Battery Spot Welder Sunko 737B for making battery packs

- I bought the cheapest battery spot welder for making up battery packs and thought I would show you how it works.
I make a new battery pack for the Nagra-D and spot weld some coin cell batteries but It could be useful for many types of batteries.
this video is not sponsored by anyone as I purchased this from Amazon myself.
My Sunkko 737 came in a few months ago, and I had no idea what the holder with the magnets was for -- thanks for telling! My application is rebuilding rechargeable battery packs for old HP and TI calculators from the 70s.
A Frend Oh I love the old HP and Ti calculators . i had so many of them but a few years ago i sold a lot to a friend who also collects them.
I took electronics in high school 15 years ago and I love watching your videos. Always fascinating stuff. Thanks for the great content ! Cheers from Toronto Canada!
TheGosling8 I wish my school had a choice of electronics. it was things like football , religious education , geography , nothing that i require in my later life. i did electronics as a hobby when i was a kid and I am still learning today and its great fun and always interesting. best wishes from the UK.
You did it!- new battery packs for my Nagra V and I'm off and running
I have found that 14 AWG Solid Copper House wire works quite well for electrodes on the welder.
Very helpful Marcus! Nice to see what machine is needed and the process used. Think I might snag one and add it to my garage shop! Never know when you'll need one!
Marshal Arnold Yes a handy device indeed, I have a nice battery drill with a dodgy battery and I know its only 4x 18650 batteries in a plastic box but the replacement would cost me £45 . i can remake it for about £5 now. this thing will easily buy itself in a very few jobs.
@@markusfuller yeah, I have a vintage laptop that's a similar story. For obvious reasons used packs are almost $200.00! This will surely help me out with getting it powered via battery again!
I would recommend buying the 220V version. You have to look to find them, but Amazon has them. Of course you have to supply 220VAC.
Brilliant, I always wanted to know how good these are. And there are a lot of options. I prefer that hand piece since lifting the entire pack for every weld looks a bit inconvenient to me. Oh please, put some safety goggles on when you weld. You never know when one tiny little glowing piece of metal is going to fly into your eye, and threre should not be a "first time" ever.
Chip Guy Vids Hi Chip Guy Vids . I was wearing safety goggles every time i zapped but I should have mentioned that in the vid.
@@markusfuller Yay :)
What a great little device. Nice purchase Markus! 👍🏼
Jakob Haq Thanks Jakob. im searching around for all the things that need new battery packs now. power-drill just takes 4 batteries but the pack is really expensive so i will just buy the individual cells and make one now. oh how i love having the tools to make things yourself. happy new year
@@markusfuller Loads of videos showing how to upgrade power tools to Li-on as well :)
Spikey DaPikey Thanks Spikey I will go and check some of those out as i can bring life back to several things i have around now.
Brilliant! Next project, make a replica of the wart pulling chair, you can use this to spot weld the joins! :)
You could always use a hot melt glue gun to hold the batteries in place, then tape them for a belt and braces job.
Very interesting as I have a Nagra D in my collection of Nagra.
Ashley Booth Hi Ashley I love nagra gear but nagra don’t seem to like me. they say i’m an amateur hobbyist putting peoples safety at risk. I just don’t think they like it when someone shows how to save lots of money and make battery packs themselves. but I do actually like the products especially the older products.
Great video Markus, Happy New Year!
Stephen S Thanks Stephen. happy new year to you also.
For 2032s why not just fit a PCB holder? They don't take up that much more roon than the welded tag batteries. At least it's always worked for me so far. Makes total sense for the big battery packs though.
There's cases where you don't have room for a holder, sadly. For example Tascam DA-xx's were a bugger for having tabbed cells, often soldered to vias on the board near the casing (yeah really), and synths with layered boards often put the battery anywhere they could due to limitations, space is sometimes really tight, dunno why they make it so, but it's a thing.
WIth the ability to spot weld and heatshrink, you can pretty much do a factory job.
Because most holders pins are wider than the battery pins.
But, you can add stiff wire to the legs to match the spacing and glue/double sided tape the holder in position. Depending on the space available to you.
@@RuinBird That is fine for domestic/ home use - but not suitable if you are gigging and the device is going to be moved about regularly.
Could use one myself as there's a few tasks I keep putting off but this would make them a breeze!
Btw; Australian viewers can find them on eBay for as low as AU $160 with free delivery!
MrWombatty I did think of building one but it may have cost more and looked terrible. sometimes its just easier to go ahead and buy one. at least theres a years guarantee with it.
Thanks!
Thumbs up Indiana USA.
Truth Seeker many thanks from UK
:)!
Thanks for the video, excellent work ! I hjave a quick question, I have
this one and I would like to install a welding pen so it is more
flexible and I can spot weld large battery packs with an hand held pen.
What is your recommentation? Just connect 2 copper cables to the
terminals ?
thanks for u video but what standard Amp with timer for spot welding ?
No BMS with balancing?
How would one spot weld wider packs? Or is that not possible with this? 10s of cells width and depth for example
Looks great
zer0Bot Thank you
Happy New Year Markus! Great vid - Im sure you could do laptop battery packs as a side business!
Would you not replace the coin-cell batteries with a modern holder rather than welding the cells in (making it a pain to replace in the future all over again)? Anyway, here is to a great 2019 for you and Jason!
mCKENIC Hi and happy new year to you also. yes I do often replace coincells with a holder but you have given me an idea as i have an old laptop that only works with the charger plugged in so i may hack the battery pack and sort that out 👍 . i certainly have a battery drill that needs doing as the replacements are real expensive.
on top there's a pot to set the pressure of the spring tips
squalazzo Hi sorry I thought i may have mentioned that in the video at some point, maybe i cut it out when editing as I am always trying to keep the videos short as possible.
@@markusfuller i may have skipped that part, sorry, but worth to mention in case :)
With the footswitch plugged in, does it override the need to activate the weld by pushing up the assembly in your hand to activate the weld? By this I mean could you apply pressure to get comfortable with the battery and strip in place and then activate via the pedal?
Regardless, happy new year Markus hope you had a fun silly season, always enjoy your vids no matter if it's synth / repair / doing stuff. So long as you are enjoying making the vids, it's all good :)
#mousesignature
Neffers Hi Neffers I’m not sure to be honest. I guess the unit activates when a footswitch is used wether you are using little or lots of force on the pins. there is a control on the top above the pins that you can set the pressure needed to activate the weld . i think its variable between 200 to 700 grammes force.
Oh and after this we will get Nagra moaning at you again!
ianmedium Their gear is good but the people behind nagra seem obnoxious and act as if they are so superior. plus we can buy far cheaper gear now that is still very professional.
What's the price difference between the two big batteriepacks?
GameBreaker the one i made cost me about £40uk (in cells) but the replacement I only found one stated as nagra-d replacement at $700usd but I could not find one on the nagra website.
@@markusfuller That's an impressive cost reduction, thank you for the answer.
Says it's 800A at max but it's nowhere near that. It can't even do 0.15mm nickel strips. Also it's Sunkko.

James Bennett Could not resist that one 🤣
Why not just reuse the yellow plastic and tape it up...
iNerdier I thought of that but it was after i had already started taping up the batteries in the orange flameproof tape. though it may have looked neater i guess.
Why?

I have a dead microwave, hmmm......
Spikey DaPikey Theres the main part you have already :-)
