Most of Indian farmers are craving for water , many suicide due to bad harvest ,even our states are fighting for water . Why central gov is not taking any action ??
At this time, India is not able to utilize all the volume of water allowed it under the treaty. It is pointless to abrogate the treaty. Pakistan would love to abrogate the treaty , negotiated under the auspices of the World Bank and USA. Pakistan did almost nothing to use the water allotted to it and most of it is allowed to drain into the Arabian sea. This also accounts for the severe flooding every monsoon. The Pakistani’s who discuss the treaty on Pakistani media are remarkably ignorant of the details. The Pakistani members of the Indus Water Commission understand the treaty and are no longer invited on Pakistani TV because they confirm that India has followed the treaty in letter and spirit.
India got only 20 percent of the Indus waters and Pakistan 80 percent, whereas it should have been the other way around..At the very least,India should have been 60 percent,India being the upper riparian country .Nehru's India botched up the negotiations. Our MEA has a very poor record as far as negotiations are concerned.
Massiah called Nehru, could not become a world leader, only a source of suffering for indian subjects. Please suffer silently, friends. Good program. Thanks to producing team.
The IWT started as a private initiative by US engineers and is one of the most enduring international water treaties and it’s still a bilateral entity. No point in blaming the World Bank, now.
Indus water is also coming from China. Can we not scrap the tready on claims that water inflows is reduced from china side and we will only renegotiate a tripartite (instead of a bilateral) treaty whereby all water resources among all three nations is agreed upon.
@99Sure. China is not going to jump into such things, but atleast we can put billateral water agreement between india and pakistan indefinitely on hold on these grounds.
If you think about it any treaty needs to be renewed after a period of time so the time has come to renegotiate the treaty. Although I would suggest waiting till 2030 by which Pakistan will become water scarce and then India can blackmail Pakistan to give away PoK else India will stop the treaty
There have been three wars between Pak and Ind on Kashmir. People in Pk unhappy about Indus Water Treaty. People in India unhappy about it as well. But this treaty has created peace on water. If this was not there, there would have been 2 or three more wars between the 2 countries with loss of life on both sides. This guy has been an ambassador but still has not grown up!
Divisions happens based on the number of consumers. Even getting 80 percent how is water is used in Pakistan . Best irrigation system of world went to Pakistan . Our farmers in Indian Punjab and Haryana worked hard even with less to produce so much wheat to feed 130 cr people and even for export . What is the position of Pakistan well they cannot feed 22 cr people in 2021 and forced to import food . Nature sees every thing , karma always come back .
pakistan and it's urge for war with india is well known that doesn't mean you deserve any advantage in water sharing negotiations...you should thank your stars that india got a dumb PM like Nehru who had no vision or political will to carry out the right thing. India deserves atleast 60% of Indus waters on all parameter.
Lol given that all the wars were started by Pakistan it doesn't hurt for India to start atleast one. Also your army can't fight war for more than 4 days. So you're screwed. Give back PoK and make peace else India should revoke Indus Water Treaty
what happens if china stops water coming into india through tibet in response to india scrapping the indus water treaty as pakistan hugely depends on this supply of water and can harm chinese interests
Muh ki baat zin li, india has no benifit from indus water treaty so it would be scrapped earliest 🙏,do we have any such treaty with china over Brahmaputra river???
While the point is well taken, what can India achieve in real terms if we cannot build dams fast enough to benefit from scrapping the treaty? The water would continue to flow to Pakistan? Also, can China not build damns across Indus in Tibet and block the flow? The issue is of course of another total nonsense from Nehru but executing dams also could be difficult. Based on various factors, what could be the ideal way forward? What are Immediate and long term consequences?
It's good that through such interviews the mindset of the Indian foreign policy establishment is unmasked, who usually hide their hawkish views behind a veil of pseudo intellectual TALK. By the way India should not forget where many of its rivers begin..
The fanaticism, perfidy and criminality is with the Pakistani military, the elite, the Islamists and a huge section of the Pakistani people, particularly in Pakistan's Punjab. So no, the people as such cannot be excused, or spared from sanctions/punishment.

India has a population of 140 crore and Pakistan's population is just 22 crores.
India should get 80% of water from Indus Water Treaty.

Superb interview. Precise, concise and logical. Hope the Modi government is hearing
I agrees with Chandra sir, we must take action this treaty is very unfair.
