Like most horror fans, I was extremely excited for this and probably would've accepted anything we got. My initial reaction was that I enjoyed it but wish it was a little different. Kane not being there really hurt goodwill with the fans, regardless of how well Kirzinger did in the role; I accept it but it's still a sore spot. But actually getting this dream project completed was, and still is, a dream come true. Ronny Yu never did 'get it' in my mind but he did his best and it's still a great looking movie with the 2 icons going at it; funny to think that BRIDE OF CHUCKY led him to get this gig. Funny that he didn't do much at all after this film either. Rob Bottin would have been an excellent choice for this but sadly that didn't work out. I still can't believe that Peter Jackson wrote a take for this that didn't see the light of day.
This movie stands as a fun important milestone in horror but not a peak unfortunately. I find that it's probably gonna rank at the bottom for both franchises for me (well maybe the Nightmare remake is a notch lower) - but since I LOVE these franchises, none are bad in my eyes. I feel similar to this film as I do the newest Star Wars sequel trilogy - a huge missed opportunity but I can enjoy them as alternate universes that are still interesting but very flawed. How wonderful it would have been for this to be a 2-parter with one being a 'Nightmare' film and the other being a 'Friday' film, this would have pleased both sides in the copyright battle and it would have made money for sure.
PG-13 eh? Now that's a bold statement since horror faithful balk at it normally - but I support that idea fully! PG-13 films get unfairly maligned all of the time and it's simply a piss poor argument. There's lots of amazingly great PG-13 films and even PG! horror in the 70s. You don't always need gore, nudity and expletives to be quality horror. Like you said, I'm just glad we got this film at all, good or bad, we have it to discuss and think about the 'what if it was better' ideas.
