it can if you switch to it right before the mutant does the attack . happen to me when i was looting a area thinking he can t steal that i was wrong . but hey better that than my expensive integral a fully modded

After leaving Lesser Zone, make a hard run to Malachite. Have a stack of water or energy drink and just run for it.
Before that, stop by Central Elevator just north of Chemical Plant and do the side quest. You’ll get Malachite Pass. This is optional for this run, you can always do it later.
Once you get to Malachite, trace the pipes overhead and run through it. At the end, you’ll get the Falcon armor. Basically the strongest armor just before getting exoskeletons. You can upgrade it to two lead containers, it also has backpack upgrades.
