Not sure abt my answer
However i think the ocean floor shelves are mostly basalt based rocks and hence basaltic eruption
Acidic eruption along continental mass due to underlying granite rocks more hard and resistant than basalt, also granite has more silica than basalt ,the more the silica the more the acidic and explosive it's character
