I worked at Yahoo from 2007-2013. Many of the employees were amazing. Intelligent, creative and hard working. A big part of their downfall was their inability to leverage their talent. Things were lost during the turmoil of constant CEO turnover and internal reorganizations. While I was there, we had 4 or 5 different CEOs and I had literally 11 different bosses.
Their Social Justice Warrior Writers have disenfranchised their mostly republican base. My dad and me both quit using the site because they constantly support Democrat narratives. Then they cause dissent by taking peoples ability to comment. Yahoo is offiicially dead
Lol, I don't think Napster would've been drinking buddies with the others. =) MySpace, AOL, and Yahoo were corporations that were obsessed with growing rather than end user experience. Napster was a hobbyist project that was forced to shut down not by lack of popularity but by record companies. It would popularize P2P technology. It's co-founder (Sean Parker) would move on to help grow Facebook and Spotify. MySpace, AOL, and Yahoo deserved to die while Napster's legacy still lives on with torrents and Spotify.
@Yasuke ϟ Kildall would never have been Gates. He wasn't ruthless enough and was petty in business dealing. Even if he won early on eventually he would have failed.
I looked it up. 225 million people still use yahoo mail. But idk if that means they just have a yahoo mail account and use another mailing service or what but that’s still amazing anyone still uses yahoo mail
@@dadbodii I still use my Yahoo mail. Mostly because it was my first email and thus, most of my subscriptions , bills etc. are set with that email. It's just too much of a hassle changing them all. I do have 3 emails though. Yahoo is for my personal things such as bills, accounts, etc. My Gmail is for my personal "fun" accounts like games, youtube, etc. Outlook is for work/school.
I agree with everything said apart from one SMALL detail: huge companies with a diversified portfolio should not be doomed to fail by default. You mentioned Google. Google got their hands pretty much everywhere. Many of their ventures fail as soft drink makers know that 7 out of 10 new drinks they launch will never make money. So, what is wrong with Yahoo? You kind of said it. Here it is yet in another form: people, companies, and countries should never have a RIGID approach to things. Not being able to back off from a hill conceived idea could be an alarming sign of a leader with a rigid personality. If that is a kind of 'company culture', then i won't be surprised at Yahoo's demise. Thanks for your accurate and concise analysis.
Had no idea that they were THAT big during the early 00's. What a fall from grace. I was a user of Flickr when they bought it. It quickly turned to a bloated mess with ads.
Not sure if you're joking or not. But no. Google comes from a misspelling of the word googol which represents a large number in mathematics. I think it's 10 to the power of 100.
I like it. The host is bright and friendly and explains things very well. It’s also well written and engaging without being too clever or self satisfied.
I was on the understanding it was a sort of nepotism and the insistence Marissa Mayer was seen as the golden queen whom could do no wrong and would deliver success success success but there was a catch, she wasn’t actually that good and couldn’t deliver, she’d just been lucky, being in the right place at the right time with the right mentor whom wanted to / insisted that she be delivered to the top of the corporate world 🌍 and what happens when the wrong person gets to the top 😬
I really loved Yahoo Answers I was an active member there Its sad but all things end Even youtube is aproaching its end (very soon) They already ruined the original idea with "redesigns" of the interface and copyright censorship.
The name is still there the same way AOL is. But it’s just a brand name at this point, the same way RCA or Westinghouse are just brand names. Obviously the company circling the drain still had some value as VZ bought them for $5B which while much less than they were at their peak is still not inconsequential.
I like Yahoo Finance (it's not a subject matter that I find very interesting yet somehow they magically keep me entertained with it). And I was disappointed by the demise of Yahoo Screen because I liked Other Space, and it could have been an auspicious new focus for the brand.
I mean, a lot of these "bad decisions" just seem like basic corruption. The early sell-off of Ali Baba shares, for instance. There was plenty of money made from these decisions, but very little of it was made by Yahoo itself.
I remember thinking it was genius that Yahoo! allowed you to use several services under one login ID. Not sure if they're the first to do this but it's the first I saw at least.

I still login to any of my apps like fb, insta etc using my yahoo mail...
Same, i love their email app. Very convenient
Lesson learned, when I'll have the possibility I'll buy Google
You better!
Until today, I never really gave yahoo a thought after I dumped them in 2010.

Yahoo will be taken over or out of business at the pace they are going.

The early innovators couldn't keep up with the younger generation. I hope that happens with Facebook. It'll only happen if its broken up though.
