It's ONE of the best...I LOVED it when I saw it for the VERY first time in the FIRST year...sorry, for ALL of the CAP words...I CAN'T help myself, er ah...
The show was the best with Shelley Long. Also, too bad Kelsey Grammer wasn't there. He owes his career to being on Cheers. Long was kind of a loon and she was hard to work with, but she helped make the show be a huge hit, and the show made her.
I am European, but I have to say that "Cheers" is the best American sitcom ever produced. I do not think it is one of the best, but the best. It is full of intelligent humour and ideas, and I cannot describe it enough. Cheers was a programme that I had to watch.

I just watched this and got choked up. I stopped watching TV years ago but I used to be a TV addict. Sometimes it really got out of hand, one just got so absorbed into that TV world. One of my favorite shows was this one. I recall in 1988 I had a terrible car accident, my mouth was wired up and I was basically confined to my room for quite some time. Cheers was on syndication in NY airing twice a day. I watched it both times. The same thing was done in Philadelphia and I was able to get the UHF signal on my TV. And on Tuesday NBC aired a new episode. So every Tuesday it was 5 episodes of Cheers for me. I just invested in all those characters and that world they lived in. I forgot about that. Nice to see we all grew up.
I love Cheers! I still watch it over and over again, I never get tired of it. Watching Cheers one feels as though they are just sitting around with friends. It is the best sitcom ever.

supercooled Americans in general looked better back then. Today we are a bunch of obese pigs which our fast food culture has caught up to us. I moved to Germany, which also known for fatty food, and lost 40lbs. Today we cook and try to eat as little processed foods as possible.
Jefff That is true. I forgot about how different life styles were back then simply because as you said, the culture has just caught up to us and it's been replaced with instant gratification and people are no longer familiar with hard work for their rewards.
Was with deep sadness when it went off the air many years ago, just brilliantly crafted, unforgettable characters and great entertainment. Get sad just thinking about it and the classic opening music set you for what you knew would be a special experience.

Cheers actually got better after Diane left and that drop-dead gorgeous bombshell Rebecca came along. Shelley Long left the series and thought the show would die without her, when in fact it turned out to become even better!
I agree, when Shelley Long left the show, in came Kirstie Alley and the rest was history, the series was still in the Nielsen Ratings Top 5 as a matter of fact, the 9th Season of Cheers became THE #1 Show of the 90/91 Season and it knocked off both The Cosby Show and Roseanne out of the #1 spot and even during the Final Season, the series was in the Nielsen Ratings Top 10 and it also ended on a happy note I personally, like the Rebecca Howe Years better than the Diane Chambers Years, certainly no disrespect to Shelley Long who is a phenomenal actress, but Kirstie Alley's character of Rebecca Howe was more serious/no nonsense/in your face type persona and that's what I liked about her character Kirstie Alley's role of Rebecca helped take the show to #1 during it's 9th season which was something that Shelley Long has never done
3:30 NO this show and the rest just like it from times of old do not 'stand up' to television of today... it is on TOP of and destroys television of today. Damn it.
My favourite TV shows still to this day and I'm watching season 5 episode 11 right now but I've never watched the last episode as i was gutted that they took it off the air.
I'm glad they mentioned Grant Tinker. He decided, all by himself, to keep the show on after the first season. It was in last place amongst all the prime time shows for that season. But in the second season the ratings started to improve.
Wasn't it Coach who said something about passing out is kind of like a little break you get in the day and you should more or less enjoy it? Coach was my favorite and they did an excellent job with bringing in Woody. Woody Harrelson is one heck of an actor. Great show.
I was in my early 20's when the show was on, and I had a real crush on Shelley Long. I'd occasionally meet my best friend at his job when he got off from work, and the secretary there looked just like Long. It was uncomfortable for me to wait in the office for even a few minutes till he clocked out. She was older, married, hot as can be, and looked at me like a dried up booger.
The best American sitcom ever. Nice characters, sublime dialogues, funny quips and a high 'feel good' factor. So much better than the self-conscious, smug, egocentric 'look-how-funny-I-am! 'Friends'.
Damn, Bebe Neuwirth still looks amazing. Glad to hear she's on Broadway - I miss seeing her on TV (last thing I saw her in was the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode where she played the kinky alien nurse).
I love Neuwirth's a consistent throughout the three 'Cheers canon' shows alongside Grammer. I actually find it a shame she doesn't do animation roles more often, especially since she does more vocal range than Grammer and Ratzenberger who tend to just do caricatures of their Cheers personas (as much as I love Sideshow Bob and Hamm :P). Almost none of Neuwirth's voice roles sound anything like Lillith. Perlman also had a role in Sing a few years ago that is nothing like her Carla.
Pretty well known that Shelley didn't get along too well with quite a few of the cast. She subsequently made up with Ted and Kelsey, hence her appearances in Frasier, but not with Rhea who still refuses to talk about her. Also I liked the fact that they hung the Geronimo pic behind them....a link to Coach.
fredmciverslovechild Kelsey was a big drunk and a good actor. Off the set he just mumbles and didn't get involved in any conversation. While Shelley was a person who wanted to be perfectly prepared on the set, Kelsey had a more let's-see-what-happens working method and according to Cheers writer Ken Levine it did work for the character Frasier. So it's no surprise it lead to annoyance and frustration between the two.
