Batman Arkham knight was truly a work of art considering that it was released almost a decade ago.
The graphics in this game and ac unity is way superior than 90% of todays AAA games

I think i am going to play it again, especially after seeing this video. I remember playing this game again a couple of years ago, and was just amazed how the graphic still looks amazing, and even the physics compared to the current titles.

What a time to be alive. We have insanely powerful PCs and consoles and game devs are spending record numbers and time developing video games, but they're getting outclassed in every way by games from previous generations

This reminds me of how Crysis 3 was made in an engine that most developers would never even bother with. But despite being from 2013 it looks better then a lot of brand new games on engines far more advanced
Its truly unbelievable. Even the requirements of Arkham Knight is so low it makes me think other games are just a scam for us to buy newer GPU's. I wish that Rocksteady will change back many things in terms of management and quality.

It is low today but back in 2015 it was a extremely high on PC. Even a 9 series card couldn't run it well. So people were probably saying the same back then.
Newer games clearly have more polygons and dynamic lighting. Also, water is simulated. But looks aay worse. Imo, without proper art director with clear vision and some talented artists, games look meh. No matter how many polygons you put in.
Ps, it wasn't low back in the day. I've had gtx970, and i remember it lagging a lot. Maybe they've fixed the game with patches. Wonder how it'll run on 2015 hardware.
I think, none of people who made original Arkham trilogy are working in Rockteady anymore.
Theory: Maybe the GPU companies such as Nvidia AMD are paying devs a small portion to add their latest gpus as the requirements and even going as far as tweaking the game for that specific gpu or closer to the specific gpu in order to force us gamers to buy the newer models

Arkham Knight itself aged like fine wine. It was really terrible on release (at least on PC). The only gripe I have about the game are the overusage of Batmobil-Fights and that the reveal of AK identity kinda fell short.
Oh yeah.. and the need to 100% the "riddles" of the Riddler. I hated those. (but I hate them in all Arkham games)

Rocksteady in 2015 made an 8th gen game that could pass off as a 9th gen game. WB Montreal in 2022 and Rocksteady in 2024 makes 9th gen games that could pass off as 7th gen and 8th gen

A lot of the talented people who made the Arkham games great rotated out of the company long ago. Doesn't help that WB forced live service elements into SS. It was doomed from the start. This isn't the same Rocksteady we knew in 2015.

Its how you utilize them, as well how you enhance them with other effects.
Polycount is related to... frame buffer resolution. Texture resolution is also related to.. frame buffer resolution.
Well done graphics aims that single triangle size is between 10-512px except some larger planar areas.
Texture resolution is enough when texture pixel size is smaller or equal than frame buffer pixel size.
Frame buffer pixel size should be smaller than human eye resolution. There is actually room for upscale if screen size is small or viewing distance is high.
Disagree about texture resolution. Modern games have far superior textures (if you have the Vram capacity)

One good thing about S. Squad is that it's making people appreciate Arkham Knight more.
And ironically the way they treated batman's death made people realize that Gotham knights actually had a lot of respect for batman, the game never mocks batman and the characters miss him, unlike other recent DC media that apparently hates batman and treats him like a psychotic maniac, like titans and Batwoman

i find it funny how games released almost a decade ago are so much easier to run and look really good on their own, no RT bullstuff, just pure development and design
I think whole RT is just a joke for making neighbours envious, like ”Just look at all these reflective surfaces - that’s the power of PS5/XBX for you!!” Even though in reality only 5% reflections are RT and even if those are on, performance plummets drastically!
@@timmoman rt makes it easier on developers and is the "true" way to light up the world, the traditional methods mainly rely on basically painting static shadows painstakingly throughout the world which yes are easier to run by a long shot, but they aren't actual shadows and devs can't account for every single ray cast and recreate it perfectly, basically we've been faking shadows. Ray tracing however mimics real light pathing and makesthe job much much quicker. While in really well made games the visual difference is a bit negligible, real ray tracing is easier on developers and a slightly better result for players. The tech will catch up eventually and we'll be happier to have it than not.
@CrystalD77the 40 series of Nvidia cards can already handle ray tracing pretty handily, which means that it could become a viable standard in the near future. It’s come a long way since 2018. Even so, path tracing seems to be the REAL next frontier... we’re not gonna get a card lineup that can handle THAT well for at least 3 or 4 more generations though lol
@@fatnerd9985 ray tracing was already there but the hardware wasnt enough to keep up with that so the developers got very good with drawing shadows through rasterization that it looks better than current raytracing shadows but raytracing is in it's 3rd gen only, it will improve rapidly.

What i realized about recent games is most of them too focused on making everything detailed with gigantic 8k texture but left the overall environment completely bland. And often let DLSS do the heavy lifting instead of actually optimizing the game.
Older game often focused on overall vibes of the environment to kinda hide the lowres texture and lowpoly models. And this is overall looks better since we don't play games 10 cm right in front of monitor anyway.
That detail when Batman's cape tenses and the moisture comes off. Peak.

I am currently replaying Arkham Knight. I keep repeating to myself "this is ridiculous" when looking around. Especially conscidering the interactive/destructable environments/objects. Everything just looks stunning. There is also no pop in for models or even textures which is increadible when you conscider how far you can spot something in the distance and glide to while constantly looking at it.
All of this and i'm running it on an old, extremely used Xbox one.
The visuals, in every single way, are just amazing.
I want people to also focus that not only is the graphics being downgraded but the audio design as well which seems to be trend in games.
If you look at everything in the world right now, everything is being gradually downgraded, movies, TV shows, games, the music we listen to the quality of food, they're trying to normalize inferior products for the future. It's all outlined in the WEFs agenda you'll own nothing and be happy, everything will be free but inferior and people will basically be servants who stay at home fat and lazy , no more farmers all our food will be grown in a lab and modified. They're already starting to go after farmers which is why they're fighting back

the cape physics alone with the water splashes when u first open the cape to the sides, to the ripples of wind in the air as you're flying. The sound design is super cool and when you go onto photo mode you can see the details of the water on the cape is just SO good. You can also see water pitters around batman so it looks like the water is actually there and not some filter
Arkham knight is probably the best overall looking game I’ve played, the level of detail and complexity in every single environment is astounding. Goes to show that attention to detail and care goes much further than the amount of polygons.

Maybe you should remember how Arkham Knight failed to optimize the game on launch. It was pretty bad back then, comparable to Jedi Survivor.
So you could've said that Arkham was contributing to the trend of unfinished product. And surprisingly, hailed as a Gem almost a decade later.

It's like we were gradually improving from the 90s to the 00s and we peaked 2005-2012.
After 2012 we hit a plateau and maintained it until 2018-2020 or so.
After that everything's been going downhill at a steep decline.
I don't think it's the graphics that make Suicide Squad and GK inferior to Arkham, graphically they look fine. But it's the lack of style, or those little details that can make the environment feel more unique, no abundance of neon signs, ads, etc. Like how the moonlight shimmers on the waves. It feels like these other games just wanted to a good job, where Arkham felt like they pushed themselves to do more. I don't know how exactly to describe it but that's as close as I can get.
It’s worth emphasizing that the Batman game is running on UE3 no less, which was showing its age in 2015.

On Fortnite It asks once and doesn't pop up again. But I guess I know what you mean by games like Suicide Squad where it's something you definitely want but it's locked behind a barrier that you have to pay for.

Gotham knights is definitely not better looking the Suicide Squad. Say what you will about the story and gameplay, but the technical performance from facial animations to Its frame rate for its massive map is very impressive.

I used to keep thinking that I will mostly have to play any new games some 5 - 6 years later due to a lack of proper hardware and by the time I could manage a proper PC newer games will require more advanced hardware. But judging by the way certain games are evolving in a backward manner, I guess I shouldn't rush, certain older games look, feel and play much better than alot of current ones.

Those are the *_minimum_* specs.
The recommended specs are *GTX 760* (no "RTX") for AK and *RTX 2080* for SS.
They jumped from the 60-class to *70-class* and *80-class,* while somehow looking worse.
Suicide Squad min. req. says GTX 1070 but that's for Native 1080p High 60 FPS from what I have seen.
Devs are getting lazy and lazier these days

The GTX 1070 is for 1080p 30 fps *low settings.*
And GTX 2080 is "recommended" for 1440p 60 fps *MEDIUM* settings. Wtf! 😂

Hey if the draw distances were big that would be great on its own, but its been over two decades and we still cant let go of annoying distance fog.
Suicide Squad's HUD design is killing me.

Hud design in most games is awful these days. Even windows 11 has awful hud

Having said that, it's also testament to the art design that it just flows into the game, so you may not have noticed with all the other things going on.

Arkham Knight is a masterpiece. Still remember the 2014 E3 demo and how my jaw dropped admiring the graphics and the gameplay, plus the little "glitch" at the end. It was brilliant.
Crysis 1 back in 2007, that was pretty much next gen back in the day and even today looks great.

Man, it's been 17 years, take your rose-tinted glasses off. Even Crysis 3 looks dated today, Crysis remastered was heavily critisized for its graphics when it released. Even indie and competitive fps look better nowadays.
@@gameurai5701 Agreed with definition of crysis remaster. Basicly crysis 1 with worse graphics, if iam honest, i dont think crysis need any remake on its own. The only thing they could change is implement strenght and speed mod into run and bash as it is in crysis 2 and 3 where you have to use only armor and invisibility. Even tho i liked crysis 1 choice of all mods yourself more than in new ones...

One major issue holding back the industry. Very seldom do they actually use the systems full potential or get close to it. Last gen was more powerful than it appeared. Games that pushed it's limits stood out. Witcher 3, Metal gear 5, gta5,, red dead 2, Assassins creed origins, etc etc. Showed you what the systems were capable of. This is a great example right here. Current gen has yet to have an actual current gen game released. 3 years and nothing but upgraded ports from last gen. They haven't even tapped into current gen yet.

I don't think that the game companies realize that live service story games do not simply work, it is another story for fps games that need regular content updates but not story games, build a good story, get the vibe and gameplay right and you sell a lot, doesn't help when you focus on live service more than the gameplay

I think videogame graphics were reaching it's peak in 2013 (Grand Theft Auto V) until 2018 (Red Dead Redemption 2). I don't know which one should we blame, lack of passion from devs or Unreal Engine 4.

Knowing rockstar and their reputation when it comes to gta, i think they'll peak when GTA 6 comes out. The trailer looks amazing in of itself

Been replaying Arkham Knight this past weekend just because of your videos. Still have bugs, but it looks so good, it's crazy to think it was made with Unreal Engine 3, definitely the swan song of that version.
OG Rocksteady is the best. Skinwalker Rocksteady probably just used the default settings for materials for all the clothes and modifiers for wave effects.
The way those giant waves move so quickly is so gross.

Even the default settings for Unreal Engine's sea water effects looked better than that.
It's not just the graphics. The gameplay and performance have also become steadily worse over the years. This is a trend that will only get worse as companies gradually replace their veteran game designers with DEI hires and hire cheap overseas studios to develop their games.

nah dude gotham knights sucked. ssktjl has a better built in co op and MUCH better traversal/gameplay. I played gotham knights the gameplay was genuinely the worst feeling, looking, and was the CLUKNIEST game ive ever played
No please don’t start this, there are already enough 6/10 games that get called masterpieces years later (Assassin’s Creed Unity and most modern Pokemon games for example)
Some of ya’ll need to learn that a mid game having decent qualities doesn’t make it underrated or a masterpiece by default
What I hate about "next gen" is that they focus too much on reflections and Ray-traycing. Whilst yes, it does look good I would still prefer overall-general fidelity and polishing the little things/small details.

The problem is that these days, game developers seem to think that simply having larger textures and all sorts of tiny little bits of fog and reflection and shit will automatically make a game look good. And while it certainly doesn't look *bad*, it requires a lot more processing power and doesn't look nearly as visually appealing as a game where a lot of focus is also just put into, like, art design and stylization. Such as Arkham Knight did.
Arkham Knight looks great because Rocksteady used good textures and specific lighting in such a way that it delivers a real, genuine *scene* to the player. It sets up a picture and a setting that sets the mood perfectly. It's a 2015 game that looks better than current-gen games because it's not just super high resolution textures and shadows. It looks great because the scenery was well and truly *crafted* by a team.
Suicide Squad and Gotham Knights don't try to deliver the same kind of visual art as Arkham Asylum through Knight did. They just ram in a bunch of high-quality textures without a thought in the world and call it a day. And such passionlessness for the art of these games can be seen in all these comparison videos.
Knight has its issues story-wise, and it probably used a little too much batmobile. But it's still a blast to play, and it *looks, runs, and feels* better than SS and GK. Because despite its flaws, Rocksteady really *cared* about their Arkham series. Well... at least until SS. :(

True, some of my all time faves came out that year, Witcher 3, Bloodborne, SOMA, Life is Strange, etc
I’ve met countless people that live according to the newer is better clause…perfect example of the older games blowing away their newer counter parts.

I love when games that came out ten years later require five times the processing power, yet somehow look a console generation behind. Degradation of developers visible with the naked eye. We're not even talking about quality of writing in modern games here. "I just moved this shit.. with MY MIND!"
Sad how you completely neglects to mention the most important aspect in games (and the one that's often taking the biggest hit): gameplay! Goes to show how this generation of "gamers" aren't gamers at all and are part of the reason modern gaming sucks

When their 10 year old game looks comparable, it shows a lack of effort from the devs, animations are a major part of gameplay experience and the reason why devs such as From Software are so succesful nowadays. Do you think Suicide Squad has better gameplay than Arkham Knight? Me neither.
@@gameurai5701 I'm clearly talking about games in general, and nope, not true, graphics and gameplay don't go hand in hand, tons of games with mediocre/outdated graphics but with solid gameplay/combat out there prove that (including the games by the studio mentioned by you).
And yeah animations are crucial but I didn't mention them, I am clearly pointing out that modern games and "gamers" are ruining the industry by focusing way too much on realism, "cinematic" experience and writing/storytelling (leave that craap to movies and TV shows), while neglecting gameplay, atmosphere, replayability, art direction and so on.
@@wallacesousuke1433 Modern AAA studios seems to give up on both, I'd rather have a game that is at the very least visually stunning, as it could pass off for a tech demo. But nowadays, it rather feels like we only have incompetent games filled with microtransactions, that barely meet the lowest standards... At least, for AAA games. Weirdly enough, indie devs not only bring innovative/good gameplay (as usual), but they also use game engines in better ways than AAA game studios do (Unrecord is not yet released, but so far it seems that it could push the boundaries of video games graphics, and it is made by only 2 people !)
I'd say the worst part about all this is the fact that these visually inferior games requires better hardware, either because of bloat or because they use extremely high resolution textures and such. Realism and cinematic experiences are not (fully) the problem, but not understanding what these terms mean is. Arkham knight is visually more appealing, yet has worse textures, LOD and such : it's just that they don't matter when the player's eye is focused on the overall aesthetic.
Arkham Knight was graphically ahead of its time. It looks way better compared to most Triple A (Or Quadruple A that we apparently have now) that we get today.
Honestly, I would pay $70 for that game any day.
I think i am going to play it again, especially after seeing this video. I remember playing this game again a couple of years ago, and was just amazed how the graphic still looks amazing, and even the physics compared to the current titles. Just crazy how some old games are about 5x better vs the current gen.

I prefer the art direction of arkham knight but gotham in gotham knights is gorgeous with todays tech.
It's not even that Arkham Knight has actual better graphics, it's the fact that it's absolutely top notch at delivering in ATMOSPHERE, which is something the other games can't do. Gotham is an additional character in Arkham Knight.
The fact that Arkham Knight was made on older engine and still looks better then 90% of new games.

Arkham knight was just ahead of its time, still looks superb and better than most modern games.
Just look at buildings from the 1800's and then look at the new buildings we have right now, you can see the downward spiral everywhere.
I think all look fine but it was very clever to make Knight dark and rainy.

I think the rain and darkness makes it very difficult for a game with a similar size to look much more realistic. The only area of noticeable improvement overtime is the facial capture.
Rain looks so good in Arkham Knight because it uses particle method which causes every particle of raindrops react to lights. Gta 5 uses the same method and a lot of other good games but i don't understand why cyberpunk77 doesn't use it. I mean its RT super realistic and all that but.... Splash rain effect maaan...
