I like that when major leaguers go to the minors for rehab they buy food for the whole team. That’s a cool thing to do
That is really cool of them but I wonder where they draw the line. Like Bellinger just spent more than 60 days down there I think. Even with his money he couldn't have been buying takeout from the local steak house 30 to 40 times or whatever. I mean, he could have, but geez that is a lot to ask. That would add up to a couple hundred thousand pretty quick.
I can see a Manager wondering, “why aren’t we winning more games?” Maybe it’s because your guys are eating candy and PB&J everyday. Smh
I worked as field and tunnel security for the Rangers for a season. I became good friends with the cooks, one of whom was hired from working as a cook in Vegas at a hotel/casino. Sometimes, if the cooks were unsure of something or had extra, I would get some of their stuff, or be the guinea pig when I was sitting in the back of the clubhouse in the family lounge. I can honestly say that it was some great eats. They had a grill near the entrance to the garage that they would take out into the driveway and start grilling stuff like ribs, burgers, corn, hot dogs (Nolan Ryan beef, of course), and all sorts of stuff. Some of the best food I've had aside from travelling the world. By the way, love your channel, thanks for doing this.
Forrest Commander that’s really interesting
That is really cool man. Thank you for relating that. I don't know why but I find the pro sports world intriguing. Nobody ever thinks about these little things behind the scenes.
I am in charge of the post game game spread for the St. Paul Saints (American Association). They get Bagels w/ cream cheese and sandwiches ( peanut butter and jelly, ham and cheese,)before the game. After they game i give them some type of salad, desert, and four hot main dishes, usually two vegetables (i.e. Corn, beans, stir fry, potatoes) and two meats (Steak, pulled pork, chicken, etc..) . They also have snacks such as chips, cereal, cookies, donuts, chips and salsa, candy bars and fruit available all the time.
Will Bensing how much to make you my chef
Will Bensing Lucky dawggg
Saints of the American Association. Thats triple A if anyone was wondering.
My dad played a season with the Saints!
What a great team to be associated with! I understand that they get huge crowds and throw some of the most innovative promotions. I heard from a friend that they wanted to get in the Guiness Book of Records for starting the latest ball game in the evening, letting the fans sleep overnight in the outfield and then having the earliest start to a game the next morning. Crazy!
I use to work in the clubhouse of a triple-A team and whenever a major league player comes down for whatever reason and was in a good mood he’d buy the team and coaches nice ass spreads
Nice Ass Spreads?
Um, not on any team I've been on.
My coach that played in Indyball said they got a plater of Costco sandwiches 😂
Haha oo yeah!
🤣😭
Can you do a vid on equipment like gloves and bats and how you got them and chose the glove and bats you liked
Sure thing! Thanks for the suggestion!
Hot Dogs, Peanuts and Klondike Bars, Right?
This is yet another video from 'Behind the Scenes' series that I have liked right away. Yes, I have been very curious about what kind of meals do professional baseball players encounter and this video has fulfilled my wish. I was startled by the peanut-butter-and-jelly-sadwich predicament through the minors! (I understand, Matt. I am no fan of the peanut butter and jelly either! I tend to view the peanut butter and jelly as a 'last resort'; I would normally ignore it unless either I just do not have anything else available to eat.) Although, I can kind of understand the preference for the peanut and butter: A compact source of calories.
There is a cliche -- 'Soldiers march on their stomachs' attributed to Napoleon. I think this also applies to professional athletes. ;)
$50.00 per day is hardly anything for players making millions of dollars even the lower-paid players are making a really nice income. I doubt anyone complained about having to pay the fee.
@Greg Pettis
It's a little over $100, not 200. And it's only on the road. Not bad, but not $200.
Peanut butter is good for one thing: Baiting mousetraps.
Very true!!!
The hell you say. Peanut butter is one of the best creations and food of all time. Love me some peanut butter!
(Video suggestion) can you please make a video about what you do in practices and what happens if you miss them?
Sure thing! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Zach Attack- you practice.
Wish there was someone like you for the NFL
Haha thanks! One day maybe! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Andrew Tamez Conner Sullivan is a good person to check out.
Wouldn't you rather get advice from someone who's had a little more experience than 28 days in the NFL.....LOL
Mark Dobkin No it isn’t
Pat Macafee
Dude, get a mic please. even your new ones are soft....get a Yeti!
It would be interesting to hear about the interactions between the players at different levels as you moved up through the minors. Like I bet competition to move up from eating pb&j could get intense sometimes within a clubhouse. being a high draft pick I'm sure you were expected to move up the ranks fairly quickly. was there resentment from guys who realistically probably weren't going to move up the chain or just overall drama in the clubhouse
Great question! I'll do my best to answer them in a video. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Antonelli Baseball awesome! obviously I don't want to get you in trouble by giving dirt on former teammates. but I can't imagine every player wanted to see you succeed when it is between you and them who got called up
shouldn't teams invest some money in high performance nutrition instead of feeding fatty stuff? I can't imagine an Olympic runner regularly eating burgers, burritos or fries.
dominikk85 i
I don’t think it should be mandatory, but clearly nutrition, sleep, exercise have an impact on performance , and if that increases your chances of winning, I agree those options should be available
Yeah, they "should" offer healthy choices and they do from what I can see in Trevor Bauer's vlog. But, there will always be guys (like me actually) who don't really care all that much about their diet (I worried more about calories and protein) and if all you are going to offer is health nut foods then you will have a lot of unhappy players and a few over the top health freaks who are happy. They should have a good balance between the two. Also, it sounds like they didn't really expect the lower level players to be getting much of their caloric intake from the team.
No joke, a day after I saw this video, I was at a local grocery store, and I came upon "HomePlate" peanut butter. Made by former MLB'ers Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell, Marco Scutaro, John McDonald, among others, they wanted to make a healthier and tastier peanut butter for minor leagures (only has 4 ingredients) and it is now the official peanut butter of all 30 MLB clubhouses..at least they are looking after the young minor leagures
Interesting!!!! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Could u fill me in on the life of a bullpen catcher and what they earn. Thanks
These have become some of my favorite videos on the net. I was a pretty solid high school player who always had big league dreams... so it's fun to hear these behind the scenes stories. Also helps add a little more "depth" to my Road to the Show adventures in MLB the show. Thanks Matt!
I was just watching the Yankees game and they said Matt holiday is rehabbing in Tampa (that's where I live)and he took all 25 guys out to a really nice expensive restaurant down here n picked up the tab.. That's really cool... Keep up the good videos!
That is awesome! Thanks for watching!!
Interesting video as I am an executive chef for a AAA ball Club ( Gwinnett stripers formula Gwinnett Braves) and former sous chef for a single A team ( Dayton Dragons). I didn't know that some teams were doing the players like this I can't speak for everyone but I know that I always try to work with the club to see if we can get a food budget going because it's important to me for the guys to do the best and if I can add to their performance by giving them good food I feel like I'm doing my part even though I'm not playing the game. I have a question for you let's say you were AAA level what kind of foods would you say most guys enjoy. Any insight would be great thank you for posting this video and the rest of your serious hope you have a blessed and successful 2018.
Shut up man
"The Spread"
Yup! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
love your vids keep up the great work :D
Hey I'm in a bad slump with dropping my hands and I need to pick up my bat speed can you make a video or give me some tips?
Sure thing I'll try to throw something together for you! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Carson Pettit I was doing the same thing earlier this year. Have you ever seen Ben zobrist bat? I picked up my mechanics from him, keeping my hands moving really helped me from dropping my hands. and now I'm hitting 650
One video you say meal money for MLB is $100..in this video you say it's $50. Huh?
Clubhouse dues are $50. Meal money is $100. Thanks for watching our stuff and commenting!
That's hilarious, I thought I was the only one who wouldn't eat those PB&J sandwiches!! I was lucky, I'd go just outside the park in New Haven and go to subway for the 5 dollar foot long. LOL
I worked for a Frontier League team (Independent Ball) and they would order from local chain restaurants. The only well known place was Chick-Fil-A but only the plain chicken sandwiches. There would be a giant box of sandwiches everyone would grab from and if you were lucky there would be extras after the game. We had a pizza place, a hot dog place and the best was this Italian place we would get lemon chicken and salad
Do players get free hot dogs from the stadium? Can mlb players make certain requests for food or drinks
Gates Brown did in 1968 for the Detroit Tigers during a game. Google it, you'll laugh.
as far as i know your channel is completely unique on youtube. Thanks for the vids!
Thank you!!! Thanks for watching and commenting!
was pooling money ever an option at the lower levels? Like putting in money for a pizza, or a better spread.
Were host families ever an option?
And I think you were referring to "cup of soup" which was noodles/soup in a styrofoam cup.
"Host families" are NOT for PROFESSIONAL athletes. They are for Little League teams playing in the World Series.
@@jaysantos536 regardless, they do (did) exist
www.milb.com/news/be-a-host-family-292633356
In the late 80s I worked for a A+ level team. Never saw food provided by the team given to the players. Then again, we were known as one of the worst run teams in pro baseball of any level. On the road, players got something like $6 a day extra pay for food. Most of the players would go by a supermarket and buy stuff to make sandwiches or something cheap.
Didn’t know about the club house fee
What if you're allergic to peanut butter?? I guess a jelly sandwich lol
I love P & J, would have worked for me. If I had played ball at that level, come to think of it, my mom made me P & Js, so I did have that
I trip out on grown men having people feed them ? Like you’re a five year old. LoL.
Where I work I bring my lunch everyday.
All my co workers eat fast food everyday.
If you’re poor, fast food is expensive.
I work with some poor people
When are you allowed free time to do whatever you want?....hang out with friends/family...attend a mueseum...etc
My high school football booster club gave us better meals after games than these minor league clubs. Sheesh
Hahaha! Thanks for watching and commenting!
You were once a week. These guys are every day for months.
As Kirby Puckett said, "In the minors you dont need a wallett".
Im not surprised to hear they dont feed these guys very well at lower levels.
what about on long flights across the country? I always imagined the Yankees eating steak & lobster after games ha!
i do have a yankee question
Congrats on making the big leagues. And i also enjoy your channel
It's crazy that the affiliated MLB teams don't pay for the meals of their farm teams. Clubhouse dues for guys making like $20 a day? Damn...
Yup crazy for sure!!
its probably a factor of how much money is involved but also like pleasing millionaires means they're used to a higher level of food
When you were with us in the minors, Maddux used to send your clubhouse guy to our kitchen (Omni Inseat) for his cheeseburger on the days he pitched.. he preferred the way our chef made them to the ones in the clubhouse. 😂
LOL baseball teams are stupid. They invest millions in their prospects but won't feed them a proper athlete's diet. I would have thought that each team at each level would have a state of the art kitchen with nutritionists and chefs.
Peanut butter and jelly is the best!!
reminds me of that song
It's a job where you get criticized and cut for lack of physical fitness, but they feed players crap in the minors.
a little higher up in 'A' ball...maybe, you'd get some spam...instead of just peanut butter & jelly.
These are great but you need to fix your audio. Way too low
Did you know if you're on a mobile device, you can't like two comments at the same time with two fingers
Wow that's crazy
Can*
I don't like P B and J either your not alone
I love your channel and I love baseball!! So entertaining to me lol. Thank God I found ur channel
Who would’ve known little league food is better than big league food!
Right? I remember at least getting free hot dogs after games lol
Zinho9 my team had full on pot lucks
@@zachtkai2157 I had that in high school football but damn you must have been in a rich town lmao
Food is the key to anyone hearts... why the fuck does MLB not feed their girls!?!??
Burritos, burgers, pringles and candy. lol. Sounds like a shit diet.
Always injured and has a horrible diet, wonder how that happened lol
As always, a very interesting perspective.
Thanks for doing this...
Thanks! I appreciate you watching!!
Seems like you ought to be an authority on the coffee in mlb
Food seems very random in the beginning. Shouldn't food be important part of fitness?
It should be, but isn’t always. Thanks for commenting and watching our stuff!
I guess all that makes sense. Not only do the players make a bit more money at each level (at least they do from low A compared to like AAA) so they can contribute a little bit more, but the stadiums they play in sell more tickets and are more sophisticated. Some of these AA and AAA stadiums are amazing. They offer all sorts of food choices so I can see it would be a lot easier for the club to offer better and more choices to the players. Oh, and watching Trevor Bauer's blogs, the food at the LA Dodgers for the players looks flat out amazing!
Count how many times he says “spread”
Haha! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Your awesome Matt!
My step mom owns a catering company, really huge one, (she's cooked for the bushes and Obama), and she does all the meals for the Detroit Tigers. Some gourmet shit bro. This guy is a bit twisted.
Haha I said the food in the big leagues was really good! Thanks for commenting and watching!
Go Tigers!!
I like hearing this type of stuff but not delivered well.
Sorry about that!!
If players refuse to pay clubhouse dues what happens?
I've never seen it happen before so not sure! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Antonelli Baseball fascinating videos, thanks for making them 👍🏼
when do you start to put money in pension fund and whe can you start to get fund from it
I played NCAA ball and we'd get 8 bucks meal money for one road game and 16 for a road doubleheader. Of course being broke, we'd stop at a rest stop, I'd order off the .99 cent menu, pocket either 5 or 10 bucks. Well that lasted until about halfway through my first season when everybody started playing poker on the long bus rides and coach started noticing kids standing over on the side, not ordering because the ding dongs lost all their money (always the same morons too). Anyway, we got screamed at on the bus, something about NCAA violations and after that, no spending money for me. Coach had us line up, oder, then he'd pay the bill. And knowing our coach, he probably pocketed the extra and gambled it on MLB games.....Good times.
Smart as sh*t, giving perls of wisdom and experiences...
A litte bit awkward for somebody who spent one month as MLB player :D
Filip
It's pearl. Not perl.
Not sure how much MLB experience you have, other than on video games, bit it's kind of awkward to critique an actual big league player when you yourself can't spell, type, or play baseball.
@@TheBatugan77 You have never made a typing error. You are not sure but you can judge. Bravo :D
High-A Marauders (Pirates) has a cafeteria. Great food.
That is great! Thanks for watching!
Why would you play professional baseball if you're going to get screwed in pay and everything in general I wouldn't play the game if that's the way it really is I take my talent and do something else with it because basically if it wasn't for the fans buying tickets and merchandise there wouldn't be no such thing as professional baseball and simply it's a game that's all it is it's a game at least you put your talant to use after leaving professional baseball
Big leagues is a pretty cool reward. Thank you for watching our stuff and commenting!
I'm allergic to peanut butter. What would the case be if a player was allergic to the certain food they serve?
Payton Bond tough luck
Haha probably true
Hmmm good question...probably stay away from the spread. I don't think there were any other options lol. Thanks for commenting and watching!
Payton Bond have a jelly sandwich
i hate Peanut Butter to man you're not alone 😂
Yes 2 people! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I remember when I was an assistant high school baseball coach. My lovely wife assumed the role of "team mom" and would deliver a tray of pizza before long road trips and donuts and hot chocolate on cold days. The players would devour the stuff like beasts but they always said thank you to her.
Pity the poor McDonalds cashier after a road game before a long trip home. Eighteen hooting ballplayers in their uniforms..."12 Big Macs, 10 Quarter Pounders, 18 Large Fries and 18 Large Cokes stat!"
I thought they include food for road trips for mlb players.
At the stadium they do, but you pay for it. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I love Peanut Butter but it makes me break out so bad, worse than just peanuts, from allergies. I get hives on my skin. I think its all the extra peanut oil in the peanut butter as oppose to the natural peanut itself. So I have not ate PB in a decade. Its not a life threatening allergy at all, its not fun having itchy patches of hives on your skin either. I even eat normal peanuts or peanut M&Ms and take some medicine and don't have trouble. Or even eat a reeses cup every now and then and don't have problems. Because its small dose. But when making a PBJ sandwich its a higher dose of PB than one Reeses. And you need enough to enjoy the sandwich lol. A bad side effect of me not eating PB aside from that rare reeses cup is that I don't like Pancakes anymore. I grew into this allergy in my teens. I had established I only liked Pancakes with peanut butter on them when I was a kid and pre teen. So when I grew into this allergy I also stopped liking pancakes. Actually I like chocolate chip pancakes but they take more effort to make and my dad didn't like to do those too often, also less healthy lol.
I know what its like to not like something a lot of people like. I don't like Beer. At all. And no I don't drink but thats not why, I do like to have something like Mikes Hard or Smirnoff Ice and a tequila mix. I just can't stand the taste or any I have tried which is a lot. I don't care to drink enough to get used to it. But I don't think I ever could. I have actually never been completely drunk either just close. It just isn't something I want to do. It doesn't amuse me and I don't think its fun. But its not the reason, its the taste. Because there is alcohol I like. And I am not a lightweight really either. I can drink 3-4 Mikes Hard type drinks and not feel drunk. So thats usually where I stop. I feel it but its not what I would call being drunk in the slightest. I don't test the driving law though when I do lol, those laws/tests can say your drunk as far as BAC goes even if you don't feel it.
I'm glad you are able to string together grammatically correct sentences. By definition, it is pretty much impossible to be intelligent as a pro baseball player if you are not a pitcher for the following reason: THE TIME INVOLVED for position players. Pro baseball position players must practice tons of hours on both offense and defense. Then throw in overall body training. Considering the fierce competition from Little League all the way to the majors, those that make it will have spent thousands of hours of their lives hitting a little white ball and fielding a little white ball. Fielding a ball and hitting a ball does zero for academic acumen. There are only so many hours in a day. Very, very, very rarely do you you hear about an ex MLBer retiring to a medical or law practice (maybe never?). There are simply not enough hours in a day to study, and at the same time, have time to practice enough for the MLB. I admire the stick-to-it-ivness of a guy that is willing to do this, but in a way, he is performing a bit of a lobotomy on his brain via non usage. For 1 in 100,000 baseball playing dreamers, they end up with the big payday. Feeding minor league players peanut butter sandwiches everyday says a lot about how respected they are. No other sport would dream of feeding an athlete peanut butter sandwiches. And wow, when they move up to AA, they get Pringles chips!!!
I've been in the Rangers club house in Arlington. They had a wall of candy, gum, drinks and seeds. Looked like the inside of a gas station. Beautiful-
I read that former Blue Jays pitcher Jesse Carlson (aka Rabbit) loved Peanut Butter and Jelly so much that he always made sure that he brought his own to the MLB clubhouse just in case. He would have a sandwich before the game and another one around the 4th inning.
Can you talk about the famous candy bag that had to be packed for the bullpen?
When my cousin was with the Rockies I went to a game in Philly and they had a cook in the clubhouse making philly cheesesteaks. It was pretty good! I remember they also had a fridge full of beer. One of the best conversations I had was drinking a beer with Sandy Alomar Sr! Guy is hilarious!! Great videos man!
I like it! And that is awesome. Thanks a bunch for watching!!
who's is your cuz

oh cool
Please discuss the concept of CLUBHOUSE DUES...I was in the minors 38 years ago...I’m sure things have changed.
The Rod Sox AAA team is moving from from RI to Worcester, MA in about 2 years.
I worked for a short season single A team in Jamestown. Matt is dead on. Not only was the food like that the guys either lived in a community college dorm or with families in the area. Not the glamorous life at all.
When I worked on the field for a AA team I remember the road team always got catered food like pizza or Mexican food, but it probably just depends on place.
I’m shocked to learn players in the big leagues have to pay $50/day for clubhouse dues.
How many turds does an MLB take a day lol
My highschool team was traveling to the neighboring city and the team we were facing was actually one of are favorite teams because they would feed us Bbq after the game grilled by the coaches and we would do the same for them it was a fun rivalry
Did you play for the chihuahuas in triple a because they are triple a for padres right now or did you play for diablos double a (both were teams in El Paso)
Well it's been a year since my last comment moved on to work for the Toledo Mud Hens another AAA team... And now I am taking a practical in Chicago to work for the White Sox to do all the players food .. might make it a thing to comment everytime I get traded to another team guess I'm just like a player huh
haha! good luck to you and have fun!!! I may have to get you on the channel to ask you some questions about food! Thanks for watching and commenting!!!
Catered Applebee's? Do they bring a bunch of microwaves to the clubhouse?
I don't like penuet butter either!
Yes! LOL. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hey Matt. Curious what it’s like for a young player recently called up to play against the team he was a fan of growing up.
i’d like to know what it was like to go from a metal bat to the wood bat. was it a tough transition? how did it affect your batting?
It'd be pointless to eat at the ballpark when you are getting $20 a day meal money.
Great videos, can you tell about what cities had the best food and what it was and also were there ever any cheap big leaguers who wouldn't buy during their rehab stints ? Thanks
Weird to me to eat before a game. I would be sick to my stomach running on a field after eating.
Macaroni and cheese = real food
eww
Would you ever consider a coaching job? Hitting coach, college head coach, etc.
What was the lowest per diem you ever get, and what did you bought with.
You had to pay $50 a day to eat?
Yup! And for laundry and stuff. Thanks for watching and commenting!
big surprise about paying dues..and for laundry.....thot that went with the gig...minor league getting waxed ten bucks a day for horse cock and pb.....gotta sting....
I wonder what it's like nowadays with the excessive peanut allergies.
If I got pbjs every day I’d love life lol
Haha! I wish I felt the same lol. Thanks for watching and commenting!
what position did you play?
All infield positions, but also spent some time in the outfield
They’ve upgraded these days they’ll at least give you some turkey and cheese
