This is very close to the real EVH 5153. I have the 50w 6l6 EVH 5153 and love that amp. I'm surprised at how close they are. The only thing is that I noticed the real amp doesn't need a drive pedal in front of it to get those great tones. But still this video shows that the ax8 can get very close to the real thing! Thanks for making this video.

As a soon to be AX8 user, my favorite thing to see in all these tips and tricks videos is that to get any sound you're doing pretty much the same thing you'd do in the real world. Something that can't be said for a lot of other modelers.
I'm a former 5150 user and these controls respond exactly how I expected!

That's great to know actually. I've only spent time with the 5150 III mini so that wasn't the best comparison.

Great tip about reducing Motor Time Constant - that tightens up the low end! 3 more tips I use to get a tight modern metal sound: 1) Sat Switch to ideal and leave the Sat drive at 1.492 2) Change the tonestack type to Brit 800 3) lower XFormer match to .762. All three effect the output so adjust the level on the amp so the VU meters read the same before and after so you aren't fooling your ears with just more loudness.

I need to get into x former match a bit more, powerful parameter. I'll definitely try this with the 800 tonestack!

It's weird I've tried XFM on other amps as well, and it seems to effect the 5153 red a lot more. Not sure why. It's also strange that a lower gain tone stack sounds better to me after adjust the level - it's a lot louder than the default. Adds some grainieness that I like.

Very nice vid, Leon. I’ve struggeled a bit to get a sound I like out of the 5153, but your settings helped me quite a bit :)

This is convincing me to spend money I maaaay not have lol.....nice stuff Leon. Sounds great.
I was wondering, when you play live, are you using the ax8 through an amp's fx loop and bypassing the amps preamp? Or are you using it straight into a poweramp? I watched a video of Ola Englund's, and he plugs his ax8 straight into a small Fortin poweramp and then into a cab. Seems like a pretty cool and efficient live setup.

I just go straight to FOH most of the time and get a feed through fold back. Building an in-ears rig for the band at the moment which will make it all even easier.

I spent the last few months building an in ear rig for my band, and while it relies on a laptop for mixing, it was relatively cheap and simple to setup, and virtually eliminates the need for us to get anything from FOH. I'd be interested in seeing what you build! Great videos!

Thanks a bunch. Sounds absolutely fabulous! Only the nay sayers will keep on saying nay... just because they can.
Along with the Duncan PS170 I'm home for gigs and rehearsals.
    Keep it up Leon!
    Cheers

Leon Todd I’m glad, I came home from work and I ran through this and popped these settings in and it sounds amazing, my biggest problem with this amp was the hunky mid range, and I could not seem to get rid of it even when I had the mids at 0. I had no idea the master volume was bringing all that up, I just went off of the EVH user manual recommended settings for the master volume it was at four , so after I put it down to 2.5 I was able to balance the mid with everything else, and that presence/depth boost sounds fucking awesome, I had my presence at five and my depth at zero before lmao

Man I wished you had an AxeFx 3. It's kind of difficult converting your XMB to the AxeFx 3 XMB

I have a question but it's not about this video. It's on how you record your ax8. You use the RCA SPDIF out on your AX8 and the 1/8 TRS audio in? I hope that's how you did it because I can't find an RCA SPDIF cable to a Toslink SPDIF. I have only had my ax8 for 4 days and that part was confusing me.
Your videos are great and keep up the awesome work!!

    • @LeonTodd
      @LeonTodd  6 років тому

Just the regular 1/4 inch nowadays, since my UAD interface lacks RCA SPDIF.

Leon what was the signal chain - AX8 direct to DAW interface? What kind of interface? What kind of DAW monitors are you using?(FRFR monitors for live?)

    • @LeonTodd

AX8 - UAD Apollo Twin - Pro Tools. Monitoring on Adam A7X studio monitors.
