+TTundragrizzly I agree. Given the choice I'd take both. If I could only have one I'd take the bear spray. That offers the best odds of getting out alive and intact... but no guarantee.
TTundragrizzly in theory you would have to wait for the bear to be VERY CLOSE if it's windy. Both is ok...but if I'm not a good shooter I'd stick to spray, hand sea flares and keep a nice big knife at hand firmed to my wristle.

@@alvaroq2024 No, it really isn't common sense. It's sensible to move slowly and on guard, but acting calmly will not necessarily deter a bear. The fact that this bear is acting aggressively toward humans at such a young age is disconcerting, to say the least. It would be wise to have a weapon - a real weapon - just in case.
Well that looked like a bear thats been frightened away by humans and fed fish by humans..so he is just frying to figure out what kind of human you are! One that gives up fish or one that fires a warning shot
Good job. You stayed together, avoided eye contact, made noise and didn't run. Pepper spray has been shown to be more effective in these types of encounters than guns. Textbook.
Hello buddy. I'm just meeting today about an expedition test in Svalbard in the summer. Different considerations with PBs. I may be stateside this summer too. Bell ya next week.
Frank Coles From a statistical perspective the conclusions of the studies comparing bear spray to guns is NOT valid. There was no randomization in the selection process of the two groups. It's possible that people with guns are hunting, and most with spray are hiking? As such, the intentions, locations, behaviors (of both humans and bears), as well as time of the season, of the encounters, are likely to be quite different. Also it's possible that hikers in general report encounters at a lower rate... or a higher rate, then hunters. Without properly randomizing the groups, any conclusion about bear spray being more or less effective than guns, is just not valid even though the may authors claim otherwise.
Thanks for the response Pstimac. The studies were based on all reported bear attacks, if memory serves. Do you have a stats background? Be interesting to know how else to configure a comparison.
Undergrad in math 25 years ago. I took my required stats classes. They where my favorites along with combinatorics. Anyway, stats (or the math behind the science of causation) really should be required in high schools. It's no more complicated than high school algebra. Anyway, to get a valid comparison, randomly select a certain number of people (enough to satisfy your confidence interval), give 1/4 of them bear spray, give another 1/4 bear spray and a bow tag, give another 1/4 a 44 mag, and give the last 1/4 a bow tag and a 44 mag. Send 'em out in grizzly country for equal amounts of time hiking and hunting, same general location, same time of year.... lather, rinse, repeat until you have enough grizzly encounter data to satisfy what ever confidence interval you determine is appropriate. While doing something like this is possible, it's not really feasible (or ethical.) Instead people all too often rely on these reverse-data-look-up type studies which can be really misleading. If more people took stats, more people would realize this.
Perfect behavioral response. Great job. I'm particularly impressed that you knew when to retreat and when to hold your ground. The only thing I would have added is a high-caliber firearm. A determined brown bear will not always be deterred by bear spray. A harassing one, yes, one determined to kill, no.
I'd run towards it with a knife in one hand and an axe in the other. They know what to do if you're scared or aggressive--but not if you're crazy. And I'd be yelling, too.
Why? That bear spray works great. No reason to kill a bear and no way you are hitting a charging bear that close with a rifle. You are in their environment be responsible.

+Dan Stephens I personally would have my glock 20, as well, But i would def have bear spray as a first option because its easier to use and allot more effective, A good can of spray will make a huge orange cloud almost like a fire extinguisher and will completely blind, disorientate and deter the bear. A fire arm is easier to miss and doesnt give the same immediate effect always, its hard to hit a charging bear. .454 casul is one heft round, but bears in alaska can be big! Almost to where u need a high power rifle and very precise shot placement to take one down. Would liek to see a flashlight like attachment for handguns that has a bear spray...So i can drawn my hang gun in the woods and have the option to use spray first then firearm only if necessary. I can defiantly see a big bear charging you taking gun shots and still killing you, maybe hell die after from bleeding out, but you didnt stop him. On the other hand I cannot imagine even the biggest bear charging through a orange cloud of pepper spray. Not only will it make even the biggest bears run away crying like a baby, hell be blind, youll be able to hide from it and escape

u go to prison for a very long time for shooting a grizzly bear , they have been a protected species for many years , u dont have time to pull out a rifle , when a grizzly is charging you attacking , a hand gun isn't used for hunting the bear , it's for fast protection from a close up bear , & yes a 44 magnum handgun or a 50 cal handgun will drop a grizzly, if it's coming at u attacking , I have lived in the Yukon for over 40 years & own many rifles

Bees? Cows? What you are doing is called "ignoratio elenchi" in latin. We are talking about BEARS here. Do I trust the research of one of the must respected magazine and societies on the nature field? Do I trust the statistics of the experts that happened to actually work with bears, and have evidence of what they are saying, Rather that a random guy that talks about chatting or drinking tea with bears,You bet I do. You were right about something, the discussion is over , i would say null.
It truly amazes me that people still go out into these areas where they know there is a good possibility to see these animals and yet they dont bring self-defense. Doesn't make sense. Makes me wonder if they ever really considered what it would be like to be eaten alive by a Grizzly.
That's a inexperienced, younger, curious bear, that made no charge or from what you could hear wasn't jaw smacking. Wasn't hunting. Not aggresive. Had it been older, bigger that spray would've been useless.
Yep. A bear's nasal passages are extremely sensitive. Pepper spray can actually stop an attacking bear in its tracks and send it into shock temporarily.
AJ Miller Bear mace? Are you a fucking idiot, or have you never been around these animals. First off once the bear decides to charge the adrenaline hits it before you even get mace anywhere near it by that the time the spray works on a charge the bear is already in the process of ripping you apart. This is why people who live in areas populated by bear carry guns, this is why guides carry guns, and this why my family who lives in Eagle River, Alaska carry guns. And you wont side them with a pistol smaller than a 460 s&w out on hikes
Blake Pilkenton You're an idiot aha, and an idiot who has obviously never been involved with bears. People who live in areas populated with bears OUTSIDE OF AMERICA use bear spray and it works fine. You don't need to shoot and kill the animal for being an animal.
Blake Pilkenton Shut the fuck up. You probably live in some close knit, clean cut neighborhood. Probably haven't fired a gun in your life. Bear spray works. It reaches out to within 30 feet, it's backed by hunters, learn your shit.
As a life long alaskan you needed to be way more aggressive and let that bear know your the alpha. Quietly saying "go on bear" while walking away only made him bolder.
I swear I can hear your heart beating. I didn't know if it was mine or yours, so I paused the video to see. It was def your heart beating. That's so cool, I never heard that in a video before. How is that even possible to hear lol. Of course, everyone hearts would be beating fast and hard in that situation, I just wasn't expecting to hear it. Or am I sensing it? Idk shit, but glad yall are ok
Back pedaling too fast can cause the bear to instinctively follow. When they hold their ground at 0:34 to 0:47 and then again at 1:20 to 1:38 in the video, the bear soon stops advancing and it doesn't take much to spook it and run it off. Of course every encounter is different, and every bear is different, but this one appears to be a young coastal brown bear, probably 3 years old, in good shape, and likely on its first year without its mama. They're easier to bluff than an big old boar or a sow with cubs.
good job , i shot many bear and sprayed also , spray a bear any day before shoot a bear . bear spray works 90% shooting 50% , I have sprayed bears so bad they didnt know where they were at , yet shooting them they just keep coming at you 4 rifles going off no stopping them . Good educational video for those who dont know better
RandomX856 funny! There was an example on the news recently where a young bear walked into a ranger station and started to over turn a garbage can, you can hear a ranger say " Don't do that bear, don't knock over that can, don't you do it." His tone was not ferocious or intimidating, he spoke in a casual tone and the bear didn't knock over the can. How do you imagine that the first animals were domesticated? Maybe you think that God gave us cows, pigs and goats to do as we will?
joe cancelli ...mace is JUST as effective? Yeah? So if I told you I was going to drop you and your wife and kids into a pit with a hungry bear, and you could pick either some bear spray or a high powered rifle, you'd pick the spray...right?
Mace is absolutely not as affective as a gun. Get the fuck out of here with that. Watch the movie backwoods and tell me you’d rather have bear mace. That’s easily the stupidest comment I’ve ever seen. Bear mace just seasons you for the bear.
Surprisingly, bears do understand English. But, soothingly chanting "go on bear," isn't going to cut it. "Go on" and do what? "Go on" and attack? "Go on" and eat us? Yes, have spray. Yes, have a gun. But first, tell the animal what you want and what are your intentions. The word is very powerful and allows all to deescalate. Bears know the rules better than you. Man has dominion. Doesn't mean a lion won't eat a human, but the lion knows the price better than you. And the lion or bear often only needs reminding. Carry and use weapons as necessary, but use the clear word first, if possible. "Go on" is not the clear word.
Id just run up to it and scare it away, love to see that bear try that shit with me, i dont need a weapon, im the type of guy that gets a 50 killstreak on cod every match
Yeah ya gotta love bear mace and stick stories , mace aahhh OK I've heard both good and bad , I'm always armed in the woods , I'm the eldest. Not only will it make even the biggest bears run away crying like a baby, hell be blind, youll be able to hide from it and escape
yes "respect its right to live" as a fucking bear is tearing the flesh off your face.
That “bear” was their best friend acting out his childhood dream!
I don't think the bear can hear well....he think ur saying COME ON BEAR...lol
going to the grizzly woods with a pepper spray... you are just bear food... priceless
Hardly aggressive. seemed more curious about what you may taste like
The bear has a slight hearing problem.. The bear thinks he's saying "COME ON BEAR" 🐻
This is why i always have a picture of crooked hillary with me. I pull it out everyone runs
I would truly hate to see tweedle dee and tweedle dumb in a true situation.
bear spray & a 44 magnum handgun , i wouldnt walk around with any less
+kawika dav 357 isnt big enough , u want somethin thats almost guaranteed to put the bear down one shot ,50 cal would b ideal but there pretty heavy to pack around all day
The main reason I would choose a 44 over a 357 or 50 is because before I shoot the bear I always like to utter "do you feel lucky punk?"
u go to prison for a very long time for shooting a grizzly bear , they have been a protected species for many years , u dont have time to pull out a rifle , when a grizzly is charging you attacking , a hand gun isn't used for hunting the bear , it's for fast protection from a close up bear , & yes a 44 magnum handgun or a 50 cal handgun will drop a grizzly, if it's coming at u attacking , I have lived in the Yukon for over 40 years & own many rifles
I would’ve ran up there grab him by the throat and threw his ass in the lake.
@Rara Neagra that was a dirty harry joke and no i dont think you should stand in front of a bear and say that...
I realized after a little he was saying Go On Bear to help calm himself too...like a mantra hahaha
1:53 I like how he started talking shit once the bead left lol
All you had to do is if you threw him a couple sandwiches you would have had a friend for life.
Aggressive or inquisitive? Everytime you held your ground he showed submission and avoidance (turning sideways, looking away).
If he was aggressive he would be eating human seasoned with pepper.
Yes he is looking for potential food , but humans are not part of their diet if they havent learned to do so. Quote from Natinoal Geographic "The chances of being injured by a bear are approximately 1 in 2.1 million, according to the National Park Service (Yellowstone). In other words, you're more likely to be killed by a bee than a bear. news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/09/150916-bears-attacks-animals-science-north-america-grizzlies/
+Still Pop the quote says injured. Nobody is talking about cows here.
Bees?
Thats Why you Carry High Cal Weaponry.
It looked to me like a curious youngster. But, I would have taken just as much care as these guys did.
he's being really aggressive. Stalking them. Definitely an extremely dangerous situation.
It truly amazes me that people still go out into these areas where they know there is a good possibility to see these animals and yet they dont bring self-defense. Doesn't make sense. Makes me wonder if they ever really considered what it would be like to be eaten alive by a Grizzly.
He thought you were saying, “come here bear” I think what we have here was a failure to communicate
That's a inexperienced, younger, curious bear, that made no charge or from what you could hear wasn't jaw smacking. Wasn't hunting. Not aggresive. Had it been older, bigger that spray would've been useless.
actually sprays are quite effective
Yep. A bear's nasal passages are extremely sensitive. Pepper spray can actually stop an attacking bear in its tracks and send it into shock temporarily.
A^2 tell that to Todd orr
Kaiser Frost A shotgun could stop it too
+Ellison Rodgers I saw Bears runaway so fast from sprays that the can wasn't over and there was no Bears left in 5 miles
This should be called: “Passive aggressive ‘Go on Bear’”
I always grab my bug spray over my rifle when I go into bear territory too!
Maybe aerosol anti-perspirent? Won't stop a bear attack, but the person will smell good while they die.
I prefer bug spray over a rifle, too. Unless I'm in bear country. Then I take bear spray.
and then you realize as a bear is eating you that you brought the bug spray instead of the bear spray.
I know this video is old but I can't resist adding my 2 cents. That bear is young, dumb, and full of HUNGRY! You 2 fellas are lucky!
This is why I like air horns along with bear spray. Wind can be at your face and you can still use an air horn and use it sooner and more often.
Who goes into bear country with mace and a stick?
It's bear mace, most likely.
Blake Pilkenton Bear mace, son. And it ain't no joke.
Blake Pilkenton
You're an idiot aha, and an idiot who has obviously never been involved with bears.
That language will imprint and decrease overall bear attacks
As a life long alaskan you needed to be way more aggressive and let that bear know your the alpha. Quietly saying "go on bear" while walking away only made him bolder.
Air horn will usually run a bear off. If not, I run my vacuum cleaner!
And by aggressive we mean curious
get outta here with you disney bs.
Spray.... ?? Ya give me a backup gun!! Just in case the bear didn't want to go. Lol
DEAR GOD HE BARE(ly) GETS OUT ALIVE......THIS THING IS BEYOND AGGRESSIVE, ITS DOWN RIGHT INSANE. I COULD HARDLY WATCH , IT'S NEARLY (Un)BEAR(able)
Hardly aggressive, the bear is inquisitive.
I can hear his heartbeat with my headphones. Fucking crazy.
Replace the stick with a rifle 💯. Protect yourselves. The bears do.
I felt that "Get the fuck outta here."
good job , i shot many bear and sprayed also , spray a bear any day before shoot a bear . bear spray works 90% shooting 50% , I have sprayed bears so bad they didnt know where they were at , yet shooting them they just keep coming at you 4 rifles going off no stopping them .
Good educational video for those who dont know better
Thanks, I've wondered about the effectiveness of spray myself.
I'm glad that stick made you feel safer, because if you had hit him with that, you would have just pissed him off.
How do you know he's aggressive? You see a curious bear that stays at a distance ... Nothing more.
This guy understands bears don't speak english right?
RuleofFive animals understand us, maybe better than we understand ourselves.
Please don't ever have children, Joan.
Always one idiot in s bear video to make this joke.
I would have done my joe dirt reverse psychology yelling "I like bears chargin at me and turning my body into bear shit don't bother me none!...."
"Get the fuck out of here".....but the bear isn't the one wandering in someone else's backyard...
He was just following the fish smell or trying to see if they had any fish bears are smart
That is the smallest bear spray cannister that I've ever seen.
your all so gun happy mace is just as effective without having to kill a curious cub
You carry and use both. If you have any part of a brain.
Every try and use bear mace inside dense understory? Or out in an open area on a windy day? I'll take a 3" slug over mace any day.
joe cancelli ...mace is JUST as effective?
I would need a roll of toilet paper after that.....
Why the Royal fuck would u wanna put your life in that much danger to catch fish!! Lol wow
Id never walk around in bear country without at least a 10mm and 15 rounds
Dude sounds like me telling my needy dog to give me a little break lol.
I don't know how you guys were so calm at least way more calm than I would ever be lol... I felt as if I was there with you
If you walk away from a bear it follows you.
Id just run up to it and scare it away, love to see that bear try that shit with me, i dont need a weapon, im the type of guy that gets a 50 killstreak on cod every match
Well in all defense of the bear, the guy was holding that can of bear spray like I hold a bag of treats for my dog.
Yeah ya gotta love bear mace and stick stories , mace aahhh OK I've heard both good and bad ,
I'm always armed in the woods , I'm the eldest. Son so it's up to me to kinda raise
The little people when mom and pop are busy, and up here in northern MN
I carry at sawed off
Double barrel in a quiver on my back
The great equalizer
First and only video I have seen where someone actually had bear spray accessible like you are supposed to. 👍
That’s not an aggressive grizzly. Just curious.
Famous last words.
Aggressively walking along a river bank, not for the faint hearted.
You need to be armed with an Uzi, when walking around the Alaskan countryside. It's more dangerous than Compton!
Bryce Pasta stop reading bullshit online made by delusional treehuggers, you spray a fucking bear with a uzi hes gonna run away 10x faster than he would with bear spray while pissing blood all over the place and covered in holes
@ The Troll
More dangerous than Compton, not even close.
Now I know you are a troll.
an FN para would be more effective.
What would you rather have in bear country 1. A big stick 2. a can of bear spray 3. A big gun?
In no way was that bear aggressive. Curious, maybe. But not aggressive.
mgwest949 that bear was stalking them and waiting for one ☝️ of them to run 🏃! It was more hungry for something to eat than curious in my opinion!
You sound calm, but your heart rate is close to 130bpm
you guys are legends and far braver than I am. hope you have plenty more amazing adventures out there without the need for firearms!
The bear was merely curious. Not a threat at all.
Chances of a bear attack are low because the millions of people living in the city the chance is zero. Encounters with bears are extremely dangerous.
