- Obtained this copy from an inner-circle CDR created by Mickey. Features proper speed and no hiss, as well as being natural volume. For those wondering, yes, this is Ween. They didn't like Beck very much but were asked to do this cover by Elektra in 1996 as part of a "one hit wonders covering other one hit wonders" compilation CD called "Wonderama". The CD was never finished and the submissions are mostly lost to time, however Ween's submission was a piss-take of Loser which Ween hijacks into their own synth jam.

One of the few times Ween were forced to comply with their label's demands, and they make this. They didn't need to convince me that they were the greatest band of all time any more than they already do, they really didn't. Still glad they did though.
The synths on this remind me of the ones at about 2:20 on Polka Dot Tail. It all adds up that it's from the same time period too. I remember back in the day everyone claiming this was fake, nice to see it's actually Ween!
Not really surprising they took the piss on this song considering the backstory implies that Elektra was back-handedly writing them off as one hit wonders through asking them to appear on the CD. Can't imagine that inspiring confidence

Most likely. It wasn't their only charting single but it was the big MTV hit that everyone could name. Ocean Man hadn't yet come along to take the crown of "Ween's Signature Song"

Interestingly, the first time I played Beck for the good friend of mine who turned me on to Ween in 1992 said "it sounds like they are trying to copy Ween". And it was true.

Read the description! The story is pretty funny. Sounds so weird because Ween didn't like Beck and did everything they could to fuck over the label.
Just thought it was funny considering how much debate there was on whether or not this was legitimate lol. I didn't even think it was real.
I really hope there is some more electronic stuff in Weens vault like what they do at the end there, because it always hits when they go there.
even if the story is true, I just know Golden Feelings is one of the brownest albums I've heard. getting into Beck at 16 prepared me to be a huge ween fan at 27 when i started listening to them.
Elektra treated ween like shiet.
I wouldnt be surprised if they didnt like Beck, not really as a personal thing but how being seen as too close as an act and wanting to keep distance. sorta like how people compared them to They Might Be Giants which they didnt care for. but Gener has gone to TMBG shows and I believe enjoys them.

I'm a bit surprised Ween don't like Beck, especially early/mid 90's era Beck. "Stereopathetic Soul Manure" & "Mellow Gold" are kinda similar to "The Pod" & "Chocolate and Cheese"
@@heyhonpuds from what I’ve seen Aaron especially hated Beck. He hid that hatred in interviews and stuff but there’s a lot of live quotes and instances of hatred towards him.

@@lucvaillancourt8580 live in Lincoln 1999 and Montreal 1999. The first example is that Claude and Glenn started jamming the song “Where it’s at” live and Aaron screamed at them to “stop with the Beck bullshit, fuck that” and that he should fine them. The other time was a show’s power was cut and the PA system started playing “Where It’s At” and Aaron had the exact same response of getting really upset and asking them to “turn the fucking Beck off Jesus Christ”. Those are both exact transcribed quotes.

@@weenarchive I can totally see why actual junkie rockers of the 90’s would be pissed towards beck. Especially the loser song. I like that general album but it does feel like someone singing about something they don’t experience. Like at all.
@@Jummugest yeah, and another thing is that the label was somewhat forcing them to do this cover. Forced to do a cover of a hit song of an artist they dislike while being humiliated and labeled as a “one hit wonder”. Definitely would make me petty.
