in this game, southgate did what fans and pundits wanted him to do… and we won - press higher, move the ball quicker, players making runs, earlier subs, take off kane for watkins. fair play to southgate for being proactive.
Mainoo was unreal! Really helped fodens game by getting him the ball quick.

If we’re being honest Mainoo is the reason performance has increased. Links play in every phase and is progressive at the right times.

Bobby Robson is beloved for reaching a semi-final. Southgate’s record even if England lose on Sunday is far, far better.

So the issue is we have been incredibly lucky to play weaker teams most of the time in tournaments. Once we meet strong opposition we tend to lose. We have the most expensive team in the competition. I think Southgate has helped the reputation of the team and seems like a nice guy. But I'd prefer the next manager to be a bit more dangerous for other teams. Someone like Pep would be great.
@@benry007 that’s the talking point but England historically have gone out/not qualified against “weaker teams” (Romania 2000, Iceland 2016 etc) Plus that is how football works, when two good teams play each other one has to lose.
Look I’ve been as critical as anyone about Southgate but his record in tournaments and qualification speaks for itself. England have had managers far more qualified than him with comparible players who haven’t done nearly as well.

I feel this England squad extremely difficult to play against. They're incredibly composed and yesterday they could finally play against a team good enough to play counterattacking football. So fully agree with your view that the tactic suits facing better opposition: the tactic makes games against bad sides dull but it somehow worked well yesterday.
The Dutch MF were essentially nonexistent. Rodri, Ruiz and Olmo are going to be a very different prospect.

IF England can put in a performance against Spain similar to last night's, there's every reason to be optimistic.
Despite the fabulous possession-play and intricate inter-positionality, this Spain (like even the best Spanish teams) don’t actually score many goals against top opposition. Versus France, it was a beastie from Yamal and a deflection. On another day they don’t win the game. Because it’s a final you’re expected to go all guns blazing but if England can just choke and stifle for that first 30 mins, it might just begin to look like anyone’s game. It might not be a classic of the beautiful game, but I do see ways that England can win.
You think back to some legendary England cock-ups in the past. Was it 2010, Germany 4 England 1? They went in 2-1 down and grumpy because Lampard’s shot was 2 foot over the line but didn’t count, came out 2nd half and put on a hopelessly unprofessional head banging display and lost 4-1 to breakaway goals. Doesn’t happen any more. ‘Under no circumstances will we be over-extended and picked off on the break’ is probably nailed on the dressing-room door. I personally am glad to see they’ve stopped all that gung-ho stuff and don’t mind if it requires sitting 10 yards deeper. So much of what Southgate has done just involves cutting out the bullshit and personality defects that have afflicted us in the past.

Most consistent top player in the side I’d say. Yesterday was his worst performance in a long time and he was still worth having on the pitch. Not the best player in the squad but definitely the first name on the team sheet.

I would much rather that Netherlands won as the Liverpool players actually got to play, even start, compared to Trent and Gomez in England. But I can't deny that England was the better team in the semi-final and deserved to win. That said. They have been dire all tournament before the semi-final and it would be an enormous travesty for them to win Euro 2024 over the much more entertaining, much more deserving, much more convincing Spain.

He was poor on the ball today tbf, but I don’t think he’s been poor with it all tournament. Definitely a bit of an off game for him, but still provided some stability for us defensively.

Love your stuff Lawrence but “maybe the Dutch have a little right to feel hard done” is English bias as hell. That penalty was soft as can be even the commentary, who was all English, was saying that’s pretty absurd of a call. Also the entire game was clear terrible reffing bias by a known match fixer. Just before the second England goal how did England get possession back? Welp they got it off an obviously wrong call on giving a goal kick off a header out that clearly went off Stones. I totally get it y’all are English that’s gonna be your squad but the Dutch were completely dominating the second half and definitely weren’t getting any help from the ref. Personally soured it for me quite a bit although I was very happy to see Ollie’s brilliance as he is still way to slept on for how talented he’s been the past few seasons.
Trouble with Kobbie is, he wanders a bit, not always in a good way. I suspect he’s giving Declan Rice the heeby-jeebies! So much of that role is positionality and shaping, doing good things on the ball doesn’t always get you out of trouble. Strange team Southgate has built! Don’t mind dropping and conceding possession, yet don’t really play fast counter-attacks. Happy to defend a 1-1 scoreline! And they’ve definitely gone off the idea of taking an early lead (they can’t hold onto a 1-0!), and no longer look like they’re going to wear themselves out after 30 mins. Doesn’t sound very positive does it? But never mind the quality, feel the width! When you’ve got Saka there’s always a chance coming. Be nice to win by more than 1 goal from time to time, though!
The reason England played better in the first half was Foden. He was all across the pitch and gave Mainoo a target. We look dangerous when Foden is doing his city stuff. When the Dutch packed the midfield we had no width and Foden and Bellingham had to come deeper. When you can’t pass through you have to beat players. Enter Cole Palmer and Watkins. Foden is brilliant with space and Palmer is brilliant at creating it. Not sure how but you need to have someone with legs upfront like Watkins and Palmer and Foden need to start. Bellingham offers less than Palmer.
Trent probably should play but not in midfield, and not with the rest of the team that Southgate feels have to play.
Not that Trippier deserves to be dropped but i think England are more balanced and able to stretch teams better if Shaw plays purely cos he can go on the outside and get crosses in.
There's still the issue where you can'y play all 3 of Kane, Foden and Bellingham and have them all thrive but we will see what happens come Sunday!
