Her imagery is just so on point. I felt this poem from start till end. "Anger is always a secondary emotion so what's the first, fear, anxiety, sadness, loneliness. Sharon, aren't you supposed to be telling me these things?"
I've watched this video a lot lately. I love what she says, BUT ALSO HOW SHE SAYS IT. I may be a bit naive (and I'll admit it right off), if this is based on experiences she's had in life with grief and others leaving her, she talks about it so courageously and honestly. It's also like it is with a therapist. She said things and came to some realizations of ehr own. Every negative emotion we have has fear beneath it. Desiree...Young lady...I love what you do and how you do it...This, "Shave Me", "Sink", "Elegy In Ten Parts" You use your voice and mind in such remarkable ways. Thank you for the gifts of your voice, mind, and courage...
That brother in prison, and how he gets mad when you don' write him... my own did that to me when he was in prison for the second time. Now that we are not on speaking terms while he is out, I found old letters, to him, from me and our other siblings when I was at least 5, I asked where our return letters were and my dad said "He never wrote back." I sent him so many pictures, and pleas, and only now do I find out that he should have never been mad at me in the first place.
To Desiree...your words and your story are so powerful, so raw, and we are all so very grateful that you have the strength and the heart to share them with the world. In performing you make yourself a spectacle, as you say in this piece (in a different context), however you connect with so many who have a similar story and feel alone in their world and cannot make sense of it or express it. Never leave us.
"Nobody wants to develop my negatives in their dark rooms" love this line so much!

Desireé Dallagiacomo is one of the greatest spoken word poets I've ever seen.

First heard this in 2015? "I stand in doorways and I cry allllllll the time," has lived in my head, helpfully, ever since.

I don't understand the part about her sister being her same age?
she means her sister and the sister she's never met are the same age, so her father got her mom and another woman pregnant at the same time
sheesh, now my problems seem tiny!
My father didn't walk out on me but I wish he would've
