Growing up in the 70’s into the 80’s we were lucky with music. I could name several great rock bands but we all know who they are. Heart was so good. The voice of Ann Wilson is seductive and strong. We lived thru the golden age of music. There will never be another era that comes close.
Here it is 2023 and I’m revisiting songs from back in the day. I’m a old school Hard Rock/Metal guy but I have a,ways loved Heart. Great band the voice of Ann Wilson is amazing. Heart was so much better than most soft rock bands back in the great 1980’s. This song wasn’t a huge hit but my fav off of Passionworks.
My favorite song by Heart. This came out when my wife and I first met and it was kind of "our song." We will be celebrating our 30th Wedding Anniversary in August. thanks for helping create the magic Ann & Nancy!
@@Jgeneraledger23 Yep the dynamic duo. I seen where Ann was talking about doing a set in Florida one night flew to DC did the stairway to heaven bit and then back out on the road. Amazing to us but to them just another night of jamming. What a life to have.
Very underrated Heart song. Definitely in my top 5! Love that "You got another thing comin" F# groove the guitars and bass ride. Oh yeah, and Cameron Crowe was one lucky dude (Nancy).............
Out of all places, I saw Heart perform this song (and several others) at "Six Flags over Texas" back in summer of 1988 or 9. A mere $5 cover charge to see them at the small amphitheater there. A Fan jumped on stage and grabbed/hugged Nancy from behind during their performance. She simply walked backwards, backing them both into the waiting security guys... The video here is a reference performance though, thanks for sharing.
Yeah, I never understood why this song didn’t do better on the shirts. I did hit number one on the AOR rock charts, but it didn’t quite crack the top 40 of the overall hot 100. I think it was right on point with 1983 and in fact it was the first song that I consciously knew was ann wilson‘s voice because I was so young then
Easily #1in the Heart Catalog for me. Something about that groove. Love so many things they've done but this one just does it for me... Howard Leese is a genius by the way.
Favorite Heart song? Really? Have you heard every song on "Dreamboat Annie", "Little Queen", "Magazine", "Dog & Butterfly", "Bébé le Strange"? This album was the end of heart in the way of creative influence.
Heart-breakingly so. Oh, I've loved Nancy since the first time I laid eyes on her... my little self is like "An eighteeen year age difference, that's not so bad." lmao We still love you Nan!
This was just before the band's rebirth with 1985's 'NEVER.' "Never" have I seen a greater Comeback in Rock-n-Roll History. Two careers; 1975-1983; 1985-Present. Way To Go Ann and Nancy
I see all the comments on this & they are like mine. This song rocks & is one of their best yet for whatever the reason it didn't do well on the charts. I saw one comment that said this song has more hooks then my tackle box & it does, but still ........
I had a bootleg vid of this whole show on VHS about 15 years ago. Darn, wish I still had it! I believe it was New Year's Eve '83, and most of the set was Passionworks material.
Just over a year after this, Heart would have even bigger success with the 'Heart' album. Bigger Hair, Bigger Singles, Bigger Videos. I wish I could have seen what it was like for a Heart fan during that period. I was 7, 8 years old at the time. With fashion, styles & ect. I can't think of any artists over the last 15, 20 years that went from a certain style and image to another within a years time like it was for the musical artists in the 80's.
They went from great early in their career and started playing these very mediocre songs. Too bad as this was a great song. Then, they got a great lineup, much better songs, and frankly sexed up their image until Ann got fat. That's not a putdown, just a fact. I still say she is one of the most underrated singers in history.
I was in high school in the early mid eighties. A lot of 70's bands were transitioning as music, and even how you looked changed. The 70's looked so outdated when you were standing in 1984. Check out Yes, Journey, even Neil Young and Lou Reed looked somewhat contemporary. As far as Heart in the mid 80's went, kind of the same band but I didn't associate them with the 70's version.
I can tell you what it was like... I was in high school back then and it was beyond awesome! Everybody loved them. They were all over the radio and totally in fashion, and they were all over MTV. And back then, MTV actually played videos! That's probably a surprise to a lot of the younger people. Yeah, there was a time when MTV just played videos all day and all night. It was like listening to the radio, only with video to accompany it. Now all they do is play stupid TV shows which hardly anybody watches.
I was about 20, 21 years old and it was an interesting time for Heart. Music was swiftly changing to more MTV/New Music/ British bands like Duran Duran, Culture Club, etc, (which I also loved, btw). I was worried for Heart, as they'd fallen somewhat from a big rock band with hit songs and albums to somewhat under the radar. It seemed like they were being swept aside as yesterday's news. When the album Passion Works, (from which the song is from), came out in Fall of 1983, I was hopeful as it sounded great, and the album cover showed off the band in sort of modern-style, (for the time). But when I say it was flatly ignored, I mean it. Never heard a song on the radio, never saw any videos on MTV for this, (and believe me, I watched A LOT of MTV). The previous album was not exactly a big hit either, (although City's Burning got a slight amount of radio play... and I saw them in concert for that tour, in 1982, and they were stunningly good, with new band members & all). But now, in 1983-84, they were really being ignored. So when the next album, the self-titled "Heart" album came out, Spring 1985, again... I had high hopes, but after seeing how they'd been ignored, it was questionable how much, if any, success they would have. The first BIG good sign was that they had a shiny new video for "What About Love" suddenly in regular rotation on MTV, (a gamechanger... resurrected their career). I cannot overestimate how important it was at that time for a band to have regular exposure on MTV. This was before the internet, and without all the competing distractions of today. They were really like a new band, for new fans, and also bringing along their old fans who were excited to see the band revved up and modernized. A killer combination, (this same formula also happened with a number of other artists at that time, who were big in the 70s and had fallen and now suddenly were resurrected in a shiny new MTV glow, like Starship and Tina Turner and some others). And most impressively, Heart followed up "What About Love" with some more great singles with excellent, state-of-the-art videos, for "Never", and "These Dreams" and "Nothing at All". 1985/86, they were on top of the world, and I would say most of their fans LOVED it. (The following album, "Bad Animals", was also a big hit, but that's where I think more of the old fans fell away. Something seemed a bit TOO pop-oriented, formulaic, and "processed" on that record. It just didn't seem to have enough... "heart". But that's another story...).
Still an amazing rocker. I know the band was going through some internal turmoil at the time, but the entire Passionworks album, in my opinion, is so underrated. And this song in particular should have been huge. Love it!
Heart was extremely fortunate. Most bands; Steely Dan, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, so many others, really had a good 8 years to "be great," an 8-year Shelf Life so-to-speak, creating Original Material. Heart had their eight, waited, and had 8 more... truly a remarkable Comeback story in Rock.
Saw them live about 12 years ago...I totally agree with you...sounded almost perfect with just enough edge to everything to reinforce that they were playing live. Impressive
This was Heart’s survival song ( and definitely a good one ) but at that time the band was on a downslide. Lots of behind the scenes turmoil going on between members. However they would bounce back nicely a couple of years later with the self titled album.
Thank God it wasn't. They were able to "re-invent" themselves with 1985's 'Never.' What an insane comeback. My friends and I were just kids at the time... AND THOUGHT THEY WERE A NEW BAND. Incredible reinvention, Ladies!
I got the greatest hits CD and this song is really good! Did not know it was from 1983. Incidentally I don’t know why the crowd is so audible in this video.
I think Lisa Dillon the WMMS(100.7 The Buzzard) Cleveland DJ opened every show with this song. Any Clevelander’s remember that? Back in 80’s. I had a chance to meet her a couple times thru her husband Frank from Beau Coup two super nice people.
Hard to choose because I love so many Heart songs but this one is definitely my favorite. I do wish they would put this back in their line up at some point before they stop touring. @@Jgeneraledger23 Yes they did change labels after the release of Passionworks. They signed to Capitol Records. And in 1985, they recorded and released their Self-Titled album and "What About Love?" Was a big hit that year. The song was originally written and recorded in 1982 by a Canadian group called Toronto.
Great song and the best one off of the "Passioworks" album from 1983. The actual title of the song is "How Can I Refuse". No "you" in the title. Just sayin...
wish Nevison and the record company would've let them write their own songs on the album after this. As good as it was, the song here proves they could still write great songs without outside songwriters. I think the only outside writer they had on this was the one Jonathan Cain song they did
I love how Howard casually covers both the guitar solo and the little keyboard nuances.
Howard Leese the unsung legend of Heart
The guy who cares about the music over his "part"

You can't go wrong with Denny Carmassi on drums, he's a killer player
True. He was the drummer for some pretty good groups. Montrose, Gamma and Heart. And he drummed for Sammy Hagar and Ted Nugent too.
Denny was one of my main influences on drums, next to Bonham of course.
I Agree, he’s powerful and always in the pocket.
