The story behind this album was that it was mostly written about themselves. The members were in the midst of break ups with each other and many of the lyrics are actually aimed at each other. It’s a measure of their professionalism that they could still go out and perform the songs despite some of the lyrics being quite vicious or proclaiming their love for other people outside their relationships.

When I'm feeling low I think of the bass line of "You Make Loving Fun," because no matter how bad things get, I'll never have to perform in a love song my wife wrote for another man. I mean, Jesus...
And, yeah, beyond all that interpersonal drama, there were also mountains of cocaine involved.

Buckingham had some of the singing parts on some of the songs (like McVie's) recorded separately to keep tensions from erupting.

    • @TheRatsCast

And that's the thing; isn't it, the rumors surrounding the band at the time. Both couples were in the midst of a break up: mainly due to Infidelity within the band. Nicks slept with Fleetwood, Buckingham slept with Christine McVie. Mick Fleetwood got a divorce because of it all. Tensions were high, and the songs reflect the band at any moment in time. The chain that kept them together was the band, and their next album. So while Buckingham was singing to Nick; this was a song the whole band was contacted too, as it had everyone on mind. You really need to listen to the whole album

Fleetwood Mac had been around for years before Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined. That band lineup took Fleetwood Mac to a whole new level. Rumours was the 2nd Fleetwood Mac album with Nicks and Buckingham.

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac " were a superb Blues Group who had a few hit singles in the late 1960's,featuring one of the World's legends that was Peter Green. There were also 2 other fine guitarists in Irishman: Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer so an All British and Irish Group. " Albatriss" is still one of ny 2 favourite songs of all time but MUST be listened for 3 minutes in the dark, with headphones,in solitude. It's beautiful. Anyway LSD ruined Peter. Danny became a drunk and Jeremy joined a Californian Cult all around 1970 so the Band mde the transition to become a Transatlantic Band around 1971 and the rest is history. :) Peter and Danny recently died.

    • @HollowGolem

Their early albums were much more British-blues fare, featuring Peter Green. And you've probably heard covers of at least two of those early songs ("Black Magic Woman," covered by Santana, and "The Green Manalishi," covered by Judas Priest). "Albatross" is also a lovely early song of theirs. I'm also a fan of the _Bare Trees_ album after Green left (but before Buckingham and Nicks joined).
Fleetwood Mac became big stars with the Buckingham/Nicks albums, but they were no slouches beforehand. That later period just eclipsed their early greatness for posterity.

It never goes old as you can now see for yourself that 45 years later, you can probably hear at least one of it’s songs on the radio or XM if you listened all day! Just like many other group of the 70’s.

      Unique finger-picking style, entirely self-taught.
I remember an interview with Stevie Nicks in which the interviewer pointed out that she was waitressing and supporting herself and Lindsey while he wasn't working. She stopped the interviewer and said no, he was working: he was playing the guitar 10-12 hours per day getting better and better, and she was happy to support him because they were a team. That was the deal they had, and as far as she was concerned, he had lived up to it. (This was long after they has split up a couple.)

Have you heard the album that Lindsay & Stevie put out in 1973 called “Buckingham Nicks”? It’s an incredible album, although it was only ever released on vinyl in ‘73, and for years you had to buy the LP if you could find it. I bought the LP in 1995 at a record store in NYC for $125, which was a lot, but what choice did I have? NOW you can hear the entire album for free on UA-cam! Listen to the song “Frozen Love”, the guitar work is stunning. When Mick Fleetwood heard this song he decided that he had hire Lindsay to join Fleetwood Mac before he even met him. Lindsay said the only way he’s join Fleetwood Mac is if his partner, Stevie, came with him because they were a unit no matter what.

It’s great to watch the episode on the Classic Albums series devoted to Rumours.

Nothing makes a breakup song better than being able to write and play it while staring at the person you're breaking up with. Rumors is full of that and it made it into basically an unintended greatest hits album.
BTW here's a clip of Lindsey showing the song with and without that acoustic guitar part he was talking about that changed the song: ua-cam.com/video/egBB7zhpeQQ/v-deo.html (its about 28 min into the video) way cool!

Remember, it was the '70's. Back before the AIDS and Herpes, etc. scares. Drugs were flowing and people were jumping on top of each other like a bunch of rabbits. Pop stars in particular were always hooking up with other. Even the National Inquirer couldn't keep up. TMZ would have been a 24 hour station back then. But I was a dorky teenager when this song came out. All I could do was watch. Made for a great album though.

Fleetwood Mac started in the 1960s as a Blues Band, that Mick Fleetwood (Drummer) and Jon McVie, (Bass) founded, and stayed with until the Band eventually ended it's existence. Peter Green, Bob Welch, and others were in this group. You have to look at Fleetwood Mac, as two different Bands. Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks, were asked to join in the mid 70s, when the Band was in the midst of a transition.
The early Fleetwood Mac, was completely different from what it eventually became. Both were excellent in different ways.

They were at the core of the British Blues revival, influenced everybody from Ian Anderson to The Beatles (Sun King). (And since i'm a Joni Mitchell fan, i'd like to point out that Stevie Nicks lists Court & Spark as a major influence, and Peter Green attended a BBC performance by Joni, not as musician but as a fan. Stevie Nicks and Don Henley did have a thing going for a while, and they even wrote a duet during that time and it became a minor hit.
Look up "Leather and Lace" by Nicks and Henley if you're interested.
Stevie also hung out - as friends - with Tom Petty and his wife. Tom's wife, who has a bit of a southern drawl, said that she and Petty met at the age of 17. Stevie misheard her at first and thought she said they had met "at the EDGE of seventeen." This is, of course, the name of one of Stevie's biggest solo hits. She and Petty also had a hit duet - "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around".
    Stevie is endlessly fascinating.

You should read a book on Jefferson Airplane. Grace Slick hooked up with Paul Kantner, they had a child together named China who grew up to be an MTV VJ. I read an interview, in "Q" magazine I think, where she said she'd slept with everyone in the band, and Paul said, "So you DID sleep with Marty (Balin)," and she said, "Everyone but him," so it must have been a bone of contention. Marty said the power in the band went to whoever Grace was sleeping with. Marty formed the band with Paul. The bass player Jack Casady and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen formed their own clique and band called Hot Tuna so they were 1 faction, Paul and Grace another, they were more political.
Marty ended up losing control of the band because no one wanted to play his romantic songs so he quit. Eventually Paul formed the Jefferson Starship which was more pop oriented and Marty joined to sing lead on the big singles. Ironically after Mickey Thomas replaced Marty Paul lost control of the band, quit and sued them so they had to change their name by dropping "Jefferson" from the band name.

Fleetwood MAC has had many artistical lineup, so this is really a fairly new band at this time. In fact, it is their 1st album with the new musical direction and leaders (Lindsey Buckingham [guitar, arranger, director] and Stevie Nicks [singer]). The 2 were a couple when they came into the band, and and from this album on, they were fighting, along with pretty much the rest of the band. However, if it weren't for Lindsey, this band would've faded into history as a distant memory by now. In fact, some of the songs performed by Stevie Nicks would never have made it to the albums if not for Linsey rearranging them, directing Stevie and adding just the right touches here and there. This song is a way of him telling her she could get lost.
And, Peter Green was the leader of the band a couple lineups earlier, and before Bob Welch's FM. They had hits too but it was THIS iteration that made them a household name. BTW, Stevie saying that she resented Lindsay that in front of the world is ironic, because she never denied it, and here's the kicker, it WAS TRUE. She slept with Mick Fleetwood. Now, revisit the lyrics and you'll get why she didn't like it ... because he was airing her dirty (but true) laundry in public for all to see !!! She deserved it, if you ask me, and I, for 1, am damn proud of him for doing it. Apparently, the rest of the world agreed.

For the few people who care about music in 5.1, Rumours has one of the best surround sound mixes out there.

Fleetwood Mac is an album rock/concert/FM band. So although their albums are not "concept" i.e. Pet Sounds, St. Pepper, The Wall, they are intended to flow from one track to the next and perform as a single work of art. Picking out singles works as UA-cam entertainment, but it's much like reacting to chapters without reading the novel.

One of the best albums of the 70's, no question about that! An album you look forward to hearing again, doesn't matter how many times you have played it.

Great song, increible album, fantastic band (through every roster). A deep dive into this album is an eye opener. Stevie's own catalog is another place to explore.

Rumors is one of the greatest albums of all time. The album was No. 18 on the Billboard Chart Top 200 and now it is No. 29 on the Billboard Charts. Now 3 months ago, it was No. 8 on the Top 200.....so this group and Stevie Nicks are more popular than EVER among your generation!!!! They are just AWESOME!!!!!

Your t-shirt reminds me of a tidbit I stumbled across the other day. There is a composer from the 60s, named Galt MacDermot, who is one of the most sampled composers in music. There is a video on the CBC site about him. Handsome Boy Modeling School and Busta Rhymes are just two of over 160 artists who sampled him.
    p.s. Great song and review.

11 albums=the peter green era+the Bob Welch era+the Buckingham Nicks era. Mick Fleetwood (drums) and John (bass) and Christine (keys/vocals) Mcvie were the only constant members.

Only John and Mick have been there since the beginning. Christine came on board when Peter Green was essentially gone from the band and Danny Kirwan about a year later.

The 'Rumours' album of 1977 is still widely considered to be one of the greatest rock albums of all time, with every track being a work of genius and it's still as powerful and intoxicating 45 years later as it was when it was released.

People always only associate the Stevie Nicks era with Fleetwood Mac. Sure it was their most succesful and commercial phase, but some of it is pretty fluff (this particular track isn't a favourite of mine). They were a totally different band before, not better, but certainly different, and it's worth checking out older Fleetwood Mac songs, just to get the full picture.
