- Episode 2: Growing Up Old Order Mennonite: The Guenther Family of Muddy Pond Talk about Life on the Farm as Kids In the 1960’s, John & Emma Guenther settled in the Muddy Pond community of Tennessee where they raised 7 sons and 1 Daughter. They started making Sorghum over 50 years ago and the family tradition is still carried on today. Come along with me and meet many of the Gunther family as we take a wagon ride on a Sunday Afternoon.
The Mennonite and Amish are both known for hard work, family traditions and living the simple life. Most seem to be great business people who own farms, general stores and other businesses. If you would like to see more videos about the Amish and Mennonites that live in the Appalachian Mountains please leave me a comment.

Talking of the family and the sorghum, you know that "sticky business" joke has been ran thru a million times. But they ALL still laughed!
Really loved hearing their history, holding their family values and siblings bonding is worth more than a trillion dollar
This video is amazing. We've been raised around these wonderful people but would never had known them had it not been for you. Their values and life style are something that has preserved our country. Thank you and Jody for the work you do.
We appreciate you watching and for your nice comment. Thank you very much

Thank you to the Guenther family for showing this living history of traditions of the past.
You’re welcome
I love how this family stays in the family, they work together, eat together and play together it's a joy to see that some families have carried on these traditions.
I agree! Thanks for watching
@@theappalachianchannel So how well do the Mennonites know the Bible. Do they know the Bible and tell the Gospel as much as the Baptists do.
Family, working hard, using everything, living minimal, memories of common drinking water pail, working horses, no tv growing up, taught values, and enjoyable stories shared, all amazing! Thank you and your sorghum syrup is delicious!!
Well said!

John rice Irwin was quite a man. He saves many ones, barns, antiquities of all kinds. He wrote many booked, which I’ve had for years. I think my first was a quilting one. I loved it because of all of the oral histories he captured. That is an honor to have met mr. Irwin and be invited to do the demonstrations. It opened the doors to so many more things.
I enjoy hearing this family’s stories and visiting with them.
Coming from Sweden. Grown up in a very religious family - father born 1912, mother 1916. I was born 1949.
So very interesting to see what similarities I find in what was forbidden and sinful. Amazing.
Loved to see the family beeing together. So much love! ❤
Much love to you! Thanks for watching
I can’t imagine growing up with parents that strict. Kudos to the parents though for raising good people.
We are so thankful for our upbringing and the work ethic we were taught to have. Thanks for watching!

Very nice video! Thanks for posting...
Thanks so much and thanks for watching
Amazing horses and so beautiful. Gee and Haw. Miss hearing those commands. Thankfully you are keeping up this tradition. Thank you for caring for your elders. The farm I was born on in Va., is still owned by family. It’s been owned by our fzmily/descendants for over 300 yrs. 👏👏 for the praise song before your meal. Those values your parents taught you are the best and because you remember them to this date have such value. What a beautiful family.❤
Thank you for your kind comment and for watching
Thank you all for allowing me to get to learn of your beautiful family one day we will meet.
The Belgian mares are the most beautiful I have seen in a very long time. Great breeding! Thanks for the video. There are many Mennonite families in Montana that I have gotten to know through various businesses they run, and they are super neighbors!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I really enjoyed watching this. I have 3 jars of Muddy Pond sorgum and get it every year. I went there years ago.
Thanks for watching
When I grow up I want to be like you John! I’ll be fifty in October so it’ll be a bit yet 😂. Thanks so much for all the history your not only saving but helping insure that some of it stays going by directing business towards some of these great folks

Good video, John. I’ve seen those signs for the Museum of Appalachia when I used to travel in TN for work, never got a chance to go unfortunately. When I was a kid, I lived in northern NJ right on the PA border and we used to go to the Pennsylvania Dutch festival all the time.
Thanks a lot and thank you for the comment
Think it’s all been said John, but I’ll chime in too. Thanks for making this video. And a big thank you to that wonderful family for allowing us to feel like we visited. They certainly didn’t have to, but it was such a joy to watch.
Thank you for your comment. What state are you watching from?
@@theappalachianchannel Watching from Louisiana John.
We aren’t too far from muddy pond. Have visited the general store a couple times. Bought our rocking chairs from a family there. It’s nice to hear more history.
My family lived just the other side, the Union B side of Muddy Pond so I grew up around Ms Emma and her store and me and my family loved her dearly. My grandparents were Ethridge and Winnie Phillips, my mom was Maxine. Mom took me often to Ms Emma’s it was like one of our special weekend treats we enjoyed these trips so much. My grandparents and my Mom are all passed on now and I was very sad to learn of Ms Emma’s passing. I have truly enjoyed this video so very much and seeing the countryside as I’m rarely in that area anymore even though I still live relatively near. The Gunther family is a wonderful family . I’m Thankful to have known Ms Emma and very Thankful for all the goodness and good times her little store brought to me and mine.
Awesome family meeting and a well made video, You allow the people to shine and you direct from the sideline most of the time. That is why your channel is such a success. Thank you, good job , good storyline. Keep them coming.
Thanks John for taking us to visit this beautiful place once again. In the summer time I can just imagine how wonderful when things are so green. I would love to be riding on this wagon. God bless all of these awesome people. I was born in Jamestown, Tn. Wonderful memories of Tn. ❤
Thanks so much for your comment and God bless you
I so appreciate the video. Good to see familiar faces, and the familiar places, having lived in MP for ten years(side-note; the little house that Mark mentioned down in the hollow was where John and Emma allowed us to live, until John found a piece of land to build our own). I gained a good part of my off-grid skills and refreshed a meaningful part of my own family's memories. There will always be a sincerely special place in my heart for John & Emma.Thank You

Great video..
Thanks
I really enjoyed this video! I can so much relate to this family. I was raised in a fundemental protestant church in PA and experienced a way of life that was similiar to theirs, such as growing up without a TV and telephone. We learned a good work ethic and family life.

Great video John. Enjoyed the hay ride with the horses. It's been 40 years or more since I've been on a horse pulled hayride. Great family. I had 8 siblings growing up and we had similar traditions.
That’s awesome? What state are you watching from?

My family raised Belgians in Indiana till 1940. Grandfather, great grandfather, and great great grandfather. They supplied Belgians to the Ball Brothers of Muncie as well as many others. They would put horses on trains and transport all over the country to customers. It was nothing to see an Auburn or Deusenberg car parked at their house during the depression, a sale being made. Numerous horse auctions at the house for years. We have lots of photos. It would have been neat to see it all then.

Welcome aboard! do you still live in Tennessee ?
Thanks for sharing your family history. Love the farms and of course, the horses. My great-grandfather also liked Belgium's. They were gone by the time I came around, but we had Standardbred and Quarter horses. Our small farm was in RI.
Excited to see more about the family
More coming soon! Thanks for watching
Well I can’t thank you enough for this video. It brought back some very fond memories of my grandparents farm and the simple way of life they lived. It was a part of life that has live on with me . Thank you, be well, be safe.
You’re welcome. Thank you for the comment & thanks for watching
This is soooo fascinating AND heartwarming!! I may leave a couple comments as questions pop up but of course, being a Pennsylvania native, I would love to know where the Mom and Dad of the family met in PA??
Also, I love how important family ties and land are to this family and the dedication they have to each. This family and their division of land reminds me somewhat of the division of land among Jacob’s sons/the Israelites in the Bible ♥️♥️☺️☺️
Not for sure, but will be sure to try and find out. Thanks for your comment and for watching
They met at a church gathering in the Snyder County area.
My grandparents, John and Emma, met in Snyder County, PA.
What part of Snyder county?
Watching as holly Spoke seeing everyone brings back memories of the Holidays at my aunt's house in Indiana back in the 60s - 80s 😊😊😊😊,. Thanks for the video
Love it!!
These people are such a breathe of fresh air!!! They’re so down to earth

This is a wonderful conversational piece of history of the Guenther family! Thank you for sharing...Blessings.

Great family makes for a great video!
That is the same way we control our mules in the fields as I was growing up.
Hello this is really nice video
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful family's heritage.
We live in Canada. My sister-in-law is cousins to this family. I enjoyed hearing the Canadian accent in Doreen's voice. Very interesting family.
Very cool!
I grew in a holiness group in VT that observed many of these traditions with the exception of and horse and buggy / machinery exception for doing work. Although I do remember doing haying including the old Victory rake and a horse - This is a wonderful going back in my memories to that day
We met Mark and Sherry at one of their demonstrations and went out to eat with them. They are wonderful people. We saw them at a couple of other demonstrations and just seemed to connect with them as my husband and I were both raised much the same way, even though we were not Mennonite. My husband had mules at that time too. I am so glad I stumbled across this video! We talk of them often and wonder how they are doing. We even drove up to their place one time but wouldn’t stop in because we felt funny about stopping in unannounced. Wish we lived right in amongst them!
That’s awesome. They are good people. God bless you and yanks for watching our channel
Thanks for watching and commenting. Mark is my dad.
@@hollyelliott9625 Holly, it's like we know your family now, I'm almost sure that I saw your mom and dad at Dollywood. We don't get that way (I-40) very often but if we do, we will be coming by for some of your bread :)
People were healthier back then because they were not scared of germs like they are today.
Great family
Yes they are
Awesome video, thank you John . It did not seem to be 52 minutes everything ran smooth. Can not wait for the next one this was so educational.

Good vid, I still speak fluent low German, my grandparents both sides came from Southern Manitoba Mennonite communities.

This was so very interesting. I enjoyed meeting the family. If I ever get down that way I would love to visit their store. Thank you.
I’m interested in seeing how that sore gum is made . I’m a moonshine & it’s all a hands on art .
I just love this kind of gathering. Listening to this and especially your dad was priceless. I really enjoyed it. I hope to run into your outfit someday. Would love to be a part of your Sunday family time.
Easy come easy go Mennonite style

This was great.
We have a lot of those horse drawn mills down in Florida. It was a big business back in the day. Thank you for the video! I remember the old Buelou ruins, they had three large kettles for cooking the sugar cane in after it was processed. It's a ruin now and they had another sugar mill down the road. It was near Tomoka State Park.

I was raised German Lutheran, but my paternal grandparents were Dutch Reformed, and family history claimed that there was Pennsylvania Dutch somewhere in the family tree. I admire your family, and am glad you've preserved so much of the culture.
Enjoyed the video. Beautiful horses.
Thanks!
Just came across your videos, I absolutely love it! It's the values we were brought up my mother was seventh day Adventist, dad didn't seem very religious, but I'm 63 now, and I relate more to your beliefs!!! I actually crave this lifestyle!!!
My suggestion for a channel name- “ Milemarker memories “
I love this channel it's so much the same way my family lives. But we live in western Pa. Also part of Appalachia. It's like we are all the same family. Thanks for the videos
I was born and raised in Wayne Co. Kentucky ... My Dad raised mules and I remember helping him work those mules either in the garden or in the wagon... I sure enjoyed being raised that way and so thankful for it too.... So glad to see y'all taking care of the land your forefathers had.... Such Beautiful land.... Thanks for sharing
You’re welcome Regina
Fine folks! Love watching them make sorghum in cades cove.

Thanks for sharing the Guenther family their life and traditions with us. We have Mennonite families here in Pennsylvania that live in our area and they definitely are hard working people and are richly Blessed. I really enjoyed watching their video and would like to try the sorghum and molasses. Can't wait to see the next video.

The Father was very wise in making the family land can't be sold.
That you for sharing your family
Our family always sang the doxollgy when the family gathered at the grandparents for dinner. We have asked several people if their family did. Your family is the first we've found that sings it. Brought memories back. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your family’s story. This is awesome. It’s so interesting to hear when you first had electricity, running water or got to see TV. Your dad on a four wheeler with a big smile on his face! What a great memory. ❤
