What a wonderful vocation. Has anyone else noticed how readily these nuns laugh? I was at my local Carmelite monastery, and while I couldn't see the nuns, they, too, had a great sense of humor. Lauighter and even girlish giggles were frequent. They must be doing something right. God bless 'em all.

watching my dearest friend, "Doff" as she was known as , now known as Mother Dorothea, whom i started out my nursing with, it seems like only yesterday but in fact nearly 40 years ago, those years have gone so quickly but she looks exactly the same as i remember her. i feel deep emotion remembering all the wonderful times we had together in the nurses home, and the great comfort she gave me in a time when i was at one of my lowest ebbs, you will be close to my heart always .

I first met the Carmelites in 1972 in the person of Sister Veronica of the Holy Face [Holloway] who was professed in 1952 and went to God quite a number of years ago now. She was a woman of great holiness, simplicity and common sense that made her, though she never sought to be, an effective counsellor when I tried my own religious vocation (twice!). She was also an enormous help to my parents and my younge sister when she was goiing though all kinds of teenage difficulties, always so compassionate and unuderstanding. For years she kept me up to date with day to day life in ChCh Carmel though I was on the other side of the world, including news of Dorothea''s arival & eventual profession. These women are WISE, unaffected, unpretensious, warm, loving and a most wonderful example in learning how to grow closer to God.

Such joy. I know from my own life in the world that the more I seek God and have union with him in the day to day moments the more joy I feel. God who is love, wants to fill all of us and love us so much, if we would just let him. So many of our thoughts and actions take us away from him. I pray more will love the Lord God with all their heart. The reward is 100 times back. For we cannot out do God in love, joy, peace and forgiveness. He is the answer.

They are full of joy, the love of God is showing in them. They spend their lives in prayer, they stand before God for the rest of the world. Some have the vocation to 'get out and help others' some have the vocation to pray, both go hand in hand, one cannot survive without the other. Action and prayer. It is a vocation. We choose to be ie, nurse, accountant, secretary. God chooses us for His work we do not choose this.

I have some hater brothering me about these beautiful woman I admire so much and love the way they live. idols are not a picture of Christ as any picture is an image. some people just love to tear others down as it the only way they can feel good about themselves. If not for my son who disable I would have my priest place me in a Carmelite convent regardless of my age. I could live like that forever till my time comes they have so much joy in Jesus.

You sound fundamentalist or evangelical though so I forgive your ignorance regarding these matters..what makes you think they'd fail miserably? Cloistered life is a call within a call..not everyone has this call and trust me..not many could persevere..the monastic vocation is rare because of how magnetic the corruption of society is with its pleasures and temptations..these men and women of God pray for the world do you realize that? Yes it includes you...

Sounds like you know zilch about the history of monasticism and how it came into existence in the first few centuries..even before that..in the Old Testament around time of Elijah..seek to understand why someone would flee the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah before you pass judgment--incidentally there were early theologians who questioned early eremetical lifestyles for the very reason you state which is how communities of hermits came into existence

if those nuns really had to go out into the world and help others, they would fail miserably. monks are just as guilty. what's the sense in hiding from the world? Silence doesnt solve anything, get out there and tell others about Jesus.

These nuns are laughing and giggling a lot ! I thought that the Carmelite nuns are not supposed to talk much or laugh !
