Fantastic, conditions look great again tomorrow. Hopefully you break in the kayak with a few good fish.
nice one Allan i fished the same spot on boxing day and got donuts will try there again next time i take my bost out cheers
Thanks Joe. Yeah its certainly a location that can be on fire or dead quiet. I went back today and got busted of by a couple of big fish, lets hope it stays strong for a while.
feel for you during the lockdown, we were lucky in Qld we could still go fishing if you lived closed to the waterways
Good job Alan! Feels good to be back out on the water fishing 🎣. 👍🏻
Thanks Isaac. Your 100% right its great to be back out on the water. Have you been fishing ?
fishingmad yeah I went off Altona pier for an hour on Wednesday and got a 30cm mullet and then yesterday I went on the boat with my uncle and we got 3 squid and 15 flathead.
That's fantastic. Cant beat a good feed of flathead and squid.
Awesome video Alan 👍 Great to see you back out there.
Thanks Jared, Its so good to be back out there fishing and making content. Have you been out fishing aswell ??
I haven’t been out yet, but my dad and I are gonna go out pretty soon on the kayaks chasing Bream

Great stuff I went out Friday morning with my dad and we got 6 whiting 8 flathead and 11 squid between us
Wow, Now thats a good day on the water Colbey. What area where you fishing ?
@@fishingmad straight out from Clifton springs boat ramp in 6 meters of water
Awesome, one of my fav squid spots. My mate bagged out there yesterday aswell. Love the clear water there
@@fishingmad yeah it's great I was using a 3.5 yamashita red head for the squid
Awesome, thank you. Yeah last time I was there a red head in 3.0 smashed them too !!
Nice vid mate seems to be an invasion of very small pinkies at the moment looks like you caught some good ones though
Thanks !! Yeah the small pinkies have been a massive problem since December, usually this time of year they start to slowly ease off. Lets hope we have some great fishing in the coming month
Killer video mate keep it up!
Thanks George !!! Plenty on the way
Ur back mate!! I’m still hangin to get out there!! Fish are going off
I sure am. I hope you get out there soon aswell. Just good to get out for a fish after a big break.
Nice session mate!
Thank you !!
Nice 👍
Thanks !!!
Lucky bastard lol
Awesome footage by the way
Thanks Ken LOL. I went back today and dropped a couple of big ones so my luck ran out.
Try fishing around Limeburners bay, I caught some nice squid there today. Just go out past the point as there is not much fish near where the yachts are.
Awesome !!! Thank you for the tip. I didn't know there was squid that way. ill try there fir sure next time. I fished princess pier on my kayak today and got spooled twice in 10 minutes. Must of been something big. Ill be back for revenge soon.
I was there on Sat. Tricky place to cast to the pylons and gotta pull the fish out. Those pylons got sharp mussels, cut my braid few times on good fish.
It sure is. I know exactly what your talking about. I went back on Sunday on my kayak and got dusted by 2 monster fish. I was devastated as these would have been really big ones. One practically spooled me so god knows what it was.
Could've been a big snapper. Being couple degrees warmer than the southern ppb, the snapper are still on the chew.
Might try with a mono next time. Much more abrasion resistant than braid. Great weekend though wasn't it.
Yeah it was an awesome weekend, great weather and so nice to be back out fishing. I wreckon the ones i lost on Saunday was a big snapper and maybe even a mulloway the one that spooled me. Im already thinking about trying mono and a stronger outfit i go next time. My 4-6 kilo road and 14 pound braid stood zero chance which was such as shame. Have you been out fishing ??
Definitely was a great weekend to be back fishing.
Went out Friday morning Camp Cv, water was a bit dirty, caught a snotty trevally, water was 12° there. Then Sat to that port melb pylons, same here, had 17lb bait rod with 20lb braid and 3000 reel, couldn't stop couple big runs, the pylons cut the braid very easily. Oddly I landed more on my soft plastic gear, 2-4kg rod and 10lb line, lol. Pinkies up to 40cm. Hooked a lot, lost a few, released some. Aussie salmon was on fire, a mate landed heaps of gunners. Might hit the surf in the next few days.
Thats awesome, glad you have been out there having a fish and enjoying yourself. Shame about the ones you lost looks like we had very similar experiences. Yeah we noticed lots of small salmon hanging around, lets hope the big ones turn up soon as there amazing to catch.
I went yesterday and we caught sooo many fish. 100 not keepers we had to throw back, we caught 7 great whitings and 5 pinkies biggest was 37cm and more type of fish. We went in Williamtown
Wow thats fantastic. Yeah its hard to avoid all those small ones isnt it. At least you were kept busy. I didnt know you could catch whiting around Williamstown. Ill have to give that a try next time. Any tips on where in Willi ?
@@fishingmad Near the football ground you will see lots of boats. We got into the water at 2:00 We started catching crazy at like 4:15pm and we left at 5:30pm
@@fishingmad Each 7 Whiting Were Between 35-40cm
Wow, thank you. I have fished there heaps before but never thoght to target whiting there. ill try that next time. Roughly what depth where you fishing if i can ask
Amazing, well done !!!
👍👍👍
What an awesome session
,well done another great video. Where’s the best place to launch by kayak and also is parking easy access, looks like a top place to go by yak aswell
Hi Patrick, thanks for the comments mate. Yeah easy launch access of bay road which is free street parking. I took my yak there today and got spooled twice in 10 minutes. Must of been something really really big.
fishingmad Thanks heaps Alan always looking forward to your videos and learning from them 🤙👍🏻
Thanks Patrick, really appreciate it !! Good luck out there,
Went to altona yesterday but to much weed in the water, it was just covering our baits ever cast and not to mention not even a single bite for the 5 hours we were out
Oh no thats no good. I had a few mates fish at werribee and point cook and they all said it was very quiet aswell. Altona generally has been OK for weed. Lets hope it picks up really soon.
fishingmad lets hope haha
yep, good luck out there !!
Hey mate just wondering what hooks u were using for the pilchards
Hey Jacob, its an older vid so I cant 100% remember. generally ill use 5/0 gamakatsu octopus circles or early season even drop down to a 4/0 or 3/0
🔥
Thanks
awesome vid alan, what colur plastics seemed to work the best over the two times u went (I read the other comments about u getting busted off )
I had the most luck with the 8cm Savage Fathead curl tail in motoroil and white, also 4 inch jerk shad in motor oil. I flicked a heap of other plastics but that by far got the most hits. Hope that helps.
@@fishingmad Oh ok, I wouldve thought the nuclear chicken would have done alright, but just goota find out what works hey. Do u know where I can get the jerk shads in motor oil, because bcf don't sell them, thanks
Nuclear chicken is a great colour choice I just didnt have it with me on those days. BCF do sell the jerk shads in motor oil, there probably just low on stock at the moment with all the coronavirus stuff happening. You can also order them online and specifically choose your preferred colours and sizes. The 4 inch jerk shads in motor oil and new chicken are top choices !!!
@@fishingmad oh ok coz i went onto their website and it didnt have motor oil in the jerk shadz
Your right thats bizzarre as I have several packets of the 4 inch jerk minnows in motor oil. Ill reach out to BCF and see if they have made a mistake here. They did have them at my BCF store this week.
Got to this video late - awesome stuff! What baits were the snapper preferring vs the salmon?
Was using a half pilchard. If you watch the video at the 4:36 it shows exactly the bait and how it was rigged. Hope that helps.
Hi Alan, great video, What’s the best access for a kayak to princes pier? Keen to take my PA17T for a try.
Hi Jason, there is free parking on bay road. I parked there today and fished on my kayak. The sand is quite soft so it can be a little tricky dragging your yak to the water. The PA17 will go great there. I got busted off by a couple of big fish today.
Thanks Alan, is that Bay Road Sandringham? Sorry Ballarat based so not over familiar with that part of the city.
Sorry my bad its the blvd just further up from Sandringham life saving club
@@fishingmad Hi Alan, It's actually Sandridge beach near the life saving club, not Sandringham. You don't want to send your friend on a wild goose chase padding up to Princess pier from Sandringham.!
I have not had any action at the pylons and have caught more pinkies directly out from the beach near the yellow marker pylons but only little tackers. Having said that, I am sure that the big fellas live in around the poles.
Thanks Simon, !!!! I appreciate you correcting my incorrect information. Yeah there are some big fish among the poles. I lost a couple there on the weekend that would have been really good ones. I have noticed the same near the yellow markers a couple of pinkies and flathead.
If I'm fishing for squid at night, do I need a glow in the dark jig?
Its a really interesting question. I have only caught squid at night where there was a light source close by. Eg if fishing on a pier that was lit up, or fishing in a boat with lots of lights. I have found that color at night doesn't matter to much as long as your in a lit up area. First light and sundown are often the most productive times but really hard to fish at night for them without a local light source. I hope that helps. Have you been targeting them at night ??
If you use a glow bead or two you will get them but you still need some light you can’t be in pitch black maybe get some leds or lights on your boat or kayak
Fishing in the early morning or evening when there is a little bit of light go then it’s the best time
Just a question what are the point of lighter rods and Heavy rods couldn’t you just use a heavy rod for everything
You can certainly use heavier gear its just not as much fun. With light gear you feel all the nibbles and bites and you have to play the fish. You can cast all day without getting tired. I admit in this spot which has lot of structure it wouldn't hurt to go a little heavier but I just love using light fishing gear.
fishingmad ok thanks
great video mate is there any sort of idea to tell what days a good day, dad and i seem to get no luck however we went out on saturday and got the bad luck day with everyone else.
Would you suggest any good whiting spots? thinking of heading down towards williamstown for whiting after trying out the pylons for some snapper in the morning. cheers
Thanks Nicholas !! I tend to go out whenever I can and not worry to much about the tides and barometer. I think a key to success is really being not afraid to experiment when your on the water, if a lure of plastic isn't work it change it, mix up the sizes and colours, mix up the retrieval techniques and if a bait isnt working try something else. You then tend to find a pattern of what is working on the day as its different every time. I have also found that really learning how to use your sounder can make a big difference. I recently upgraded the sounder on my yak and boat and that has really helped. Its a big learning curve but i will persisit until i master it. For whiting I have always had a lot of success at the corio bay entrance between kirks point and geelong. This was filmed there ua-cam.com/video/Q7FH7W83bco/v-deo.html supposed to also be some whiting around Willimastown in the shallows but I haven't really targeted them there. I did have an occasion recently catching a few good size whiting at Campbells cove which was surprising. Hope all that helps, let us know how you go
fishingmad Yeah, we are hoping to go sat/sun and try for snapper at princes pier and whiting hopefully somewhere on that side of the bay. Is the werribee / pt cook area good for whiting? Not sure about where to go for the whiting
I find whiting a little hit and miss around werribee and point cook. I've had a lot more success heading up towards corio bay or st leonards area
fishingmad cheers for all the advice, have decided that we are going to try st leonards sunday, hopefully we can give it a shot with going to st leonards. any tips for that area? we are aiming to head there at about 10am sunday morning and fishing till the high tide at about 5-6pm. cheers
Honestly that whole area is pretty productive for whiting. Stick to depths around 3-5 meters and if its clear look over the side whilst going slow for weedy zones. Berley up and if you don't get anything move every 20 minutes until you find them. Doesnt have to be a big move even a hundred meters away. Often you'll get a small window of craziness.
Can you anker where you stopped
100% yes you can anchor there. You will see lots of boats and kayaks anchored near the poles. Cheers
Hi mate, what location is this in Melbourne?
What type of hook u use to catch a squid
Squid jig, this might be helpful fishingmad.com.au/review/best-squid-jigs-2022
What bait were you using when you court that pinkie
It shows in the video that I rig up half a pilchard just before catching the snapper. Cheers
Alan what rigs did you use to catch this snapper.
Very simply snelled rig, you can make them following this video ua-cam.com/video/V4IFLAFfj3Q/v-deo.html you also get a lot of small pinkies there and can look at using smaller paternoster rigs like the hairyback rigs you can buy online.
Hey mate, what is the white rod and what is the weighting ?
Its a Savage Salt2 5-8 kilo rod. Its 6 foot 6 which i like as i can use it on the kayak aswell. There being sold at clearance at BCF at the moment for $25 if you can believe. Ive caught heaps of good fish with them
fishingmad do you think that rod can handle a 2 once snapper lead ?
Yep no worries I would think. There pretty stiff those rods, they also have a couple of stronger options aswell. 6-10 and 10-15 i think.
Dude i'm pretty sure we can't fish during stage 4 as fishing is considered a recreational sport
Hi Levi, this footage was filmed at the start of May just after level 3 restrictions were removed. Our team hasn't fished for over 6 weeks currently because of L4 restrictions in place. Thanks
What bait you use for snapper/squid?
Just before I catch the snapper the video shows me rigging up a half pilchard, which is the bait the snapper was caught one. Same in this video too ua-cam.com/video/4tnVxmSZ35g/v-deo.html cheers
where can we catch squid around port melbourne?
Closest spots im aware of are Point Cook and Wedge spit ua-cam.com/video/Vd5mSbXVR-4/v-deo.html cheers
Not much variety of species there.
Pretty sure the title of the video was Port Melbounre Snapper.
