Dude...DUde...DUDE! You have fixed my folly. Spyros, you're a genius. I love your clear and concise presentation, too. Your energy is infectious. Thank you. I dabble in videos vs photos. But, I'm sure it's the same principle, yes?
To the point information is whats missing on youtube. Thanks for this. I have substantial experience with taking pictures in a non studio set up , playing with available light on the spot which is something i absolutely love doing. Now, im seting up a studio at my place and having to control all the light and shadows and everything is a different universe. Thanks for this.
I only can on here for this exact explanation to improve my videos and subscribed just because of this explanation! 😀😅 I’m telling you, good teaching goes a long way! I don’t even know what the other content is about lolz😂 but I’m here for it 😊
I may have seen some of your videos before, but this one takes the cake .. well explained ... you have just shared the learning ... thanks & i just like your channel ... good job
வீடியோ மிகவும் பயனுள்ளதாக இருந்தது மிக்க நன்றி இரா.மனோகர் சென்னை . Very useful video sir, I learned lot from it, looking forward more videos like this keep it up good work, thanks a lot sirbig thank you R.MANOHAR ,Chennai
Thanks this really help me. I have that problem so now I know what to do about my lights. I guess I be way too close to my subject so I need to be away and the subject in the middle now.
Simple, on point, straight ahead ideas for understanding why shadows happen, and different approaches to reducing shadows on backdrops. Simple yes, but absolutely table stakes for studio lighting technique building. Thanks for the reminders. :-)
Oh my gosh, this is so helpful. Though I'm guessing there are times shadows are effective? I was just shooting some video and got two shadows and figured that was a bit of a video faux pas, I don't know.
Exactly what I needed! Thank you! I have 2 umbrella lights and couldn't figure out why I kept getting a shadow behind me for my boutique photos. I think I need to just move my lights. I have little space and normally I have a light on each side of the camera but maybe I need to put them on each side of me. Also, do you recommend using flash while in this setting?
What is the merit of the collapsed umbrella? Why not pop the umbrella properly? What does using it half collapsed bring to the shot that fully extended would lack? Cheers!
Thank you very helpful! I am struggling with shadows in my workout videos and just stepping away from the wall helps. I have limited space so I had to get creative with that too!
Life changing. I could not figure out my video lighting because I don’t have any room to move me. This should do the trick; I just need to find something to bounce the light.
Not sure what type of shows you like, but here are a few I enjoy: -Archer -Bojack Horseman -Arrested Development -Frasier -Bob's Burgers -It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia And a few I've heard are good but can't vouch for myself: -The League -The Inbetweeners Archer and Bojack took me a little while to get into, and I onot watched the first 3 seasons of Arrested Development because season 3 was so bad.
Thank you!!! That's a great list, some of my favorite shows are on there, but I haven't watched Bojack, Frasier or The Inbetweeners. I'll definitely check those out. :)
Hey Spyros, Great and informational vid. I'm noticing your backdrop mount and wanted to know a bit more about it. I'm trying to budget and do my similar own setup in a spare bedroom. Can you help?
Thank You soooooo much. ⚡️I have asked this question several times and received no response. Is a new “UA-camr” Lighting has been a challenge. however, I plan on using the soft light 1st to remove the shadows. If that doesn’t provide you the look I want then I’ll try the V-flat. S.R. Ridley, A Nurse You Can Trust
Thanks for the easy to understand lighting advice, I appreciate it. Here's some shows My hubby and I personally like to watch--- Bob's burgers, Merlin, Rick & Morty, The Incredible Dr. Pol, Rocky Mountain Vet (Dr. Jeff), My Hero Academia, Bleach, Inuyasha, Tokyo Ghoul, Hunter Hunter, The Great British Sewing bee 🐝, there's tons of great shows roughly 30 minutes these are mostly on UA-cam or Hulu, Posdibly available on different streaming/cable I'm sure!
What about if you have No choice only to have your flash on top of the camera on the hot shoe and No option to bounce (Event Run and gun) how do you eliminate shadows then? Thanks for above tips learned A lot!
That’s a tough spot. Best bet there is going to be getting the subject away from walls/etc that will catch shadows, and as much as possible work the flash and camera angle to compose the shadows out of the shot.
I thought it was another boring vid but you were on point👍😁 My photography skills dropped to 0, despite coming first in Photography & Art at school🥴 I'm such a disappointment💀
Very good video however, at 2:30 You say very little shadow and its Incredible HUGE shadow on your left face as a viewer watching this video. I am making videos in my Kitchen there is a silver Refrigerator in the background, I put a black blanket over it, I have a 1200 d 2, light with umbrella, and I was trying to get more clear lighting, I have seen Housewife's making videos about Juicers that have absolutely gorgeous lighting, though not every video but the one about the Hamilton Juicer was incredible, and I thought, how did she do that? No shadows just pure beautiful lighting whether its a backdrop or a kitchen drop or a green screen, I have a challenge getting the lighting to absolute perfection. It even can effect the thumbnails. Anyways..thanks for the video. Nice.
How about doing a video on ways of eliminating the glare from strobes/speedlights from eye glass lenses? I realize some people may be able to borrow eyeglass frames (with no lenses) from their optician. But there are going to be times when empty eyeglass frames are unavailable. What can a thoughtful photographer do then?
BerendPhotography COM This is something I’ve done a couple times on my channel, I use the aputure light dome (a giant soft box) and just played with the angle and height until it worked while simultaneously using a second light, ring light with a built in diffuser directly onto the speaker and whiteboard. The soft box was acting as a giant fill light while the ring light illuminated the speaker and balanced the light on their face. Also, I found having a b-cam with a tighter shot of the whiteboard really helped a lot.
I am not using studio lights I have a d300 shooting some pre school children in their cap and gowns. I have been practicing but each time I have a shadow on the left side how can I not have a shadow when not using studio lights
Hi, good tips there. I having a problem with shadow on a product photography. I put them on the white desk with white backdrop, and have 2 speedlight on left and right side of the product. I get 2 shadow instead..
You’re the only person on UA-cam that explained this in a way that an amateur like me could understand! Thank you!

And at last someone spoke the simple language I could understand. Thank you for the tips 👌🏾
The 3rd technique at 3:33 with two lights is the best option for me, thank you.

Thanks this really help me. I have that problem so now I know what to do about my lights. I guess I be way too close to my subject so I need to be away and the subject in the middle now.

Interesting to know how would you get rid of the horrible glare in your spectacles. All the best
thank you so much...i was just asking myself how to illuminate that today...very helpful
Is that a projector screen you are using or is it paper?
What is the merit of the collapsed umbrella? Why not pop the umbrella properly? What does using it half collapsed bring to the shot that fully extended would lack? Cheers!
Thank you! As for a great show to watch while exercising, you can't go wrong with "Northern Exposure"! :)

Absolutely brilliant. I finally understand now.
This was an amazing explanation. Thanks
Thanks for sharing this freely. How about lighting for zoom calls? That seems to be a challenge as the ring light creates shadows on the background
Super understandable. Thank you.

Thank you. This vedio solve my lots of lighting problems.👍
Thanks love your explanation
omg thanks so much!! I was having this issue ugh...

Great video advice for lighting, thank you Spyros!
Amazing information. Thank you!
great and easy to understand
How does this compare with props on set when certain objects need to be close to the wall?
Life saver, thankyou!

I'll be looking forward to the video! Thanks much!
No problem!
Thanks for the video! Question .. I had to do a video with someone working on a whiteboard all te time. It was tuff. What would you suggest?
BerendPhotography COM This is something I’ve done a couple times on my channel, I use the aputure light dome (a giant soft box) and just played with the angle and height until it worked while simultaneously using a second light, ring light with a built in diffuser directly onto the speaker and whiteboard. What fluid head do you have to mount the camera?
Very handy video thanks
Are ring lights completly useless then?
I am not using studio lights I have a d300 shooting some pre school children in their cap and gowns. I have been practicing but each time I have a shadow on the left side how can I not have a shadow when not using studio lights
Excellent explanation thank you 🍻
Hi, good tips there. I having a problem with shadow on a product photography. I put them on the white desk with white backdrop, and have 2 speedlight on left and right side of the product. I get 2 shadow instead..
How about aerial light positioning?
great explanation! Thank you so much :)
