Insecurity is to Blue Shift what Anomalous Materials is to Black Mesa - this chapter serves to accomplish the following in the storyline of Half-Life: (a) Introduce Barney’s workplace, job and colleagues to provide a sense of familiarity, normalcy, and camaraderie before it all goes south in order to increase the impact of the Resonance Cascade (b) Emphasize the scale of the facility by having Barney get to Sector G on-foot through extensive service tunnels and massive storage warehouses (c) Foreshadow and increase the tension and anticipation of the aforementioned accident by means of sporadic system crashes and malfunctioning equipment (d) Provide a dramatic and shocking payoff by way of an incredibly intense elevator sequence BM:BS delivers all these key moments and then some. The added dialogue, scripted sequences, detailed environments and density of workers just going about their day adds a ton to making the facility feel lived in and real, just like the introductory tram ride. The resulting extended length does not drag out the chapter to the point of boredom, but instead allows players to really embrace the brief “calm before the storm” before it all goes to hell. The little touches that will make long-time Half-Life fans smile with nostalgia are still there as a treat as well - jumping off the balcony to surprise the nearby scientist, watching Otis’ repeated but fruitless attempts to reach for his gun, listening to the scientists being snarky towards the guards and looking down on them. The elevator sequence is perfection in my eyes. We’ve all pushed sample GG-3883 into the Anti-Mass Spectrometer countless times and witnessed the resulting chaos through Gordon’s eyes - for me, I’m always curious as to how it might’ve looked to those who were not in the test chamber. And HECU Collective does a damn good job at illustrating and re-envisioning the event as Barney saw it. The tension before the elevator arrives at the train station is so thick you can cut it with a knife - the slow ratcheting up of Aslan Akhmetov’s intense music piece “Meta-Collide”, the flickering lights and rumble of the facility, the offhand comments about Anomalous Materials’ involvement, the Guards running full speed for Sector C, shotguns in hand, and the announcement system broadcasting an “extreme energy field hazard”. The release of this tension comes in the form of a spectacular train derail sequence that turns the dial on the HL:BS version up to 11 (I really appreciate that they kept the Guard attempting to wave down the train then diving out of the way, that was such a badass moment in the original game); the last scream of Patrice as she falls to her death is haunting and visceral. This is my favourite depiction of the Resonance Cascade in any Half-life game, period.

I like how one of the notes on Calhoun’s locker says, “Get Beer for Gordon.” I also saw a sticker of the Chumtoad on his locker. The Chumtoad is a cut NPC from Gearbox and Valve.
That's probably a reference to the easter egg in the original Blue Shift where if you shoot the box in Barney's locker enough times, it breaks and there is a Chumtoad inside.
@@yourfellowducky2712 The Chumtoad was supposed to be a criter/enemy(?) In the original Blue Shift, but ended up becoming an easter egg, or some stuffed toy as a gift to Barney's girl. I suppose.
Insecurity is probably the most accurate chapter description considering the comical amount of things going wrong a BM, Anyway here’s the highlight reel of things I want to say: I love how this campaign really makes you feel like your at the absolute BOTTOM of the Proverbial hierarchy at Black Mesa, with Gordon NPC’s were usually very cordial and friendly, At least after the RC, but with Barney You really get the sense that no one really respects or values the guards at the facility despite the fact that most of them essentially work 4 jobs (Security, maintenance team, secretaries, ext.) and are the only line of defense for the facility. It makes you feel Even more so than the base game that you were just a normal guy going through the daily grind, trying to survive an incomprehensible disaster… Also special shout out to unplugging that scientist’s laptop at 2:55 was freaking hilarious, nicely done Nut! Also also, Even more so than the main campaign the level of characterization You were able to get Barney through just moving your head is impeccable, especially Backing away from things like the computer malfunctions, Using the sink & hand dryers in the bathroom, the way You look at yourself one that scientist comments on your shirt being in-ironed And especially almost putting the screwdriver in the trash had me rolling Just nothing but compliments all around
Great observation on the guard/scientist relationship. Those guards really got looked down upon and they don't deserve it at all :( The voice of Sisk really helps sell how genuine and chill they are too, so that when they start getting into trouble it's so easy to sympathize with them. Glad you appreciate those little gestures I gave Barney. In my mind, he's like Gordon in the sense that he's a prankster, but he's more upfront with his displeasure of the science team's snobby-ness given that he's a guard.
The intro text during the tram ride also showed your main priorities as a security guard: High priority - protect equipment and materials Medium priority - protecting the scientists Lowest priority - ensure your own safety Yeah, your job description is basically telling you that your own well-being is not relevant.
I'm glad you appreciated that. Part of it was to make sure the song ended when the doors to the HE Particle labs opened, but part of it was to play it for laughs hah
The song timing should be done in engine honestly, this fit so perfectly the music should be 2 parts and transfer between lower volume repeat while dialogue is on and more intense when moving between places. its absolutely stunning the atmosphere it created
Yeah. It reminded me of the panicking scientists in the elevator after the Resonance Cascade in Unforeseen Consequences. Heartwrenchingly realistic voice acting
This frequent nodding whenever an NPC ask you something, as well as dicking around, helps to showcase all the various interaction outcomes but at the same time seem so me like a divorce from your usual style of narrative and immersive play. Unless of course your intention all along is to portray Barney as a hyperactive prankster with an itchy trigger finger, which is equally cool.
Yeah, definitely intentional. I wanted to portray Barney as a prankster, just like Freeman, but a bit more aggressive and with a "take no shit" attitude, especially since he's a guard that is constantly looked down upon by the science team. You'll notice that I went after the scientist who threatened the clerk about his emails by unplugging his laptop (Barney standing up for his buddy), and pullling some other pranks. But I tried not to take it too far - for instance I was messing with the guard with the screwdriver but gave it back to him at the end - had I not he would've been shocked by electricity as he no longer has the tool. Of course the intent is also to showcase as much of the optional interactions as possible too. Hopefully I didn't go too far with this. The increased nodding was an attempt by me to make him more human - in my Black Mesa playthrough it often seemed like I wasn't acknowledging NPCs that were giving me direction so that's why I'm doing it more.
@@Sexy_Nutellaif you work at a top secret research facility and it happens to be May 16th in the 2000’s and every starts braking maybe just prepare for unforeseen consequences
That's what makes the environments of Half Life games (including, and I would say especially so, Black Mesa) so fantastic: they ARE believable settings, since all of them are places like utility rooms, laboratories, warehouses, offices, living quarters, etc. Each piece of the environment in all of these different locations has realistic practicality and function in mind that the gameplay is then modeled around, and that's what makes the settings and level design in these games great in my eyes...
I really love the added character flare you put in..the ending..just htat split second of rushing to the woman as the elevator falls makes calhoun feel heroic..even after all the idiotic antics along the way. Really loved your presentation here, and looking forward to what happens next! :D

Can't wait for the next chapter! The attention to the small details in this chapter really makes me want to just not proceed further down the story line and just thoroughly explore the area. Love what the developers did with blue shift!
Apparently the reason why things kept breaking throughout this chapter and the last chapter was that the people in the Anomalous Materials lab were pushing a lot of power towards the Anti-Mass Spectrometer for the experiment that Gordon Freeman is involved in. As that scientist Trevor said at 30:41, they were pushing their equipment too hard.
Glad you like it! Yeah, tons of easter eggs and optional dialogue/actions that didn't need to be there but the fact that the devs included them is so awesome
Thanks for the kind words! Thumbnail creation is one of the most fun parts of making these. Like you've said I try my best to make an eye-catching one without making it needlessly cluttered. Happy to hear it turned out well

This remake has brought another level of terror into our famous distopia. They have proven once again that nothing can be ordinary, calm and usual in Half Life Universe. The elevator fall just before we seen a chaotic nightmare was so intense, the music and the screams of the lady scientist, energy failure warnings, announcement of unauthorized biological forms in several sectors; this could only mean; our world's dying sigh. I want to see more dramatic and shocking scenes in the following chapters as well, such as a security guard getting pulled by two zombies and falling to their deaths.

26:00 "Yeah that seems to be the running gag" Loved the meta joke here xD The build-up for the Resonance Cascade is insane! Never thought I would experience such an unnerving soundtrack either. Honestly I thought Blue Shift would be a bit more boring to watch but this reimagined elevator sequence turned out to be possibly one of my favorite bits in the franchise. Note: Barney "pranking" kinda fits the character since he's actually quite humorous himself.
Can you imagine a Source Mod in Black Mesa but you are a Janitor? To be fair a janitor is a most likely probability to survive, having all the keys to all the doors. Janitor with a clearance of Level 9
I love how much HECU Collective has given this mod the true "Black Mesa Treatment" so far, especially in Duty Calls. It differs drastically from the original Blue Shift, but in a way that it doesn't become too different or just unenjoyable, while also not being a direct copy-paste of Blue Shift into the Source Engine. The devs have been doing an amazing job. (Also, great video, you really nailed giving your videos a cinematic feel)
@@Sexy_Nutella Ohh, hm. I see, I see. I honestly thought it was forgotten since it'd be strange to include a far older Breen's face inside the game, but at the same time it could be said to hint at more than what seems to be.
It's a reused effect from Half-Life 2. You can see this exact one on a breencast screen on a distant building in the chapter Water Hazard. If you look closely it also shows an eerie and ghostly image of G-Man for a split second. It's probably unintended for those images to appear here
I'm very happy that the got the voice actor from BM to do the guards since that last mod the HECU Collective did didn't have the voice actor. I'm referring to Black Mesa Azure Sheep I'm that regard a great mod but lacked the voice acting.
Speaking of a remake for Opposing Force, I saw this Mod called Black Mesa Military, mod that lets us play as an HECU marine named Steven Mills, who obviously not Adrian Shephard and after I saw the HEV suit hands replaced with the HECU marine hands for holding the guns and it reminded me of the first chapter of Hunt Down The Freeman where the HECU marine protagonist "Mitchell Shephard" is inside Black Mesa, and I thought, what if we were to make a remake of the first chapter of HDTF in Black Mesa, also I kinda believe that we can make HDTF better, so petition for any modders who reads this comment, please make a remake of HDTF chapter 1 also because I kinda wanna see what Mitchell looks like in the BM version of the HECU uniform, if your wondering why only chapter 1, well since chapter 1 takes place in the Black Mesa research facility and we are to use Black Mesa, that kinda means that there can be no way to recreate the rest of HDTF
Holy hell that ending was intense! I've never played this expansion before so it's all new for me. Very immersive! The timing on those background songs are spot on again. Always gets me pumping. Looking forward to the next chapter, I hope the lady survives.... Also Barney is a butthole haha Edit: I just read the lady dies... my day is ruined
Glad you liked the timing of the music sections, I spent a bunch of time to make sure the elevator doors closed at the right time when Barney goes back up to the main lobby. And yeah, the Resonance Cascade was crazy.
It turns out that there was a Breen face at 8:30. If you go frame-by-frame when the screwdriver makes contact with the camera, you'll see the Breen face.
To be very fair Black Mesa also had this, with the Anomalous Materials track playing once Gordon gets the HEV (and even HL1 with Klaxon Beat). I believe BM:BS is calling back to this. I didn't mind that track myself, got me pumped to start my shift haha
Pô eu achei legal demais haha a música synth é massa, poderiam ter encaixado ela melhor em um caminhada mais relevante mesmo, mas acho que a intenção foi se sentir empoderado na sua primeira tarefa de guarda do dia.

24:38 My guy; Barney didn’t even talk, and yet this lady had some nerve to sharpen some sassy nonsense the moment he arrived. What Black Mesa can really do to a person 😭
Speaking of guards' lockers, and I already said it under an other BM:BS video, but it's kinda funny how the tradition of placing developers' names on them turned most of guards in this section into Russians or people of Russian descent
This is a stretch but maybe it's a nod to all the Russian lettering we see in Half Life 2? Even though that wouldn't make sense in the current timeline of the events of Half Life, this is a remake of Blue Shift, a game made just over 20 years ago and we still can't decide if it and Opposing Force are canon, so who knows.
@@thisyoutubehandleisdumbasfuck A huge portion of the HL fanbase and fan creators are Russian, but I'm really not sure if HL2's setting had any effect on that

"Warning, Facility service system failure on levels - 3, 5 and 8." "Warning, Extreme energy field hazard in Sector C." "Warning, unauthorized biological forms detected in Sector B, C, D and G."
Did anyone play original HF and BS thinking that its not goofy enough? Why did they put so much goofy lines in this mod?! Anyway - love your playthroughs Nutella
The original was kinda hilarious af on purpose, just in a different way. The disaster and character deaths were over the top and meant to be humorous, but with the tone of HL2 and Black Mesa such things are taken more seriously with more detailed characters and world building so they kinda translated it to dialogue instead. Same level of silliness I think
Yup, not as much as HL1 or OpFor. But I do prefer some elements of BS over OpFor. Captive Freight is one of my favourite levels in any of the original Half-Life games.

I also saw a sticker of the Chumtoad on his locker. The Chumtoad is a cut NPC from Gearbox and Valve.
Good eye, yeah those references are on point haha
That's probably a reference to the easter egg in the original Blue Shift where if you shoot the box in Barney's locker enough times, it breaks and there is a Chumtoad inside.
@@Funguy100005 Totally a reference. I mean, why would they put a chumtoad in there?
It makes you feel Even more so than the base game that you were just a normal guy going through the daily grind, trying to survive an incomprehensible disaster…
Also special shout out to unplugging that scientist’s laptop at 2:55 was freaking hilarious, nicely done Nut!
Also also, Even more so than the main campaign the level of characterization You were able to get Barney through just moving your head is impeccable, especially Backing away from things like the computer malfunctions, Using the sink & hand dryers in the bathroom, the way You look at yourself one that scientist comments on your shirt being in-ironed And especially almost putting the screwdriver in the trash had me rolling
Just nothing but compliments all around
Great observation on the guard/scientist relationship. Those guards really got looked down upon and they don't deserve it at all :( The voice of Sisk really helps sell how genuine and chill they are too, so that when they start getting into trouble it's so easy to sympathize with them.
Glad you appreciate those little gestures I gave Barney. In my mind, he's like Gordon in the sense that he's a prankster, but he's more upfront with his displeasure of the science team's snobby-ness given that he's a guard.
The intro text during the tram ride also showed your main priorities as a security guard:
High priority - protect equipment and materials
Medium priority - protecting the scientists
Lowest priority - ensure your own safety
Yeah, your job description is basically telling you that your own well-being is not relevant.
@@simonaspalovis1204 Yup, loved that touch. It was similar to Freeman's introductory text in Black Mesa Inbound!
14:57 This was so unnecessary but my god did it add so much to this video
Nutella, you are truly a cinematic genius
I'm glad you appreciated that. Part of it was to make sure the song ended when the doors to the HE Particle labs opened, but part of it was to play it for laughs hah
The song timing should be done in engine honestly, this fit so perfectly the music should be 2 parts and transfer between lower volume repeat while dialogue is on and more intense when moving between places. its absolutely stunning the atmosphere it created
I like to think that Calhoun uplugging the male-karen’s laptop charger was just an act of revenge for getting mad at that one security officer
33:02 that scream always freaks me out
Everything sure was breaking down even before the Resonance Cascade occurred.
"Just one of those days, I guess."
Yeah, Black Mesa seemed to be having a terrible day in particular that day haha
It's like a dark omen
@@hatti... Yes. A dark G-Omen, for sure.
@@Sexy_Nutellaif you work at a top secret research facility and it happens to be May 16th in the 2000’s and every starts braking maybe just prepare for unforeseen consequences
The level design in this mod is top notch in my opinion, scifi yet believable.
Agreed. I'd love to work in a state of the art facility like this, minus the alien invasion
Thanks! I intended to convey exactly what you've described. Barney might be an ass to his colleagues, but he has a good heart and jumps to the pump when duty calls
8:40 Haha did that scientist kneel and dab 🤣
Yup. This guy was way ahead of the trend ;)
12:20 Even in the original Blue Shift I could never figure out what Otis was doing with that doughnut.
Might be wrong here but I believe he's trying to reach his gun with his non-donut hand but is too committed to the donut to simply let go of it hahah
I think he was trying to eat the donut
Can't wait for the next chapter! The attention to the small details in this chapter really makes me want to just not proceed further down the story line and just thoroughly explore the area. Love what the developers did with blue shift!
Agreed. Same reason I love just messing around in Anomalous materials hah
The Keeper is one of my favorite scores from BM:BS so far
Same here. Meta-Collide is another of my favourites for its buildup.
Yes. Because some suit with a briefcase press them to do it and the administrator agreed with that.
The team did a really good job with this.
Agreed. It's amazing
24:06 I tried stopping the cart here by putting myself in front of it. Unfortunately, all that did was crush me between it and the crates and kill me.
Lmao, that happened to me too. Hence why I didn't do it in the video lol

“Yeah, what do you care that I just leapt one floor down and broke my leg in the process?”

Thanks for the kind words! Thumbnail creation is one of the most fun parts of making these. Like you've said I try my best to make an eye-catching one without making it needlessly cluttered. Happy to hear it turned out well

Make fun of Otis all you like but he’s the one working for a classified government facility and not you
And probably making a better wage than I am :(
Yeah and he's probably not a bog standard rent a cop too. Security in BMRF is basically IT and maintenance, I'd wager Otis has a bachelor's in communications or comp sci too. Not to mention a loving mother ❤
9:02 you'll never take me alive. That moment he ran from scientist asking where the donuts gone and he runs.
and he use a fucking magnum too , Otis is no joke
AAAND he survived the anomalous incident and a cleanup military mission that followed
I recently finished black mesa but after seeing this. It feels like a totally different game
It's worth a playthrough for sure. It's basically a very high quality expansion pack to Black Mesa, just lkke Blue Shift was to HL1
You're in for a treat. Duty Calls in this mod is much more cinematic and emotional than the base game.

Yeah, the sheer dread I had anticipating the Resonance Cascade itself was not unlike anything I've felt before. They executed that sequence so well
It does a great job playing off the fact that the player knows what's going to happen, and just shows you all the signs to make it feel dreadful all over again

26:00 "Yeah that seems to be the running gag" Loved the meta joke here xD
The build-up for the Resonance Cascade is insane!
Yeah, that Resonance Cascade sequence is top notch. The score is killer like you've said. Glad you like my portrayal of Barney :)

@@Sexy_Nutella Looking forward to it, then.
I agree completely, they took liberties where it made sense and added to the experience as a whole. Thanks for the kind words!!
Strangely enough, is the glitching/sudden disconnect texture at 8:30 a forgotten placeholder?
I believe that's an intentional easter egg of Breen's face!
It's probably unintended for those images to appear here
Oh wow nice as soon as I get home I can watch the video

I'm very happy that the got the voice actor from BM to do the guards since that last mod the HECU Collective did didn't have the voice actor. I'm referring to Black Mesa Azure Sheep I'm that regard a great mod but lacked the voice acting.
Kevin Sisk's voice is perfect for Barney. I literally can't imagine anyone else but him and Michael Shapiro to fit that bill

Same here!
I still need to check out BM: Military. Heard good things about it :)

The original was kinda hilarious af on purpose, just in a different way.
