all sage advice. You can be the greatest at whatever it is you do, but if noone else knows about it it'll stall out eventually. Gotta get out there, put boots on the ground and MAKE yourself known.
Cheers Max. I watch these vids because I love fighting games but I really enjoyed near the end of your rant when you touched upon learning multiple aspects of media and reaching out to people in a positive sense. It motivated/reassured me with this unrelated creative project I have in the works.
I really have a hard time getting my parents to understand why i love to do competitive gaming, going to mlg events to see my favorite players play halo and cod, getting tips from the pros i just really love gaming. Getting my parents to understand is still the hardest part to get them to understand why i do this hobby, why i stay up late at night running gb games. shout out to anyone that follows their competitive game hobby.
that's always been my goal as well, not to become the best player for the money, but to be the best to show off and to actually be looked up to by people and be apart of this wonderful community.
This is EXACTLY what we need. The FGC has the idea that the community is build around going to tourneys like SoCal and Evo, which is partially true, but there's another dimension to fighting games (and games in generals) which could easier get people to enjoy the otherwise very competetive games we like to play. There's no harm in lending eachother a hand, especially because that builds trust which in turn builds a gaming community. This is more important than the competetive aspects imo.
i agree about sports and when you cant do it forever. because i've done it, but you can always be part of it. even if you are not playing it. you can still coach it, and like you said teach other people about it whether it is commentating or blogging. and it is satisfying when you teach or inform people about that sport knowing that you helped them out and gave them a better understanding of that area
been into fighting games on and off all my life, but really getting back into it over the last couple of months or so, thing is I have so many fighting games from when I use to play them I get "goodish" at Tekken 2 and then a bit at Marvel 1, and Dead or Alive 2 but then I forget, I reccon I need to knuckle down and master one, but yeah your videos are great and make me want to play more ! Got the 3rd strike demo on my PS3 gonna get the full version next time I get paid :~~)
I really enjoyed this! My parents are against competitive gaming. I really wanted to do well in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, but I don't always do well. So I have taken up Super Smash Bros. Brawl ever since I had a Wii and found that since I grew up with all the Smash Bros games, I am actually good at Brawl and would love to take my skills up a notch. You inspire me because you are a GREAT player but you are still classy and very respectful to all of your opponents of all skill levels. I love y
I started playing Fighting games when I was only 6 years old it was 1990 and my father had a TurboGrafx CD and a copy of Fighting Street aka Street Fighter 1. I didn't actually see the Daigo parry video until many years after it happened, but it is way hype. It was always about the fight for me. I can remember teaching people how to play games like streetfighter and games from the vs series, just to have better challenges.
The first time I saw a parry, and the first time I saw SF Third Strike, was in the Daigo Parry video. Didn't know what the frak was happening but I was still very pumped after I watched it.
Damn max, you're like the monk on the top of the hill that shares his in kung fu movies. I want to make a videogame and I always thought it was something impossible, but you're right, it's not about the videogames, it's about becoming a better person.
I'd have a question for you : what was the best moment of your life when you were in a fighting game tournament (major or not) ? and why? I don't know if you'll see this but I think this would be inspiring for all of us. Thank you for all your hard work Max :)
I Really Love Fighting games im a fan of Max cuz I feel identified with his arcade stories, i play FG, since i was a child my first games were SFII (like everyone else XD) and KOF 94 since then those are my fav games. I actually love the current titles SFIV, KOF XIII, BB:CSE (CP coming soon), MK9, UMVC, VF5FS, TKTT2, DOA5, SCV, Skullgirls, etc im not that good but i like play the games.
this video was very good ! you helped me understand a lot of things about fighting game careers and just some other stuff in general and for that i thank you .
Interesting stories as always Max :3 This one had a nice critical opinion and also a good analysis on what it means to be a competitive player for a living, its much tougher than one might think at first glance xP As much as i love video games and i think i'll play them forever, i don't think i would go to have competitive gaming as my living, i'm still only thinking on what my profession is gonna be, not even in high school age yet xP
A long time ago I had this fantasy of creating video games because I loved them so much and I was a really good artist back in the day. Unfortunately that dream kinda faded but hearing you talk got me thinking about it. Maybe I gave up too soon. :)
Definitely agree max! In any industry it's all about making yourself more marketable and acquiring new skills. Do you have any plans in the future to stream gameplay live?
Hasbro is a great example of what Max said, about being an MLG type of guy, then teaching other people. Look at where he's at now, working with 3arc and IW on CODs
Max your the only reason i got into Fighting Game's if it wasn't for you i'd probably be stuck playing CoD all day so i just have to say Thanks your my inspiration to play Fighting Games's your the best Max
Hey Max! Just wanted to let you know that I'm a really big fan of yours. Also, will you be making another HYPE video of EVO this year too because the last one was great.
Makes me sad to hear that being competitive wouldn't last forever, especially since it's something I was planning to do. But at least I learned something from this, thanks Max.
and for those who are good at video games and play for fun but have other career goals, i can say if you arent born with a likable personality, learn to hide it or learn to change. cant stress the importance of knowing when to be social and when not to be. hell, no ones perfect but know when to put on your 'A' game and when not
The only one I know right now at this current moment would be Eduardo PR Balrog. Other people that have a chance would be Flux, Marlinpie and Yipes at the moment. Maybe RayRay because they had so many rematches I cant even count.
Totally nice guy who wants nothing more than to improve his fighting game abilities and play against the best and have fun doing it. Max is the Ryu of the FGC.
Max does have a good point. While he might be a good in umvc3 and other fighting games, he is even more well know for his channel and his achievements with his content than any big tournament. Btw combo fiend works for capcom now I was able to ask him during the SCR and its the reason he's not in tournaments anymore only casuals
I would like to hear you talk about Fighting Game fans and their rivalries against other Fighting Games, like those who dislike Mortal Kombat or Dead or Alive. Seems like whenever one of those games are brought up by players who don't play the games it always is used like an insult.
So I like to trade my healthcare career for video games, I really love playing and meeting new peeps. Dang I mean earning 35/hr is great but doing video games damn sounds awesome. I need to look into this might be something I need to do, to reduce that stress. More Real Talk Max, this very nice to inform us about video games and jobs in it.
great video Iwas looking forward to a topic about this. I am a struggling graphic designer who can't seem to find work. Might be going back to school for some web design, but what I really want to do is show my love for games and fighting games. I have a few series ideas in mind, but they won't be paying the bills if I decide to take the time to learn how to edit and use an HD PVR. Hopefully I will find a job i love in my field and be able to persue my dream of showing my passion to others.
Max I would like to see you do some show matches at events like SCR or Bar Fights. You don't have to enter tournaments but it would be very cool to see you compete at a live event and I think it would raise your profile.
I use Power Director 11. It's simple yet complete. The best part is when you render you choose the outout format. So you can go from .wmv to .mp4 with very little degradation. For capture on PC I use Fraps and console I use Elgato HD Capture recorder.
Great topic Max and I agree with you 100%. When it comes to any kind of sport whether it be physical or e-sports, you have to realize you can't do it forever. It's important to learn how to market yourself and your abilities. Charles Barkley is a great example of this. Allen Iverson is a terrible example of this.
i'd like for you to talk about the international scene in fightning games and how they have stepped up in the community and FYI im not talking just about japan, i mean europe, south america, not just asia
Of course people thought that Daigo parry shit was possible. John Choi did the exact same thing against a Necro player in a New Generation tournament. Only there, it didn't make people go batshit crazy. They hated it.
Damn man you gotta bring Assist Me back for the next Marvel vs Capcom that series was awesome it thought me to use Characters in a better way than i was. or learning more of there moves how to string all the combos together. and it had a bit of Comedy in there with you and Doom (Doom is Awesome) I hope that if MVC4 comes out you will be able to start back up Assist Me
Woah throwing in some sfxt? Lol nice vids max ive been subscribed since the first season of assist me i believe. Youre a real inspiration and seem like a cool guy you need to get on ps3 umvc3 so i can come out on a vid!! Haha
I enjoy playing fighting games. I actually want to go to make a fighting game. But as it stands, my ability to code and animate the means necessary for the game's engine is almost non-existent, so all i have are ideas. I was hoping that if i was ever good enough at these kinds of games, i would have an idea for what players would expect from a good fighting game so i can deliver.
Idea for a topic, & sorry if this has been asked before. What tips would you give for people who suffer from learning disabilities & concentration skills? Things such as Dyslexia, Autism, ADD/ADHD, etc. Having Dyslexia and AS myself, I find that I can learn characters, fighting mechanics & have the passion for fighting games, but diving into the more advance features of fighting games, that are required to be the best, is very difficult. Poor reaction time/judgment & learning fast from mistakes.
I feel like I can't really level, mostly since I belong to that Casual Fighting game crowd. I really like playing and I have a little ability in the games I play, it's just that in the end I don't feel like i could try and make a jump to Competitive. I don't want to be a "Pro" player, but I wish I could join the community. Doesn't help I don't the local areas to play at.I don't live near any of the areas that handle tournaments.
Hey Max just wanted to let you know Mlp fighting is magic developers just received a CnD letter, their is currently a petition going to show support and if you could spread the word that would be amazing.
oh yeah, i sleep walk but sometimes i cant sleep because of some anxiety of scare, i am 11 and have weird issuses but my friends play violent games m for mature games but they dont get issuses or they dont say
The difference between sports players and fighting game players is that sports players stop because their bodies simply cannot continue, what happens to fighting game players? Arthritis?
I hope you read this max but im a big fan. I have a capcom game you can its called Fate/unlimited codes its based off fate/stay night story you'll love it its lmvc3
that is if nobody else can give chrisg a run for his money. otherwise if there is, say goodbye 2 chrisg sustainin himself attendin every wednesdays big 2/battle circuit.

Always to good to take a serious tone with things, and to be honest you can pull it off pretty well, keep it up man.
Hey Max, really dug these "Real Talk" videos, because i love listening/talking about this FG stuff and the real world.
that's always been my goal as well, not to become the best player for the money, but to be the best to show off and to actually be looked up to by people and be apart of this wonderful community.

Thank you very much Max! That was very inspirational and relevant to my life!
This gave me a whole new perspective, thank you Max

Max thanks for sharing and being honest. It takes alot of heart to share these stories keep doing what you are doing DOOD!!!
This was very inspiring. Thank you Max. I needed this!!! ^-^

Came to this channel to watch Sega Saturn video's. Stayed for the awesome commentaries (and I don't even play or really care about fighting games).
A long time ago I had this fantasy of creating video games because I loved them so much and I was a really good artist back in the day. Unfortunately that dream kinda faded but hearing you talk got me thinking about it. Maybe I gave up too soon. :)

Thx u 4 your great story. Keep it up max and the crew.
i wouldn't mind hearing about your job animating sprites that you've mentioned before, and why you didn't pursue an artistic career.
im trying to do the same with artwork, really. so most if not all the points Max made in this video all make a lot of sense.
i was just thinking about this , glad you touched on it , good video

Yeah, my problem atm is that I just do video and I need to branch out..., But when I get a camera I will hopefully branch out

and add the fact that the games are going to change constantly, and perhaps the game that you knew is no longer in the events
respect increased, i wish i could do all that you do
i feel you bro my parents say the same thing for me when i play Video Games in general
Max can definitely talk on the Japan FGC.
Of course people thought that Daigo parry shit was possible. John Choi did the exact same thing against a Necro player in a New Generation tournament. Only there, it didn't make people go batshit crazy. They hated it.

Woah throwing in some sfxt? Lol nice vids max ive been subscribed since the first season of assist me i believe. Youre a real inspiration and seem like a cool guy you need to get on ps3 umvc3 so i can come out on a vid!! Haha
I hate things didnt work out at FG with Jago back to EMP he goes.I love that song btw
Really interesting talk, by any chance could you link that podcast episode?
Next arcade stories, can we get some SCV footage?
This is good Max, I feel more informed now lol
Champ is a good person he just plays the role of a bad guy like Jago and Noel Brown
thanks for sharing max.
You do what is good for you. Our opinions should not matter in the face of your well-being.
Plus, Can we fight in SFxT? On PS3? :D
as a Felicia player was kinda happy seeing max get beat by one now learn plz
great vid man

Max, would you recommend any classes in college to make yourself marketable as you've described? I'm guessing stuff like Speech is a must.
Hey max are you gonna do an arcade story about CVS 2?
I have fixed my anxiety with lots of sleepy time tea and heavy breathing through the nose.
I feel like I can't really level, mostly since I belong to that Casual Fighting game crowd. inspiring bro
Yipes told him to keep it real and he did., but he later apologize at Revalations to on stream.
Combo fiend started working at madcatz now.
This video was extremely necessary
Hey Max just wanted to let you know Mlp fighting is magic developers just received a CnD letter, their is currently a petition going to show support and if you could spread the word that would be amazing.
Motivation was to fight the best players, not the money?
Max = Goku? O_O
Max needs more power!
oh yeah, i sleep walk but sometimes i cant sleep because of some anxiety of scare, i am 11 and have weird issuses but my friends play violent games m for mature games but they dont get issuses or they dont say
Max is awsome
There goes max hero, watch him as he goes. Hes ordinary.
Thank u max
be happy for him though, that's a great ending heh
Is having anxiety when trying to sleep when you are lying in bed and you can feel you're heart beating quickly so you can't sleep?
The difference between sports players and fighting game players is that sports players stop because their bodies simply cannot continue, what happens to fighting game players? Arthritis?
Figured.
i think you should do a week of mugen.
Ola,gosto muito do seus videos mesmo nao entendendo muito o que vc fala, voce joga muito, parabens e continue assim.
Anybody have the links to that podcast he was talking about?
I hope you read this max but im a big fan. I have a capcom game you can its called Fate/unlimited codes its based off fate/stay night story you'll love it its lmvc3
got a link for this "fray" podcast?
I'd say it's the player's fault for being unable to adapt. They don't change that drastically.
As someone who wants to start making UA-cam videos, what do you recommend as someone who is a bit camera-shy or doesn't know what topic to talk about?
Max, real talk. Fighting games are fun, but like DJing, its just a hobby :)
that is if nobody else can give chrisg a run for his money. otherwise if there is, say goodbye 2 chrisg sustainin himself attendin every wednesdays big 2/battle circuit.
Let Zangief in that window dammit!
Respect
Dude, I think even if he was still beaten by someone, I bet he would still place 2nd or 3rd place every week and still pay for the rent
