  • Final Era of Southern Pacific on Moffat Tunnel Route 1994-1996! The Southern Pacific Railroad climbed over the mountainous Continental Divide, through spectacular breathtaking scenery, of the former Denver & Rio Grande Western Moffat Tunnel Route. Classic locomotive types included former Rio Grande SD50 and SD40T-2 tunnel motors, SP SD45, SD40T-2 and SD45T-2 tunnel motors, and modern for the time, AC4400CW class units. Also featured are Amtrak's California Zephyr, pulled by F40PH and P40DC passenger engines, and the Winter Park Ski Train, pulled by SP GP40-2 freight diesels. This was the final era of the Southern Pacific before it's September 1996 absorption into the massive Union Pacific system.

      @@WaltLoevyActionTrainVideos because those mergers exist and those railroads are defunct, fewer trains will be on the line and when more people are born and more transportation is needed, the railroads like the UP will wish they didn't do any mergers or takeovers.

    Looks like those 2 Amtrak trains seen here also need SP or Rio Grande helpers on the end to get up the mountains like the freight trains, eh?

    I like how the Colorado Springs Utilities coal train is running in "reverse," with the former solo end helper now getting to lead. Great video. I don't know what I miss more, the SP, D&RGW, or graffiti free railcars.

    Amtrak uses that white and red baggage car for the tour of the German Intercity Express train in the United States during 1993. The ICE tour special in the US is led by F69PHACs #450 and #451, both of which are the only F69s built and were still owned by EMD when Amtrak used them. This is called 'demonstrating.' Both F69PHACs were sold to National Railway Equipment Industries (NREI) in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, where they were stripped with numerous loco parts.

    First off, kudos to you for recording those coal trains in the Winter. Second, the Railroad Crossing at 11:17, couldn't tell if the lights were actually flashing when that empty coal train was passing by. And last but not least, did the SP Locomotives always flash their ditch lights when approaching Railroad Crossings? I thought that was only done by Railroads on the East Coast such as CR, NS, and CSX.

    • @WaltLoevyActionTrainVideos
      @WaltLoevyActionTrainVideos  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you 😊. The camera may not have been at a good angle to see the crossing lights. I don't know for sure about SP ditch lights flashing. They may have been experimental at this time.

    So, what’s that ICE tour baggage car doing on a long distance train behind those boxcars?

  • @AlikStansberry
    @AlikStansberry 2 роки тому +1

    It’s always quite sad to see the last years of railroads, especially SP. if they didn’t make the mistakes they did than maybe they’d still be around, but unfortunately due to how much they were struggling UP acquired them and put those ugly yellow number plates on SP’s units.
    Now, about the newer units like the GE AC4400CW’s they had during their last years? While I do appreciate them, I somewhat hate them because they are part of what makes most if not all locomotives today look the same. When efficiency became much more the focus and less about making units look different or unique. Heck, I give points to Norfolk Southern for at least putting the designations on the sides of their units so you can easily tell which is which.
