Calculating Object Weights

- One of the first rules of material handling requires us to know the weight of the load being handled. If we are using a forklift or a crane we need to ensure we are not exceeding the load weight limitations of the equipment. The best method for identifying the weight of an object is to find documents indicating the weight of the object--bills of lading, instruction manuals, manufacturer's specifications, engineering tables are few examples of documents that in most cases will have the object weight. Occasionally, you may not be able to find a documented object weight. In these rare cases you may need to calculate an estimated object weight. This video covers methods that can be used to estimate object weights. Three examples, for three different types of objects, are provided. This information is covered in SAFM 4413 (Machine and Material Safety) in the Environmental, Health, and Safety Management (EHSM) program at Northeastern State University (NSU) in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The EHSM program at NSU has been designated as a Qualified Academic Program by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. For more information you may contact Dr. Doug Martin at marti223@nsuok.edu.
