    Something similar happened last weekend to me. On a lake riding with my group going about 80 I could see pretty far ahead of me but I started to gain on my friends in front of me so the snow dust started to catch up. Well I moved to the left to see and there was this huge snow drift and I hit it and it launched me into the air. Now I’ve jumped my sled a good amount of times so I wasn’t like panicking but then naturally as I start to come down I spot my landing and there is another decent sized snow drift so I lowered my front end squeezed as hard as I could and plowed through it. It hurt but I landed and kept going. If it was an ice ridge... I’d probably be obliterated on impact. Lakes are just really dangerous to cross especially if they are not marked and don’t get groomed.

    In 1997, I flipped my sled hitting a "pressure crack" at 17 years old around 80-90 MPH. I hit the crack at an approximated 45 degree angle and my body was leaning into the turn. My dad said I "skipped across the ice like a flat stone on water, I thought the sled was going to run you over". Sleds then had 8-10 inches of travel but rolled hard and fast. The sled was toast after the accident. Hood, skis, gauges, handle bar, and the suspension (one front shock broke the upper mount and crashed into the engine).The roll even snapped off the spark plugs. The machines at that time (even new), were not worth the repair after an accident like that. I would imagine they are not much different today. My dad told me to leave the sled on the ice until I could afford to fix it. I did not suffer any long term injuries from the accident however, I was young. That sled... an underwater attraction. There's a reason why the insurance is so high, especially today. Speed is fun, but can kill you faster than you think you can go.

    That reminds me of when I almost died but didn't get a scratch. I was on a 2007 Dragon 700 racing a Skidoo 600 on the Saginaw Bay. I hit one of the pressure cracks where the ice pushes up on top of itself, luckily on the side that made a 3 - 4 foot ramp. I was hard on the brakes until I got to it then nailed the gas, launched it, and actually landed it. I looked down at the speedo when I landed it and was doing 86 mph! If the ice was pushed up the other way I would've died for sure!

    I've done the same. Not once but 9 times now since 2007. These rider forward platform sleds are dangerous when riding crusty snow. I've been riding sleds since 1979. The old sled designs would never do this. My 2007 yamaha phazer 500 4 stroke FX. I've crashed at 40 kmph and all the way up to 130kmph. It friggin comes out of nowhere. Not only crusty snow but slush is another pain in the ass that has crashed me. Wider skies really helped. Thats about the only fix thats helped.

    Interesting . Here in Southern MI we had 2" of snow it got up to 40F and rained.. the cooled off and snowed 8" On the Lake was either cold snow with slush underneath or a crust with slush underneath.
    My Skidoo 800 Renegade has Simmons II Powder skis.. the steering started jerking uncontrollably at 35 to 40 MPH.. It was a trip .. I could not hardly control the handle bars.. A situation where power steering would control it ..
    I decided to not go any faster on certain parts of the Lake because I did not want to crash like this guy. Made me want to check my ski toe.

      Explain to me why the hell you were going 80 test riding a sled that's that's downright stupid ever heard of the saying you break it you buy it they would have made you buy it whether you wanted it or not!

    Hard to tell what skis are on it but the dual runner pilot skis create so much drag and dig into the snow so bad that I can see this happening, I changed mine out for the newer DS-2 single runner skis that are a lot smoother on the bottom and create a lot less drag. I was afraid of having this same accident happen to me, my 07 Summit would break through the crust instead of riding on top of it.

    • @BasementProductions4
      @BasementProductions4  2 роки тому

      You know I never thought of that. The pilot skis do suck in the deep snow.

      @@BasementProductions4 2 years on the DS-2 skis and I will never go back, with the dual runner pilot skis my sled would just dive into the snow for no reason it tossed me off a couple times at slow speeds I was afraid to push it very fast for that reason. The DS-2 single runner skis stay on top of the snow and have way less drag it seems, I would bet that is what happened in this accident.

    Gotta be careful on sleds boys. Few years ago a friend and his older brother was sledding in north central Pa and running at night. Younger brother comes around a bend in trail to find his older brother ran into an unexpected tree that had fallen across the trail and broke his neck n died! Imagine the heartache...

    25 plus years ago, my buddy and I were going through a field maybe 80-90km/hr, not a lot of snow on the ground hit a frozen ground knot in the farmer's field, he flew off the machine and pile drived his head into the frozen ground, shattered his helmet, broke his neck, I watched him fly through the air right in front of me, I missed the ground knot by 6 inches to the left, sold my machine the following week...
    He was permanently paralysed from the chest down, then he got double jabbed last year and died 2 weeks later with blood clots on his brain...

      it was due to the snow conditions. It seemed hard and crusty, so when he lifted his hand, they ski hooked under the crust layer of snow. You can hear how hard the snow was at the end when they are walking.
