    I am Algerian, living in Algiers which is the capital of Algeria. Knowing that the name of my city is the same and this city's name came from the Algerian Algiers is such an honor. I have a dream to visit the U.S one day and maybe i would make it there,it's so exciting. Thank you for your videos ♥️🙏

      The Algiers neighborhood is the second oldest in New Orleans, with the name being used for over 300 years. Back then, almost everyone here was from somewhere across the Atlantic, so various parts of the city were given names reminiscent of places over there. I don't think there was any particular concentration of Algerian people in Algiers, but being that most of the people here came from Europe back then, they probably had traveled around quite a bit. Algeria, and specifically Algiers, is close enough to Europe that the early city planners may have visited there at some point, and planned to model the area off of Algiers, Algeria. I'm not sure how much it resembles it today. Most of the current architecture dates from the late 1890s, as a large portion of it was destroyed by fire in 1894.

    I just loved watching this video! My husband and I have lived here for just over 19 years and it's just a wonderful neighborhood -- rich, poor and in between, all races, renters, homeowners, gays, straights, young, middle-aged and old people. Even the occasional mime! All in a neighborhood that is made up of people fiercely loyal to it and protective of it, and full of interesting shops, bars and businesses, like the beloved glass blowing studio on Vallette Street. Thanks so much for the tour of my own backyard!

    I moved to Historic Algiers Point in 1955. Then they had three movie theatres, two play grounds, two swimming pools, a dry cleaners, numerous Protestant churches and one Catholic Church, two public schools, one Catholic school, numerous Mom and Pop grocery stores. In Algiers Point the had two rail roads one Public Belt Rail Road near the levee and one on Atlantic St. The Southern Pacific Rail Road. Several Bars for Adult beverages. Two bakeries

    • @504RoadTrips
      @504RoadTrips  4 роки тому +2

      No more movie theaters or public swimming pools. There are still playgrounds. Not sure if Westside Cleaners is still in business or not...I’m pretty sure the sign is still up. Only one corner grocery store, a couple of coffee houses. The churches are still there, but the Catholic school is now a public International school. There are a couple of coffee shops and at least two bars that were bars back in the 50s and earlier. There are restaurants near the ferry landing. Russell Templet still cuts hair on Delaronde Street...he’s been cutting hair on the Point for over 60 years.

    Another great video. This one was quite different, though, because of the new focus on historical sites and buildings. Although I grew up in New Orleans, I never went to Algiers, even though it was across the river. Now, at least, I feel that I know a little about the place.

    A really enjoyable video. Our family owned a home across from the library on Pelican Ave. in the 50's. I went to Behrman High School, later married and lived on Delaronde St., then Belleville St. Many years later became a Realtor and sold many homes in the point. I enjoyed seeing some of the houses I had sold years ago. As a teen ager, living in Algiers was like living in a small town, very homey and calm in the 50's and 60's. Thanks for the memories.

      They’re called batture houses. I wasn’t aware of any in Gretna, but there were two just upriver of the Algiers ferry landing until the mid-80s. Both were built by relatives of mine, probably close to 100 years ago now. They were eventually abandoned and the city demolished them.
      There are still some on the east bank at the Orleans/Jefferson Parish line.

      EDITED TO ADD: Wow, I just googled batture houses, those are regular houses, I saw boats on stilts, on solid land, on the river side of the levee, I am almost positive! :O (The address is 123 Ocean Ave, Gretna LA )

    I remember there being controversy in Memphis when it was discovered Memphis Beat was actually filmed in New Orleans. Also, I had no idea there was a part of New Orleans on the opposite side of the river. I just assumed it was all on one side like Memphis or St. Louis.

    • @504RoadTrips
      @504RoadTrips  2 роки тому +2

      I didn’t think it was a secret that Memphis Beat was filmed in New Orleans. I knew about it before the first episode aired, and that’s why I wanted to watch it. But I lost interest pretty quickly. The show just wasn’t all that great.
      Algiers and the French Quarter began around the same time to establish commerce on both sides of the river. Algiers was annexed into New Orleans in the mid 1800s.
      Remember that Memphis and St Louis are up against a state line, which keeps the cities from spilling over the river. But look at Minneapolis and St Paul. You’d think the river would separate them, but each of them exist on both sides.

    • @historyrebel
      @historyrebel 2 роки тому +2

      @@504RoadTrips Ah, that was poor wording on my part making it sound like it was a big secret. It was pretty well known by the time the show aired. I watched a few minutes of one episode and figured out pretty fast it wasn't for me. Being all in one state probably does help.
      I have also watched 12 Rounds. I don't know if I would've made the connection if you hadn't pointed it out, but the area did look a little recognizable.

    • @504RoadTrips
      @504RoadTrips  2 роки тому +1

      @@historyrebel when Memphis Beat and 12 Rounds were filmed, New Orleans was a big film production location, and they were getting ready to build a huge studio in Algiers. There were/are two huge former Southern Pacific warehouses on the edge of the Algiers Point neighborhood that are full of sound stages and properties storage. Just when it was getting good, our current governor was elected and he cut all of the tax breaks for the movie productions, and raised sales tax by a percent. Overnight, all of the filming seemed to stop. It did some serious damage to the economy, because the studios spent a lot of money with local businesses
      It’s starting to pick back up now, since it’s still probably a lot cheaper to produce movies and shows here than it is in California.
      Back to your original comment, another movie filmed in New Orleans, but set in rural Georgia was the Dukes of Hazzard movie from about 10-15 years ago. The chase around Lee Circle should have been the tip-off for anyone who has ever been here.

If you're watching on a computer, hit the little gear icon at the lower right side of the screen, and play back at 1/2 speed. This was filmed at 60 frames per second, so if you do that, you'll see all the driving parts at realtime speed. 811 Opelousas is right off the corner of Belleville, and you can catch a slight glimpse of it at around the 0:38 mark.
      Now that I've rewatched this video, I'm thinking I might get back out there and make a new one of Algiers Point, since I now have much better equipment. This old video is pretty shaky on the rough streets of Orleans Parish.

    I was filming with my gopro on dalorond street and a man followed me mumbling expletives into a phone then finally accosted me. "Why you filming people, would you like people filming you?" I told him I wasnt filming people only street scenes. He said" people dont want thier business out on the web" i tried to reason with him told him it was for personal use and even apologized, but then he impeded my progress. I filmed a total of 60 seconds the whole time there and my wife took several selfies. Having studied self defense and grappling i contemplated my next move and difussed the situation by backing off, feeling i was in the wrong since the begining and being in his neighborhood. But it left a very bad taste in my mouth about new orleans in general. Are people really sensitive about visitors, filming, tourist or was this just an unstable man?

    • @504RoadTrips
      @504RoadTrips  5 років тому +1

      No, I've never heard of such a thing. Some *people* are sensitive about being filmed, and you should avoid pointing the camera directly at them. I typically just point the camera down until I'm past them when I'm doing that kind of video.
      Algiers Point is a heavy tourist area, and take the ferry across and do that all day long. I have a house about a block from there and I see it all the time. You probably just ran into some nutcase.
      I would have called the police. If you're on a public street filming, nobody has any expectation of privacy.
