Great video!! Exactly how i’ve been feeling. I work in IT and make over 85k a year, however I’m extremely unhappy. I waste money on unnecessary things to keep me going. I picked up with doing Instacart and Spark delivery and I find myself enjoying it. Although, I know that it will be short term for me (no longer than 6 months). I’m in the beginning stages of 2 businesses and writing a children’s book and probably will never go back to a 9-5!

Im so glad I found this video. I recently quit my remote 9-5 because it was absolutely destroying my mental health. Sometimes I battle with if I made the right decision or not, but I definitely think I did because I would literally break out in hives and have panic attacks after work each day. I’ve dramatically downsized how I’m spending money and like you was spending money out of lack of fulfillment from my 9-5 (spending money to keep me going on my 9-5). My job really burnt me out and I can’t help but feel bitter and resentful towards my previous employer. I’m fact, I still feel burnt out and it’s been 2 months. I don’t ever want to go back to working for someone else and hopefully will find some success in my journey of self employment.
Wow that sounds so so similar to how I felt and my journey! There must be something to the burn out that comes with engineering consulting.. I found so much more fulfillment in self employment and can’t imagine going back to the 9-5 every again.. I hope you find the same!! My burn out took like 6 months to fully feel “gone”. I loved this! I was wondering about the work ethic piece in particular. July will be my first month doing gig work after leaving my 9-5, and I was wondering how the change in my time and schedule would impact my work ethic. Thanks for shedding light on this!

As a bartender, I really was thrilled to hear you now understand the importance of tipping for service workers. That being said, I do not feel that way about people who draw a good salary (like medical professionals) that ask to be tipped. I just don't understand that at all.
I wish everyone experiences working in service or gig work for that reason!! It really really changed my perspective. Interesting.. medical professionals request to be tipped? Curious to hear more about that😬
Great vid Paige! I'm currently a senior mechanical engineer about to graduate. I resonated with a lot of things you said! For example, I remember working virtually as a co-op couple years back and I completely agree..... Most meetings are a waste of time lmao
Right?! And virtual meetings are even worse!! Corporate America needs to figure out that meeting thing😂 Congrats on almost graduating!! That’s a huge accomplishment!
thank you for this video! unfortunately, the time is money shift really went south for me when i went salary.... if i know there is zero way for me to make more money / increase my income by performance and even if i finish stuff early i still have to stay till 5 🙄🙄 id rather be here and not bored working than bored and done with all my work early / having to do more because im a quick worker 🙄🙄 getting punished for good performance is nuts to me. 🙄🙄

Most people don't understand how they get paid. For example some people don't count the drive time in there hourly from the time they do there Last job till the time they get home or the employee who makes 20 per hour but has not factored in the 10-20 percent for tax and drive time to and from work. I make about 20 per hour net from the time I leave till the time I'm home doing Instacart In southern California. We get a hourly guarantee plus .30 a mile while on a batch.
That’s very true! Definitely important to factor all of that in when making decisions but also important to consider that we can deduct expenses! And a lot of other jobs require driving time to and from but you can’t deduct if it’s not a “gig work” job. In my experience, if you are smart with your time and keep track of expenses, it can be comparable to many other hourly jobs but gig work is much more flexible!
I feel like the biggest barrier for people being able to pursue the "American Dream", is health insurance. Being able to affordably provide health coverage for your family is tied to a corporate job that fulfills your CEO's American Dream and squelches yours.
That is so so true! It’s something I’m still trying to figure out.. we haven’t had health insurance since I quit my 9-5 for that reason but as soon as I’m making more consistent income, I’m going to be doing research on health insurance!

I have a easy, great job that pays well with all kinds of benefits and paid time off.But I hate having to show up every day and committed to staying 9 hours. So I have been driving for Lyft for 6 monthes now, and I love it! I want to quit my job and do it full time, but very nervous about givng up that steady paycheck.
