  • Mark Fisher and Janis Gillham Grady are joined by John McLean for an interview. John got involved in Scientology in the late 1960s as a teenager through his family up in Toronto, Canada. He was recruited into the Sea Organization and sent to the Flagship Apollo at age 18 to work with L. Ron Hubbard.
John recounts stories about life on the Apollo, working with Hubbard and witnessing Hubbard's abuses.
He also tell the story of the coup d'etat in Morocco against the King of Morocco while the Flagship Apollo and Hubbard were in the country trying to establish good relations with the Government. Scientology decided to help the King locate those invoved with the coup by using Scientology Security Checking techniques (interogations) and John McLean was assigned the duty of getting the Scientology auditors together to do this.
The results did not turn out well and resulted in John deciding to leave the ship and the Sea Organization. A fascinating story.
John is the son of Nan McLean, who became an outspoken critic of Scientology in Canada in the early 70's. We will cover those stories in our next interview with John McLean.
We hope you enjoy this interesting video.

Thank you very much. John was a very close friend on the ship. In fact my father sponsored John when he was getting ready to join the Sea Org and was getting a passport to travel. My father and was very close to Nan.

I recently came upon the W5 interview the McLean family did. In it, John's mother seems to be very early in her deprogramming. This fellow Canadian can't wait for part 2.

I'm enjoying you two sharing your year of re-connection. There are so many good people who were looking for better - I'm glad you've found it outside the walls and isolation.
It's nice to meet John and hear his story. And, I do hope Gerry is doing well.

This was a fantastic episode. John is a great interviewee. I really enjoy guests from this era of SCN, because in order to really know what has happened you do need to know where it has been. 👍👍❤️🤷‍♀️

Many I’ve listened to recently have expressed concerns about these oral histories. I hope they are listening. It is so important. Yes, some reminiscences are fun. However, I’ve learned in each story are common threads of alerting authorities, people of character, people isolated in their work, people trapped and survivors.

He also says that he was "coerced" to sign for the Sea Org, but then he explains that he had red all the books on Scientology, agreed to those ideas and was very willing to "save the world".

I remember going to the place the documents were displayed. I met Nan and Paulette Cooper going through the docs. I think I bought coffee for both. I was working for the gardians office the time

John McLean and family were on show W5. It was a compelling program, but who knew how much more to the story there was?

Could be good to know exactly who was harassing his mother these people!! Just like the Chase problem and Chancellor problem at flag ripping off lots of people with their credit cards and donating it to the IAS!! And then when my cards crap out they don't help fix them.

To this day flag has people signing things to that they won't spread any bad news about their experience. !!! Totally out freedom.

It'd be interesting to know the third party difficulty from the execs that sent back to Canada causing all this trouble with his mother. Just like DM took over and third party.

It seems that the 13 moroccan officers executed was not the result of the Security Check, because according to Janis, the Sea Org departed Morocco 5 weeks before the executions were reported in the news. More clarification is needed in this timeline of events.
    Quote:
    54:46
[John] On the 14th of January 1973 I read in our Toronto glob and mail that 13 Moroccan officers were executed.
[Janis] Yeah that was about five weeks after we we packed up and got out of the country as fast as we could because it it was exposed to the person on the list who was the head of the coup.
    End Quote:

Thanks. I think his point was that he felt somewhat responsible and guilty even though it happened a few weeks later.
