in cold conditions, compressing less and going shorter distances.
I hope you get to bump into Jon of Stacked Golf at Augusta.
Augusta here we come! 🤙
I'll see you there next week!!
Knew that it would be Augusta. Guy, what brand is the top you are wearing. It doesn't appear to be Lyle and Scott.
I'll be at the par 3 contest as well, If you need a 4th on the course im in .
Best match play event ever was the World Matchplay that took used to take place in Wentworth in October.
Superb. Have a great time Rick.........On another note my daughter likes Bongo Bingo too.
Enjoy man that s going to be awesome and probably everyone s dream
