Hi there! Sorry to be posting this video late but the last week was busy! In this video I discuss the All-of-a-Kind Family books, the author Sydney Taylor, and some thoughts about children’s literature. I buddy read some of the books with Heather at Water Bear Reads. Do check out her channel to learn her thoughts on the books, too! ❤

💞So fun!!!! Can't wait to read the 4th book in the series! I am thinking I may wait until after the holidays and read it in January or February at some point. Have a lovely rest of your weekend!

I do just want to make clear that I appreciate many modern children’s books; I just feel that sometimes the social message is paraded and performed at the expense of excellent writing and meaningful stories (and, by the way, bad, “fast fashion “ infantilized illustrations). One reason why I love Heather’s channel is that she highlights the best illustration in children’s books, in a thoughtful, considered way!

I enthusiastically agree with your thoughts on the lessons we teach children in books. I find today's books to be very preachy too and they make me cringe. Hard teachings on life are taught via good literature. I remember reading two books about younger brothers...one was a bio of Anne Sullivan, Helen Keller's teacher. Her younger brother died in the almhouse when they were young and the way she described finding his little bed empty in the morning was such a lesson to me about loving siblings - even annoying kid brothers. The other one was My Brother Stevie, another touching tale about brothers, this one a troubled one. Both books are with me still and my point is, I learned something about love and loss that I would never have learned with today's books for children. Sadly, my little brother (always my little brother no matter how old we are) died during COVID and someday I will return to those books as a remembrance of the little boy I was blessed to grow up with. Books are everything to me...

@@donnamacdonald2200 I’m at a loss for words. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing such a poignant, vulnerable truth with us. I’m so very sorry to hear about your loss, and feel like everything you just shared about life and family and loss and grief and joy is everything I wanted to say but in a much more profound way. Hugs to you. And thank you for listening and for sharing. The best books are starting points for the best in each of us. ♥️

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my brother also and I had no idea how much I would miss him. I do miss his phone calls and our visits. Life for sure is hard. Right now living in SC through the throes of Hurricane Helene teaches it to me once again. Take care & be well.

Hi Celeste, another book of the NewYork
experience might be A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. About the poor and the tennaments in New York. There is another series of a family in old NY, and I can’t remember the name right now, but what a study that would make. My own family came to NY on a ship from Prussia and we have the ship manifesto but it was before Ellis Island. How interesting. They were from upstate NY. Thank you.😊

Hi Celeste! Wow what an amazing review! I love how you embellished the conversation with photos from the era...you made so many great points! I keep wanting to tell you that Mary Stevens, the illustrator of "More", also illustrated another book you mentioned on your channel, Dandelion Cottage. Another one of your recommendations I'd like to get to...this was such a positive experience for me...thank you so much!!! Wonderful discussion! Yes I love the coffee aroma in the morning!🍁🍂☕

Hi Heather! Finally got time to post this! Yes, I should mention that most of the photos (from 1895-1916) are from The New York Tenement archives or Wiki Commons. It’s funny, I had reviews all scripted out but as I started talking about the time period something just happened and I started talking about children’s literature, acceptance of others, finding moments of joy, etc. Where did that come from?! I didn’t realize that about the illustrator! Thanks for letting me know. 😊
