Most importantly the R5 still not melted after all these years.

I had a 6600k back when these CPUs out and saw the writing on the wall for 4C/4T when I started getting bad gaming stutters, always wanted the 7700k but Zen 1's core count for the price completely convinced me that 6C/12T was the future

this title called to my soul, the 7700k is still powering my plex server, zero plans to upgrade it

I believe a comparisons between the i7 7700K and the r7 1700 might have been a bit more fair because the r5 1600 was meant for a different price point and audience.
Actually, even the r7 1700 was much cheaper even back then.
Of course, all you other points are still valid and I would add that the cost of the entire platform is higher with Intel both back then as well as today in the used market for these components.

The i7 also costed a lot more new, the i5 was still more expensive then the r5 new but it performs fairly poorly in modern titles.

    It’s a Ryzen 5 vs an i7. Should’ve compared Ryzen 7

I feel like the i7 was priced similarly to the 1700.
Zen 1 was pritty rough without some twekaing.

but nonetheless Zen architecture and AM4 platform back then are a savior among budget gamers.
