I completely agree. The original moved me for reasons I can’t explain. This version makes me feel things I can’t explain in ways I can’t explain and for reasons I can’t explain. It just hits deeper.
You should definitely check out the version of Stairway To Heaven at the Kennedy Center Honors. They put an orchestra and several choirs behind it and the cherry on top is that Anne Wilson was on vocals and Nancy was on acoustic guitar. Here’s a link to his reaction if you haven’t seen it: ua-cam.com/video/OM1QcRTdgkM/v-deo.html
RIP Gary, your voice will live forever in my teenage memories. I live not far from Sothend on sea where the band started. The Essex coast probably gave them their sound as their songs always remind me of home by the sea. He passed last year and left a hole in the music world. 👍💚
That sound is an oboe. And thank you for saying you love violins. Therefore, as a violinist, I must subscribe to your channel. Thanks for another great, intelligent reaction. :)
Perfection~~~ they were the first to sell over 10 million copies ( came out in '67) making them one of the most commercially successful singles in history. Gary Brooker died last year. RIP
The woman - at the beginning of the song - in the orchestra is playing an oboe. Which a woodwind instument similar to a flute, clarinet or saxophone with a very thin reed.
What is truly stunning is he originally sang this song in the 60s and his voice sounds the same, just richer. Amazing and great to hear this old masterpiece redone with an orchestra.
🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 On the same level You will appreciate "The moody blues" Live performance Song is 🎵🎵 Night and white Satin 🎵🎶 Keep the good work my friend ✌️ 👏 👍🏻🙏
Paul McCartney was asked if there was one song he wished he had written .. it was A Whiter Shade Of Pale. It was the song playing when Paul first dated his first wife Linda Eastman! They were married for over 30 years until Linda’s death from breast cancer! Beautiful song!
I absolutely loved this song as a child, it came out in May 1967 and I was born in October, of course I always heard the studio version, but this classical composition Air on the G String by Bach was one of my grandfather’s favorite songs and I fell in love with it too, so together it had such an incredible emotional impact on me, it’s just perfect. I don’t know if you had seen that I brought up this song in your livestream or not, because we went off on a bit of a political tangent 😂, but I am so thrilled that you shared this with us and even happier that you enjoyed it. Everyone have a blessed day ❤.
Recorded in the late 60's, Procol Harum's 'Whiter Shade of Pale' had no orchestra in the original record. This 2006 recording was a special event w/ the Danish Symphony.
Love this song. I actually prefer the studio version from the 60's as it is the one I grew up on. This live version is very good though as it shows how powerful Gary Brooker's voice was even as he got older. "Conquistador" is another great song by Procol Harum. Sad to hear of his passing recently.
Funny, I've listened to this as far back as when it was first released and never got the Ray Charles vibe until you mentioned it. There are parts that are similar.
Great reaction. Part of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra was the back up for this. Outstanding. You have been blessed to be on this journey through great music. Bless your heart. I wish you well as you proceed down your path. Take care. 😊
"...her face at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale." Still one of the best lines ever written. So good a line in fact, that the rest of the song was written around it. I actually prefer this over the studio version because it is simply an epic performance. Love your reactions, keep them coming! ❤
This is Still a classic rock hit!!! Ever since the 60’s! Great music never dies. This song was featured on your Best of the 60’s video you did. The studio version is haunting…you should react.
This recording is in 2006. The original song was released in 1967, when the singer (Gray Brooker) was only 22 years old. His voice has barely changed. Procol Harum back then was one of another British rock & roll band, but they put out an early music video of this song. You can find it easily with a UA-cam search and see for yourself what it sounded like. The iconic linchpins of this song are Brooker's lead vocals and that Hammond organ. Procol Harum played a style of rock just arising in the mid-60s called Progressive Rock. This was experimental in nature, drawing inspiration and instrumentation from classical music, world music, avant-garde music, and new developments in instrumentation and recording techniques. Procol Harum in particular, like Pink Floyd, developed soundscapes and mood with their notation, lyrics, and arrangements. Their lyricist drew from avant-garde writing, whose purpose was not to provide literal or 'snapshot-sharp' descriptions of events, but something more dream-like, as if seen in visions or fog. They are meant to rely on the subconscious, leaving interpretation unique to the individual. Procol Harum's music and lyrics are quite literally 'a mood', and beautifully so. Given the blurred intent behind the lyrics, the meaning of this song has been debated since 1967. There is no clear or absolute idea, which was the lyrist's intent when crafting the words. To this day he will not provide any clue or verification of any component of his writing. Even the one clear item, "as the Miller told his tale", he denies as having anything to do with Chaucer's bawdy story "The Miller's Tale". I recommend doing a UA-cam search for "Procol Harum A Salty Dog Album cut". It was recorded and released 4 years after the original "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and, when compared with the 1967 recording, shows how they had grown. Great music.
Back in 1972, I went to a Night Club for the first time, and danced my first dance in a Club to this song...will never forget...I can still feel the way I did then every time I hear this song.
Mugnify. The original recording was a faster beat. Yes with orchestra more electric guitar and mainly organ for the melody. So, maybe now slowed to Ray Charles. It came out around 1967 from memory. Im 68.
When I first saw this video, I also was trying to distinguish whether the sound was coming from a clarinet or oboe. Looks like most folks think it's an oboe. Either way, it's just beautiful. Was amazed to see Gary Booker still belting out this song in 2006, as he did when it was first released in 1967. Just incredible. Brings back the "feels" from early childhood. Love it! RIP Gary
The original studio song which came out in the 60's was great but this live version is stupendous as it features a choir and orchestra which gives it more depth. Gary Brooker's voice aged like a fine wine. R.I.P. Gary.
One of my top favorites..my friend played this in her wedding..this 💗 version w the orchestra and choir feel s like your rising in heaven..ThankU for ur loving reaction..
Loved this song since I was about 12 years old. The live version with orchestra and choir turns it into a spine-tingler. Thanks for your impressions, glad you enjoyed it, all these years later.
The original version in 67 charted all over the world, frequently as number one. Lennon said it was the most perfect song he'd ever heard. I've told my son I want this version played at my funeral. RIP Gary, you will live forever in this song.
That was the Danish National Symphonic Orchestra and Choir, rated as the top in the world, they have many vids on UA-cam and are truly a modern marvel, hope you get around to reacting to some of their work. Their movie soundtrack concerts are marvelous, google them and enjoy 🎉
When the recording with orchestra came out, it was done with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in Alberta, Canada. Several years ago they reunited for the anniversary of the recording. Very cool night.
This originally starts with a Hammond Organ. (Like the 2nd verse in this version) Both are great. I enjoy the live because you hear how great Gary Brookers voice remained 29 yrs. after its first release
Best band ever in myopinion and always good to see someone enjoy it for the first time. There certainly is more believe me. Grand Hotel and A Salty Dog are just two to consider from their vast catalogue. I could suggest dozens more from a band who were so underrated by many.
This album was not recorded with an orchestra but I have their album Live in Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Conquistador from that album is worth a listen.
Gary was 62 at the time. Pronounced Procol HAIR UM. No orchestra was in the original, but the organ was very prominent. Gary's voice is much richer than in the original. Procol Harum and The Moody Blues were not afraid to use orchestras.
Great song, and great reaction! You might want to listen to their original version, from back when he was maybe abt 20 years old or so. Its beautiful too, but this one was amazing.
Gary Brooker was 76 when he died in 2022 and this performance was in 2006, 16 years earlier. He would have been 60-61 years old depending upon which month of the year this was.
No the original did not sound like this, but it's great in its own way! His voice is unmatched and is so powerful, it sounds even more powerful than it did when he was young!

They were a brand new band back then. New bands don't get orchestras. I love it either way.
There is a 1970s live in Edmonton Concert, which is to my knowledge the first time they performed with orchestra
RIP Gary, your voice will live forever in my teenage memories. I live not far from Sothend on sea where the band started. The Essex coast probably gave them their sound as their songs always remind me of home by the sea. He passed last year and left a hole in the music world. 👍💚
And, the guy who wrote it, Keith Reid died 23 March this year.
@@mikelucey5035 R.I.P Kieth, what an amazing song to leave to the world of music. 👍🏴
One of the most underrated singers of all time. I absolutely love the sound of Gary’s voice whenever I hear it.
Gary Brooker was so gifted and we lost an ageless talent last year with his passing.
That sound is an oboe. And thank you for saying you love violins. Therefore, as a violinist, I must subscribe to your channel. Thanks for another great, intelligent reaction. :)
I love his appreciation for the orchestra, Air on the G String is absolutely one of my favorites ❤
Is any of your work online?
@@ChanelStuff main line symphony is one
Seen this a million times and never caught the Ray Charles quality in his voice. Different, but I can hear it now
The younger generations have been starved of fantastic music and singers that did not need autotune ❤🇨🇦

Conquistador is another gem. I remember out high school pep band played it in the 70s...

Emmerson, Lake and Palmer used their classical background in their music.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane ✌

Absolutely like Ray Charles. Short, strong verses.
Gary's 1964 band the Paramount's did lots of great Ray Charles covers as well as aot of American soul favorites.

I wasn't even a glimmer in my mom's eye. And I'm 51 LOL. I've always loved this song. It's a great go-to to chill with a glass of wine.
My favorite version of this song.
This is gorgeous but the original is amazing. The organ in it is epic
This is so beautiful and epic. ❤😊
she's playing an oboe. it has a really unique sound.

Pretty sure the music for this song was inspired by a piece from Bach so the orchestra makes perfect sense.
Right, Bach's masterpiece 'Air On the G String' is in there; you can hear it clearly in the intro before Gary Brooker kicks in. Just amazing!
One of my faves.. The white Ray C....LOLZ
You missed his head wind up before he loaded up at the end.
