I’ve had the 455 two seasons this will be my third.. I’ve cut about 16 face cords 8 per year.. besides some sap I can clean off it starts like the day I bought it. Most reliable saw out there I’ve been told many times.. good video.
You got me. I heard that good sounding high rpm screamer and i was putting my clothes back on so i could go out to the garage and gut my muffler. Then i realized. Haha good one
Nice video man. I got a brand new 460 im going to do this to. I got the right carb tool for it. Im sure it will need to be fattened up on both screws after. Thanks again.
Last year I bought a 455 rancher. Took off the muffler after a few tanks of fuel to see how the piston & cylinder were wearing in and on mine, it's just a hollow can, like yours after the baffle delete but with an IMO small hole under the spark arrester/deflector like your dad's. Been thinking about opening it up, just wasn't sure how a strato saw would react. Thanks for sharing!
Definitely noticable improvement. Seems to have far better responsiveness, a little more on the top end and it seems to not lose its lungs on the bottom end when you load it up. Makes it run, well... Like a 55.5 cc saw probably should run stock. Not all choked up and slower than a 50cc saw running .325.
Thanks, I appreciate it. Yeah, they're great saws. They get overlooked a lot. People are catching on in my area, but one used to be able to buy them dirt cheap. They're a bit heavier than others in the same category, but not enough to deter me. At the end of the day, they'll put wood in the truck and a smile on your face. All for a decent price at that!
My 455 doesn’t have the baffle plate inside the factory muffler. Husky must have realized removing it was a good thing. I still intend on opening up the exhaust hole like you did. That opening is super tiny!

Sounds Nice now port and polish the intake and exhaust ports on the cylinder head on the next rebuild along with the exhaust mod. Does modifying the exhaust need carb tuning?
Two stroke exhaust is very complex if you really get down to exhaust pulses, expansion chambers, tail length etc. I’m not sure louder or less restriction means more power. It might. It might also lean the saw way out requiring a reject to richen up fuel.
2 stroke motors will burn down if the don't breath correctly. Reducing exhaust back pressure could cause a burn down. I stick to the engineered stock exhaust. My 455 Rancher runs great as a stock machine. Good luck with the mods.
If you ran a marathon, would you like to run it wearing a baffle plate (mask) or without a baffle plate? Which one would FORCE you to breath differently?
@@PapaFoxtrot2002 joe, I have ridden sleds, boats and fast cars. The modified rigs are fun but may not make a cross country trip. My stock rigs always will. I enjoy the dependable ones for the long haul.
The small mod he did will not cause "burn down," In fact, I've never seen any damage unless there is excessive back pressure and a leak at the exhaust to cylinder mating surface.
That’s an old wives tail….the only reason any engine would “burn down” after a mod would be because of an improper tune afterwards! Same with running an engine with open headers …many people have always said “You’ll burn your valves if you run open headers” ….again..only if it’s not properly tuned……not because of the open headers.
I had a Jonsered 2255 for a few years. Loved it. Was always an excellent saw. I just completely lost interest in it when my Poulan 330 beat it...handily. just the way it went for me. Still a great saw.
Yeah it's a good firewood saw. It's slow and honestly, "mediocre" in my world, but it never fails to put wood in the truck ;) Those poulans are good runners!
Two stoke motors have a special design for a reason, dirt bikes for example if you dent that can on the exhaust it with affect the way the motor runs and can cause damage to it. Sounds beastly but I'm sure doing that will ruin your motor in a short period. Maybe drilling a hole or two in the baffle would be ok but still a risk I wouldn't take, unless I've done some work to the motor itself.
Great saw. It can be a good idea if you use standard gas for cars to remove gas if its not used within 6 month since after 6 month gas and ethanol can separate and you get all kind of problems. Thx
Two-cycle engines require some back pressure to perform optimally. I have a newer version of this saw and it performs flawlessly as long as the routine maintenance is done. Throttle response, at least in my case, is redundant.
How do you tune it low and high once you gut the muffler or add a pipe? Is it low that needs it or high? Or both? I’m no mechanic, it I know what a saw that’s not running right or cutting right feels n looks like. I just don’t know how to fix it.
Usually it will need high jet adjustment. It will not warm up as fast and may need a slight low jet adjustment and possibly an increase in idle rpm depending on the saw and how aggressive you go with the opening. Kind of a case by case deal.
I never noticed before, but I just test fit it onto my 359 while I had it. It fits! I really like the chain tensioner system in the cover like that. I'm actually in the process of grafting one into a 3120xp cover to convert it to a side adjust. Just a couple things to "tweak" before it fits 😆

How is your mod not melting the chain brake? I explain it in the video. If you watch at the 12:40 mark in the video it shows this. I didn't open it any further beyond the deflector than the factory hole was. I think you're seeing the shiny edge on top that I touched/cleaned up with the burr. Underneath where the actual outlet is, isn't opened that far forward. The majority of the exhaust gasses hit the deflector and push ALL of the the charge (including any little bit that's trying to go straight up) out forward toward the front of the saw. Therefore, no melted plastics.
Just tried this on my 460 Rancher. Had the three bolt set up but the baffle plate was spot welded in about 9 places and removing it caused damage. Not blaming Samish. I called West Coast Saw asking why they had no bark boxes or anything for a “homeowner” 460 as he sniffed the answer.
Most people don't spend money modding a throw away saw (plastic bottom end, when its cooked its not really rebuildable), so it wouldn't sell well enough to be worth it for him designing and tooling all the stuff needed to offer those components

The dog really wants to play fetch with that toy..so bored. The sound is slightly louder because of less deflection of sound waves by the baffle. I would put fins inside to further muffle and gain compression. It needs to have the right amount of channeling to be more efficient as well as quiet.
Two stroke engines require an amount of backpressure to operate efficiently and taking out the baffle plate may have just as easily reduced power as increased it.
