Life on a U.S. Navy coastal patrol ship

  • A day in life of Petty Officer 1st Class Keevan Haynes aboard the U.S. Navy Coastal Patrol Ship the USS Typhoon. Haynes is not only the only culinary specialist onboard, but on such a small ship every sailor must strive to learn and do things outside their rating.
The U.S. Navy has 13 of these 179-foot ships crewed by about 25 sailors. Eight of them are currently forward deployed to Bahrain to operate in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.

Petty Officer Haynes....You just expressed the life onboard a PC better than any I've heard. My CS was actually MS1 Blossom. MS1 Blossom, along with just about everyone else, could set the headspace and timing for the .50 cals in the middle of the night while still serving great food for the crew and I. I felt proud to commission USS TYPHOON and as some below have expressed I feel a greater sense of understanding of what the Coast Guard is all about too. Today's events in the gulf with USS THUNDERBOLT remind me of how important the PC's are to the fleet and our country. I'm proud of the PC fleet! Keep your powder dry and fair winds and following seas. Great job shipmate! From the Commissioning CO.

Keevan...you make me proud. I was an EN3 aboard USS Coronado LPD-11 from '73 to '77. I was the assistant supv. in the boat shop. You have a great can do attitude. I know the U.S.N. is in good shape with sailors like you aboard.

Most popular people on any ship, or deployment on land for army, are: cooks, supply and pay.
Under supply we include those handling the mail.
The PO in the video had a great outlook/attitude. 👍

The Cyclone-class patrol ships are much better and more operationally effective than the unfortunate Littoral Combat Ships (LCS').

Most Navy vessels have sailors who can multi task. For instance an electronics tech can be doing firefighting or boarding party as well as his normal job. The smaller the ship the more you will find ratings having a broader knowledge of other sailors jobs.

I was on a 140ft icebreaker with a crew of 17. Our cook, a 2nd class, was the winch guy on line 4. Later in life, as a 1st class, I was the attack team leader for a shipboard fire if tied up in port. For R&A, I had to provide and use the "ultrahot" cutting torch.

they should have done the life of an Enginman on board a PC, they do it all. up all night repairing a generator then maning lines during sea n anchor detail next morning. watching the rest of the crew go off on liberty while they stay behind and take on fuel or make repairs. standing 4 n 8 watches or 6 n 6 if the FN's dont hurry up and get qualled.

I think the CG still has both of them doing drug interdiction work. Almost all of the Cyclones were headed that way UNTIL the Navy needed shallow draft ships for the Gulf. I think the US gave one to the Philippines too. I know we have 12 of 14 boats built left with 10 in the Gulf.

That's stupid. You guys don't have enough men and ships to do your job now! The assholes in DC are worried about walls when most of our borders are COAST. They can send the NG to watch the border, the Coast Guard boats I've crossed sailing are WAY TOO OLD to continue such a dangerous mission. They should be giving you guys new boats.

In the 1980s. Civilian Airliners poaching military pilots. In the 1990s, it was big corporations poaching executives from military ranks. Today, with the explosion of celebrity chefs, the fanciest restaurants are starting poaching their sou's chef from military as well. Pretty soon all good military chef will get poached too. Its good thing for them men/women. But its a serious issues for the military I supposed.
