- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can be a scary condition, characterized by unwanted, intrusive thoughts and obsessions that a person responds to by engaging in compulsive behaviours to try and neutralize the anxiety and distress caused by the obsessions. However, these attempts at neutralizing or reducing the distress triggered by the obsessions often leads to feeding back into the obsessive thoughts, causing the OCD spiral to continue. What is often missing from the understanding of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is that everyone gets these types of random, intrusive thoughts, similar to the thoughts that people experience in OCD. The difference is, in OCD, the person interprets the thoughts in a way that makes the thought feel more scary or dangerous, leading anxiety and distress. The interpretation of the intrusive thoughts is what we call appraisals and these appraisals are the secret, typically unknown thoughts that really fuel the OCD engine. The four main appraisals that drive Obsessive Compulsive Disorder are: overimportance of thoughts; overestimations of danger; an inflated sense of responsibility; and a need for certainty and control over thoughts. It is important to understand how these appraisals and interpretations of obsessions can lead to anxiety and compulsive behaviours aimed at neutralizing the anxiety because, once you are aware of the appraisals, you can begin to challenge the meaning and importance that you place on the intrusive thoughts. Future videos will discuss ways of challenging each of the common appraisals in OCD.
