  • NEW DELHI: They’re popularly referred to as ‘the seven sisters’- seven contiguous states that lie to the east of the Siliguri Corridor. But the region is equally diverse when it comes to terrain, biodiversity, culture, language and history. Many of these aspects remain largely unknown to the rest of India. In the first of a two-part series on ‘Simply Nitin’, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale talks about how these states were created/reorganised and how they have been dealt with by successive central governments.

    You should also talk about the Bangladesh war and its impact on North East... how Indira's opening of the borders flooded the NE with Bangladeshis and made the Assamese people a minority in their own land...

    Leaving the NE people on their own not only alienated many of these ppl from India but also their own native culture and this vacuum was exploited by church and alienated them more.

      It is not that we are alienated from the rest of India by - a policy of the government ! But rather the lack of knowledge by ordinary indian of their own countrymen. Like seriously - Are you from Chinese ?
      As far as culture is concerned - culture and religion are not the same. The church is a stabilizing force in that sense.
      The church does not alienate culture in that sense . For eg . Luira phanit ( is a cultural festival - harvest festival *) which is promoted by church bodies. So the church actually helps preserve culture.
      Christianity is not Islam that you forget your culture ! How you live on earth is up to you . How your relation with God is personal to you .

      @@plendafuture7451 Do you know what these two top most active insurgency Mizo and Naga has in common? And what is the slogan for the NSCN? some Naga tribe in Arunachal are Hindu and they are not involved in insurgency but their Abhramic counterparts are and many native religion followers too face similar things. Church didn't stop the ethnic cleansing but Indian state did. And I can guarantee you most of native festivals, folks and Dieties won't survive next two generations. Remembering the native roots and folks are necessary to save a community from sliding into isolation.
      Obviously many people don't know about NE and can get confused AND such things can happen with many other people not just from NE and part of what NEn face is purely due to racism but that part is very small.

      @@Dhirajkumar-ls1ws so what ? It's ever changing.
      It's been 4 generations since Christianity came . Our culture has not gone. Rather Christianity help promoted our culture.
      What do you know of nagas ? They hunt head ! It is Christianity that allow them to have a common ground and bring the people together . What makes you thing you get to see the hornbill festival a 100 years ago ?
      You are equating Christianity with insurgency. Say Mizo signed the peace accord in 86 has guaranteed peace , why ? Because it's a political issue.
      You have an issue with christianity . Don't let that blind you . ULFA , Naxals are Christian ? What of Khalistani ?
      Use your logical reasoning . You can come and see the culture in northeast ! And then speak about it . Hinduism actually negatively impacted culture in the northeast . It brought the caste system in the plains which brought a concept of ucch - neech ! Is that our culture ? No !
      And what do you mean by culture - it's what you eat , how you dress ,how you behave , how you talk in a socially acceptable manner ( different for different tribe ) . You say culture as if it's constant when it's ever changing. You use your mobile - to text - isn't that a new culture that you added on to your life . Hasn't your culture or way of life changed in the past 10 years.
      Anyone who actually prevents change is not helping the cause of culture. Ironically , To preserve culture is doing it a disservice in reality.
      Coming back to hornbill festival. To preserve culture would basically mean not letting anyone come and see it , not letting any interaction because it would pollute ! Today hornbill festival attracts tourists all over the world. It uses all the latest tech , logistics which comes with modern technology ( was this naga culture ) .
      Don't get me wrong - you have a very narrow view of culture . It's much broader than that. You might work in a Pucca house today ! Was that indian culture say - 200 years ago .

      @Metallus Zorax are you educated ?
      This is my country ! Why should the opinions of people in the streets bother you. Read the constitution !
      Acceptance - do you want acceptance ? I Don't give a fuck about that ! I am an Indian and the opinions of people on my looks will not change that . - we have siddis ( people of African descent ) Punjabis and Kashmiri ( of caucasoid descent ) come to south india ( Dravidian ) jharkhand , chattisgarh ( tribal belt of people - mostly of negritoid descent ) Himachal , uttarakhand ladakh , Sikkim ( also has people of Mongoloid racial descent ) . Do they need my approval or your approval to be Indian ?

    cultural exchange is necessary to know people better as it act as a soft power, North know about south through its food and religion connection without even speaking common language similarly now people know about something about NE is due to its cuisines like momos has become popular in Metro cities even than NE is still a mystery for most.

    • @MaTara01
      @MaTara01 3 роки тому +1

      Momos are Bhutanese /Tibetan cuisine, not really North East. Vegetarian Indians need to respect non- vegetarian cuisines of India, like in the North East, where pork & beef are widely consumed. For e.g. Gujarat is not Nagaland and what Gujarat eats should not be imposed on Nagas, living either in Nagaland or any other Indian state. Food hegemony by vegetarian Indians is harmful to India's unity.

    • @Dhirajkumar-ls1ws
      @Dhirajkumar-ls1ws 3 роки тому

      @@MaTara01 I know momos are of tibbetan origin but it has been popularized by NE peoples. Tibbetan cultutre is not just present in geographical boundaries of tibet but also in Arunachal and sikkim. Point is that soft power of food and folk/music is the greatest connector of different peoples, even chai and khichdi are not Indian they are of chinese and nepali/tibetean origin respectively but it connect a lot of Indians together. Other thing I would like to mention that it is not only just pork or beef(Maiythun) that NE people consume all the time a lot of diversity of food is present. If chai from China can connect darjeeling&assam to kerala and a nepali/tibettan kichdi can connect UP & Rajasthan so can a tibettan veg momos and noodle(thukpa) can connect Gujarat to NE.
